"Reckoning" is the seventh episode of season 2 of The Chosen.

After learning of Jesus' whereabouts, Quintus sends Gaius to arrest him. The disciples lose control as they argue about how to respond. While seeking information about where Jesus has been taken, Andrew and Philip encounter old friends.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bilingual Bonus: Jesus asks Gaius if he may say goodbye to his eema. Gaius doesn't understand, so Jesus says "mater mea" (latin for "my mother"), and Gaius allows him to say goodbye to Mother Mary.
  • Blunt "No": The Roman official tells Shmuel that he will pass along his request to question Jesus when the Romans have him in custody. Shmuel ask if he will really do so, and gets a blunt "No" in response.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Gaius plans to march through Jotapata to get to Jesus' camp on the other side. After Atticus explains what Jotapata is like, Gaius decides to take the long way around Jotapata instead.
Atticus: Now that sounds like a good plan.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Simon is angry that the others did nothing while Jesus was arrested. When told that he was detained, not arrested, he shouts, "Those are just words! Have you no experience with Rome?"
  • Drawing Straws: A variant, where Simon, Andrew, James, and John decide which two of them will fish by throwing stones into the sea. Andrew argues that Jesus told all four of them to fish, but after he and Simon lose, he goes along with the decision.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Atticus can walk in and see Quintus without an appointment.
  • Foreign Queasine: Quintus describes the Far East this way.
Quintus: They eat their fish raw. Peel off the scales, cut off the heads and tails and take a bite.
  • From Bad to Worse: Yussif warns Tamar that Shmuel is seeking her for questioning, and that he will twist her testimony. She mentions that she and Jesus both grew up in Egypt. Yussif says that that is even worse, and tells Andrew to get her out of Jotapata.
  • Jerkass: Quintus casually mocks and threatens Jesus and his race while the latter is in custody. He makes it clear how he'd love for Jesus to give him a reason to have him killed.
  • Giggling Villain: Quintus starts chuckling when Jesus responds calmly to his Implied Death Threat.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Simon tells Andrew that he doesn't need to ride to Jesus' rescue all the time. Andrew calls out Simon for the way he has done the same thing. Simon acknowledges it, saying that he knows it doesn't help.
  • Implied Death Threat: Quintus says to Jesus, "Then I cannot promise you won't stop breathing."
  • Les Collaborateurs: Atticus used to have reliable informants in Jotapata. They were tortured to death.
  • Meaningful Echo: When Simon objected to Jesus calling Matthew, Jesus told him, "Get used to different." Now Simon tells Andrew the same thing.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Andrew's motivation after seeing what is being done to John the Baptizer. He tells Simon that they can't let them do that to Jesus.
  • Non-Action Guy: Simon points out to Andrew that if Jesus was building an army, he wouldn't have started with Little James and Thaddeus.
  • Self-Restraint: When Jesus is arrested, he provides no resistance, aside from requesting to hug his eema before being taken away. This causes his disciples to start succumbing to infighting over the matter.
  • So Proud of You: Jesus' response when the disciples ask him to teach them how to pray.
Jesus: Now you're behaving like true students.
  • Underestimating Badassery: A variant. Quintus, while annoyed by Jesus' actions, doesn't actually try to stop him from continuing. As he sees it, Jesus will just be a temporary distraction for the people.
  • Will Talk for a Price: Shmuel asks a woman in Jotapata if there are any Ethiopians in the city. She holds out a cup and he drops a coin into it.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Jesus' arrest causes the Disciples to fall into discord, with tensions rising as they try to figure out how to rescue him.
