Chapter 2: Hello Terrifying Fantasy World!

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • "Fawlty Towers" Plot: Eda and King try and fail to spike Luz with Tearful Tonic various times throughout the day, thinking that they can use her tears to cure their respective ailments. Instead the tonic ends up hitting various people Luz interacts with, making her think that she is somehow upsetting people. While Luz is understandably crushed that they were trying to emotionally manipulate her, not to mention not wanting to have her bodily fluids monetized, she tells them that they should have told her the real reason why they needed her tears, seeing curing their ailments as a good enough reason.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Luz being used to magic and being more empathetic results in her having an easier time selling potions in Bonesborough, making a lot of snails for Eda.
    • Luz isn't tricked by Adegast, instead seeing through his illusions and trying to leave.
  • Like a Duck Takes to Water: Turns out Luz is a natural at potion-selling, managing to sell-out by charging a mere 3 times the minimum asking price instead of Eda's usual 10.
  • Puberty Superpower: Luz explains that "puberty" and maturation are different from each other, full-blooded going from cherubs to fully-grown before puberty even starts. Being a hybrid, she's a late-bloomer. Even with her wings grown in, she still has other stages of maturation down the line.
Luz Noceda: It's different for hybrids. "Pure" angels complete maturity before puberty even starts, but as a half-human, I started puberty first. In the eyes of angels, that makes me an adult by human standards, which means I only have to start my maturity to be considered a full angel.
