Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 3 E 17 Meet Mondo Gecko

Go To

Casey and Mikey meet Mondo Gecko, who's involved in more than he appears to be,

  • Abusive Parents: Jason/Mondo's parents apparently kicked him out after he turned into a mutant gecko.
  • A Day in the Limelight: For Mikey and Casey.
  • Appropriated Appellation: Averted, Xever considers the moniker "Fishface" an insult. Mondo similarly isn't fond of his name at first, but later accepts it.
  • Big Bad: Xever ends up being the main antagonist of the episode.
  • Borrowed Catch Phrase: Invoked at the end, but fully adopted from that point.
  • Breather Episode: Pretty much everyone except the Purple Dragons appear to be having some down time. This episode also comes in between the action heavy, dramatic "Clash of the Mutanimals" and "The Deadly Venom", both of which make an effort to advance the plot.
  • The Bus Came Back: Among the Rogues Gallery present at Xever's race, Spider Bytez notably makes his third appearance in the show (and his first in over a year). Snakeweed also appears for the first time since "Metalhead Rewired", and Pizza Face of all people shows up attending the race.
  • Calling Card: Casey describes the Face Doodling he leaves on the unconscious Purple Dragons as this.
    "4 COPS — FROM CASEY :)"
  • Calling Me a Logarithm: Fishface calls Casey "the obligatory human ally". Casey shoots back that he's not "oblidary".
  • The Cavalry: The rest of the gang show up just in time to take down Xever in the Shellraiser after he jinxes himself by asking "Is that all you got?"
  • Continuity Nod: Mondo was mutated into a humanoid gecko when the Kraang's mutagen rained from the sky waaaay back in the season two opener.
  • The Fagin: Mondo Gecko was kicked out by his parents after he became a mutant, Xever took him in and made him an errand boy. So Mondo was working for The Foot and didn't know it. In fact Xever said Mondo was his favorite errand boy, but we don't see any other mutants that Xever took off the street.
  • Fastball Special: Casey uses a variation in which he launches Mondo Gecko with his hockey stick.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Mikey delivers one to a panicking Mondo.
  • Groin Attack: One of Xever's Fish bite Mikey there, all the Villains in the audience, apart from Rahzar, react appropriately.
  • Hypocrite: Xever calls Mikey, Casey, and Mondo cheaters for working together when he flat out said "no rules" not to mention he activated the "obstacles" after he already passed the area they were in and he was using rocket powered skates. Who's the real cheater?
  • Is That the Best You Can Do?: Said nearly word for word by Xever after he No Sells Mondo's attack.
  • Meaningful Echo: "Friends don't let friends fall off of buildings." The second time, it's said by Mondo, reflecting that Mikey's good influence rubbed off on him.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The guys argue about what's the better catchphrase - cowabunga, booyakasha, or goongala.note  Cowabunga is referred to as "old-school", reflecting early complaints from fans over the use of booyakasha as the Turtles' main catch phrase in this series.
    • It's fitting that Mondo's debut episode features him starring alongside Mikey, considering Robbie Rist, Mondo's actor, was the voice of Mikey in the original trilogy.
    • Mikey claims he's only a "party dude", the phrase the 80's show's theme song used to refer to that Mikey.
  • Non-Action Guy: Mondo's not a fighter.
  • Remake Cameo: Robbie Rist voiced Michelangelo in the original film series, here he voices Mondo Gecko, the most Mikey like of their mutant allies. On a meta level this allows the 'old Mikey' to bequeath the old catch phrase 'Cowabunga' to the new Mikey who previously only said 'Booyakasha!'.
  • Share the Male Pain: For all that the audience is comprised of enemies of the Turtles, a lot of them wince when Mikey gets a Groin Attack from a piranha.
  • Token Human: Casey's status as this to the Hamato Clan is outright lampshaded by Xever.
  • Villains Out Shopping: It must be a really slow day for the Foot, considering the entirety of Shredder's inner circle (Bradford, Xever, Zeck, Steranko, Tiger Claw, and Hun) are at the race, including Stockman, who should be working on Karai's formula. The racetrack is pretty elaborate, so Xever and Stockman must've had a lot of downtime to work on it.
  • Your Mom: Casey to Mondo.
"I'm out like your mom at a beauty pageant!"
