April feels left out and insists on joining the Turtles on a mission to TCRI and a secret about April's past is revealed.
This episode provides examples of:
- Ancient Conspiracy: The Kraang have been on Earth for 1000 years.
- And Call Him "George": "April (Derp) hug turtle!"
- Ass Kicks You: April Derp butt-bumps Leo when he tries to get Mikey away from her.
- Body Horror: April Derp is a highly deformed April clone, with a normal-looking head growing out of a larger head, mismatched limbs, and extra eyes and mouths placed randomly about.
- Clones Are Expendable: Once the initial shock has passed, the Turtles have no problem dispatching the April clones. Though, to be fair, the first clone did lead the turtles into a Gas Chamber.
- Clone Degeneration: April Derp, which is said to come from the Kraang's "reject bin".
- Conspiracy Wall: Kurtzman has a corkboard full of pictures of the Turtles, mutants and the Kraang.
- Damsel in Distress: April reveals that she is aware she's a part of this trope and does not like it.
- The Elevator from Ipanema:Raphael: This music is making my ears bleed.
- Foreshadowing: Kraang Prime reports that the mutagen is nearly ready and that the Kraang will soon invade again and mutate humanity in the process.
- Gasshole: April Derp farts several times.
- Grappling-Hook Gun
- Half-Human Hybrid
- Innocently Insensitive: Mikey once again. He happily welcomes April to "the family" after they discover she's a mutant, while she is very obviously distressed by the news.
- Killing for a Tissue Sample: The Kraang attempt to do this with April.
- More Dakka: A Kraang appears in a machine that has a gatling gun attach to it.
- Never Say "Die": As they're about to extract April's DNA, the Kraang say she's going to "expire."
- No Body Left Behind: The April clones turn to black goo when killed.
- Overly-Long Tongue: April Derp has one coming from the mouth on her back.
- Pokémon Speak: Except for one line (April hug turtle!), all April Derp says is "Derp."
- The Reveal: April has psychic powers and is actually a half-Kraang mutant.
- Shout-Out: Jack Kurtzman is modeled after Carl Kolchak, the paranormal investigator from the cult TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker. Raph even refers to him as a "stalker". The name "Jack Kurtzman" was a pseudonym once used by comic book artist Jack Kirby.
- The numerous tanks filled with April clones scream Ayanami Rei.
- April Derp may remind some of Kazami Chiharu's final form in Kamen Rider: The Next.
- Spot the Impostor: The turtles wind up surrounded by a crowd of nearly-complete April clones, one of which grabs the real April. The turtles have trouble telling which April is real until she produces her war fan and starts attacking the clones; only she has the fan and the training to use it.
- What Measure Is a Non-Human?: The turtles attack April Derp unprovoked. She doesn't start attacking them until they attack her.
- Where's the Fun in That?: The Kraang admit they could just use a strand of April's hair as a DNA sample, but it's not as entertaining.
