The turtles are taking some time to relax after taking down the Foot and Kraang and have decided to try a game they found in the sewers, Mazes & Mutants. Leo takes the role of Dungeon Master, Donnie plays a wizard, Mikey engrosses himself in the role of elven thief, and Raph begrudgingly plays a dwarf barbarian.
To finish off their adventure, Leo sets up a LARP for the four of them in the sewers. They pass Leo's first encounter, but moments later are overwhelmed by a mysterious fog. When the haze clears, the turtles appear to have been transported into a real dungeon-maze. In a flash of magic mist, their Dungeon Master reveals himself as Sir Malachi, the sparrow wizard. Sir Malachi says that the turtles must find their way through his dungeon, solve his riddles, and defeat a mighty dragon, or Princess April will meet an untimely demise.
- Actor Allusion: Raphael, after being offered Mikey's "Plus One Ring of Awesome", angrily states "he doesn't do rings!"
- Call-Back: The dragon at the end of the dungeon takes the form of Leatherhead.
- Clap Your Hands If You Believe: The source of Sir Malachi's power.
- Critical Failure: Raph rolls one while fighting the dragon.
- Foreshadowing: The first major hint at the illusory nature of the maze is that the Monkey goblins look like Professor Rockwell, something the characters notice and at first would come off as Lampshade Hanging recycling assets.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Malachi's motivation for trapping the turtles.
- LARP: Leo even spells out what it stands for. Mikey and Donnie like the idea; Raph, not so much.
- RPG Episode: The episode starts out with the Turtles playin Mazes and Monsters before winding up in a life-like LARP-based adventure under the thrall of a dramatic wizard-like mutant.
- Shout-Out: To a number of fantasy series:
- Donnie says, "You shall not pass!"
- Mikey does an impression of Gollum crooning over The Ring of Power
- April is imprisoned in a bubble on top of a pile of gold coins.
- Sir Malachi's juggling of a crystal orb with a scene of the quest's goal.
- Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: Malachi's speech. Mikey's even more so.
