This episode provides examples of
- The Cavalry: Right at the beginning of the episode, Mortu and the Utroms come to the Turtles' and Professor Honeycutt's aid just in time.
- Failed a Spot Check: Both the Utroms and the Turtles miss that only two of the three Triceratons get sent back.
- Foreshadowing: One of the Triceratons slips away in the confusion and ends up in the sewers.
- Good All Along: The Utroms turn out to not be as villainous as the Turtles thought.
- Losing Your Head: Baxter Stockman managed to survive the explosion, but has been reduced to this.
- Mental Fusion: The Turtles and Master Splinter enter the Utroms' Oracle Pods and simultaneously share the collective history of the Utroms.
- Not So Above It All: During the simulation, Mikey spots some food and repeatedly tries to grab it, even though it's a hologram. Master Splinter is just as amused by this display as the other turtles are.Splinter: There is some sort of lesson here, but I'm enjoying this too much to think what it is.
- Shout-Out: Mikey says "I've seen this movie. We're not going to have anything burst out of our chests, are we?"
- Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Raph and the past version of Mortu have the same response to Ch'rell's threat: "Big talk, little slimeball."
- Time Dilation: According to Splinter, the Turtles were only gone for eight hours, even though it was three weeks from their perspective. Mortu attempts to explain with scientific terms and (unsurprisingly) only Donatello gets it.
- Wham Episode: The Utroms are revealed, and the Turtles are finally home from space and reunited with Splinter.
