Recap / Teen Titans S 4 E 8 Stranded

Go To

When being attacked by an alien in outer space, the Titans inadvertently split the T-Ship apart. Stranded and separated on several different areas of an alien planet, the Titans must now find each other again.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax: When the Shallas are pulling Raven's cloak.
    Raven: Don't! Go away!
Shallas: Don't go away! Don't go away! Don't go away! Shalla!
  • An Aesop: When Poor Communication Kills, both parties should try to meet in the middle to understand one another.
    • Cyborg eventually learns to ease up on the Techno Babble and utilize Buffy Speak so Beast Boy will understand what he's saying.
    • Robin eventually realizes he needs to explain to Starfire how he feels rather than hope she'll just forget, and Starfire in turn learns to be more understanding.
    • Played for Laughs with Raven, who eventually realizes she can utilize the Shallas' devotion to her to get pampered.
  • Analogy Backfire: Oh, Cyborg...
Cyborg: This is not rocket science...okay, so it is rocket science, but it's not that hard!
  • Buffy Speak: Beast Boy refers to the thermal coupler as a "cool round thingamajig" and a shiny donut upon finding it, and calls the configuration disk an "eyeball pizza thingy" to try to understand what Cyborg is saying. Cyborg himself is forced to refer to the thruster mechanism as the "red candy cane thingamawhosit" to get Beast Boy to get them out of a tense situation.
  • Cutaway Gag:
    Robin: You guys seen Raven?
Starfire: I hope she is not suffering the atrocities so abundant on this planet.
(cut to Raven being massaged and pampered by the Shallas)
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Some have pointed out that the scene where Raven is being 'massaged' by the aliens briefly looks like something else, as we only see her face while she's groaning.
    • They also appear to be humping her feet. Though it’s likely supposed to be a foot massage but Raven still has her shoes on.
  • *Drool* Hello: How they first find the alien thing that originally trashed the space station.
  • Finger Framing: Beast Boy as he reassembles Cyborg.
  • Foreshadowing: When Starfire and Robin reunite planetside, she spends a good several minutes walking or running to get away from him, hurdle obstacles, and shoot down enemies, despite how she spends the rest of the series in the air more than on the ground. This is an early indicator that she's so upset she can't fly.
  • Grapes of Luxury: Just part of the pampering Raven receives from the Shallas.
  • Green Around the Gills: Raven gets slightly space-sick after the T-Ship is sent hurtling from the space station's explosion.
    Robin: Is everyone okay?
    Raven: Ugh...Define "Okay"?
  • Lost in Transmission: Robin says not to separate, but it was broken up by static, making everyone think he wanted them to separate.
  • Poor Communication Kills: This is the main source of all the problems in this episode. From Robin not properly explaining to Starfire what he thinks their relationship actually is, to Beast Boy being unable to understand Cyborg when putting him and the T-ship back together, and the aliens who don't understand what Raven is saying at all.
    • Interestingly, the start of the episode was an excellent example of how effective the team is when they work together with good communication, especially Robin and Starfire; their attacks were extremely coordinated and all relied upon one another.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Robin angrily says this about Starfire — and Starfire, given their many Ship Tease moments in several previous episodes, is extremely offended. It causes a serious social rift between the two of them for most of the episode.
  • Ship Tease: Robin and Starfire have a moment, which led to a lot of problems...but also some cute moments ensue when they finally do work it out.
  • Shout-Out: During the montage of Beast Boy trying to repair Cyborg, one of the forms that Cyborg takes resembles Giant Robo, with Beast Boy dressed up as Daisaku Kusama.
  • Stepping Stones in the Sky: Robin uses this method to grab Starfire when they fell off a collapsing cliff (courtesy of the alien monster) and Starfire momentarily lose her ability to fly.
  • Sticky Situation: Robin gets attacked by a gunk-oozing alien creature the moment he jettisons from the ship, where said creature's sticky ooze gives Robin a hard time. Notably, his attempts at throwing one of his weaponized discs had his weapon sticking to his hand.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: That alien with the sonic voice just won't quit.
  • Symbolic Distance: Robin and Starfire have a falling out after Robin says Starfire isn't his girlfriend to a teasing Cyborg. While navigating through the planet the two are stranded on, they go through a cloudy mountain pass that ends with the two on different ends, highlighting the distance between them.
  • Techno Babble: Cyborg gets some at the beginning while fixing the space station. Later this causes problems when Beast Boy has to put him back together again.
  • This Ain't Rocket Surgery:
Cyborg: This is not rocket science... okay, so it is rocket science, but it's not that hard!
