Recap / Teen Titans S 4 E 11 The End Part One

Go To

Robin: "...Why didn't you tell us...? It's happening, isn't it?"
Starfire: "Please, Raven, today is the day? It is-"
Raven: "-The end of the world."

The one where all hell breaks loose. Literally.

Raven discovers that this is the day she has feared her whole life – the day she will end the world. She attempts to make the Titans' final day perfect. She makes them breakfast, they fight Plasmus, and she takes them on a walk. But when Slade comes to reclaim her, the Titans refuse to give her up without a fight.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Slade brings Raven to Trigon, only for him to tell him You Have Outlived Your Usefulness by refusing to hold up his end of the bargain, proving Raven's earlier point about how Slade will no longer be needed when his purpose has been served.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Raven, of course.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Cyborg merges with the Titans Tower and uses all of its power in one giant sonic cannon blast that effortlessly destroys all of Slade's demons. It also leaves him and the Tower completely drained afterward, and Slade is able to summon a fresh batch of demons to replace the lost ones. There's also the obvious fact that this attack doesn't really have any practical applications outside of this one specific battle, since the Titans can't exactly go dragging their house around with them.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Before she goes off with Slade, Raven tells her friends to "be safe". When saying this, she grants them a small portion of her power, which is what keeps them from turning to stone when Trigon appears.
  • Continuity Nod: Trigon's more humanoid design from "Nevermore" appears in silhouette form when Trigon speaks to Raven within her mind.
  • Darkest Hour: Raven fulfills her destiny of becoming Trigon's portal to Earth. As she is consumed by the energy field that creates the portal, she drops the lucky penny that Beast Boy had given her earlier. Trigon emerges proclaiming "The Earth is MINE!" To Be Continued.
  • Did I Say That Out Loud: Cyborg, after seeing Raven respond badly to his saying she doesn't know how to cook, says this word for word.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Raven is relieved to find that the threat du jour is just Plasmus.
  • Earth Is the Center of the Universe: Trigon sired Raven specifically to conquer this Insignificant Little Blue Planet.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: The ending of the episode begins this.
  • God of Evil: Raven refers to her father Trigon as "the incarnation of evil, the source of all darkness".
  • Inner Monologue Conversation: Raven has a serious one with Trigon.
You aren't here, you can't be!
I am always with you, you are part of me. Forever.
  • Lancer vs. Dragon: Sort of; in the previous seasons the focus is mostly on Robin and Slade, but now they're in the second fiddle position to Raven and Trigon. For the climax, Robin and Slade duel each other as usual while the other three Titans take on the fire-demons.
  • Last Day to Live: Raven tries to make the most of her last day with her friends, first by concealing all her red-glowing tattoos signaling the apocalypse has arrived, then by fixing them breakfast (despite being a Lethal Chef who burnt perfectly good food) and lastly by treating them to pizza. Robin starts suspecting why Raven is acting reclusive (or more so than usual), only for him to realize today is the day she warned them about.
  • Lethal Chef: Raven. Although Starfire seems quite fond of her cooking. Then again, Starfire drinks mustard and makes a dish known as the Pudding of Sadness.
  • Little "No": See Marked Change below, but when she sees them, she says a tiny no.
  • Marked Change: Raven wakes up covered with glowing markings that portend The End of the World as We Know It.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode has a bit of this. It starts off with Raven awakening to discover the demonic marks on her body, then goes to slightly lighthearted comedy about her trying to make the day perfect and trying to be painfully nice to all of them, then goes to the Titans fighting to save their friend and stop the Apocalypse.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Cyborg merges with the Titans Tower (sucking out all of the power) and uses a pair of sonic cannons to obliterate Slade and his army of demons... only for Slade to survive and summon a whole new army of demons ten seconds later.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: During the battle outside the Titans Tower, Starfire performs a Spirit Bomb-like attack on a group of demons. As mentioned above, Cyborg demonstrates the ability to merge with the Titans Tower, transforming his arms into a pair of large sonic cannons.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Raven starts out the day by cooking her friends breakfast, agreeing to let Starfire paint her nails, not calling Beast Boy names, and other painfully nice acts. Turns out, this is because it's the day the Apocalypse is supposed to start and Raven wants to make her friends' last day on Earth perfect.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Played straight - The Titans had accumulated a significant number of allies by this point, and Trigon's arrival is a global-scale threat which they were already aware of several weeks beforehand. And yet somehow it never occurs to them to inform the Titans East, Thunder and Lightning, the honorary Titans from Winner Takes All, or other forms of help to combat Trigon's forces. (The show even makes it clear that Batman does exist in this universe - what about the Justice League?)
  • You Just Had to Say It: You and your big mouth, Beast Boy!
    Slade: Give me the girl.
    Robin: No way.
Slade: You don't really have a choice in the matter. I'm taking her.
Beast Boy: Oh yeah? You and What Army??
An endless expanse of Trigon's demonic monsters appear.
    Beast Boy: <high pitched shriek>
Cyborg: You just had to ask, didn't ya'?
  • You Can't Fight Fate / Screw Destiny: The episode has differing views on the subject of the prophecy, Raven at first believes the former, but hints that she hopes for the latter. The Titans believe in the latter and do their hardest to make sure that happens, while Trigon and Slade keep invoking the former. It seems to have broken Raven but she gave the Titans a fighting chance in hopes that she is wrong.
  • You Fool!: Raven calls Slade a fool for expecting Trigon to keep his part of the bargain. Some nerve of Trigon promising something he won't deliver.
Raven: You're a fool. Whatever he promised, he won't deliver.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Slade gets this from Trigon, just as Raven predicted. Trigon justifies his betrayal by pointing out that the deal for Slade to bring Raven was rendered meaningless when Raven chose to come of her own will.
Slade: The portal approaches. The hour is near. It's time for my payment.
Trigon: Payment? For what? The gem returns of her own free will. You did not deliver her. I did.
Slade: We had a deal. I held up my part of the bargain.
(Trigon laughs evilly, as Slade throws fireballs at him, furious by this act of betrayal)
Trigon: I granted you these powers and I can take them away!
  • You Shall Not Pass!: The battle of Titans Tower takes place to make sure Slade and his minions don't reach Raven. Cyborg's turn to hold them off even comes with his own Badass Boast:
Cyborg: "NO ONE'S GETTIN' IN HERE!"

"The Earth is MINE!"

In spite of the other Titans attempts to stop it, Raven fulfills the prophecy that she would be the portal that would bring Trigon to Earth. As the demonic being crosses over, he makes a terrifying declaration of victory.

How well does it match the trope?
