Cool Fu Fu

  • An Aesop: True friends don't make you do things you know are wrong. And if you are hanging with the wrong crowd, don't let yourself be swept up by such people.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Fufu has thus far gone along with the "cool" bats' machinations without question, even the ones he regrets. But when it comes down to taking plums from the Magistrate's new plum tree, Fufu is shocked that they would have him resort to stealing.
  • Peer Pressure Makes You Evil: Fufu starts hanging out with the "cool" bats in hopes that their coolness will rub off on him. What he doesn't know is that these bats are more like thugs and bullies. They give him a new make-over with edgier glasses, encourage him to attack the market along with them, and laugh at Fufu's feline friends.
  • Sweet and Sour Grapes: Fufu decided not to steal the plums like he was ordered to, and Sagwa later rewards his integrity by gifting him one of the plums given out to eat. Ironically, although it makes the "cool" bats think he stole the plum after all and welcome him into their club, Fufu turns down the offer.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The main plot is about Fufu and his problem with peer pressure. In the meantime, the b-plot is about Cook and Reader getting competitive over watching over the Foolish Magistrate's new plum tree.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Cook and Reader were fast asleep on the night they were to keep vigil on the Magistrate's plum tree. Fufu had every opportunity to take one of the plums he was tasked to steal, unaware Sagwa was watching him. But to Sagwa's relief, his conscience won out and convinced him not to take the plums.
