Recap / Phineas And Ferb Great Balls Of Water

Go To

Phineas and Ferb create a giant ball of water which rolls through town, while Candace tries to think of something wild to do with Jeremy when she worries their usual trips to the mall are boring. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz invents a Double-Negative-inator to confuse his local eatery into giving him a drink that is not served in the summer.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: Before Linda leaves, she tells Candace, "I tell you I'm going out, later you'll tell me Phineas and Ferb are up to something, but there's nothing there to see, so we all have pie. Just another ordinary day." Later on upon witnessing the water ball, she does just that.
  • The Bus Came Back: Buford's goldfish, Biff, is seen for the first time since "Voyage to the Bottom of Buford".
  • The Cameo: Vanessa has a voice-only cameo at the very end.
  • Call-Back: Phineas and the gang's surfboards share the same designs as the mini ones seen in "What'd I Miss?".
  • Complexity Addiction: Lampshaded by Doof.
Doofenshmirtz: Once I recovered from the shock, I did what I always do, solve a simple problem with a complicated and menacing machine.
  • Confusing Multiple Negatives: The purpose of the Double-Negative-inator.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Creator Cameo: Director Diphthong is voiced by writer John Mathot.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Rodney named his pet piranha "Fluffy".
  • Genre Savvy: By this point in the series, Linda becomes painfully aware of the formula: She tells Candace that she is heading out, then Candace tries to bust Phineas and Ferb, but once the Big Idea disappears, they have some pie.
    Linda: Just another ordinary day.
Candace: Ordinary?! Would I ordinarily do this?! (Starts causing some chaos in her bedroom.) Tra la la la la la la la la la la la la la! Tra la la la la la la la la!!!
Linda: Like I said. Just another ordinary day.
  • Ghost in the Machine: Candace has an inner conversation with herself when she worries Jeremy might think she's getting predictable.
  • I'm Okay!:
    • During Candace's song "Extraordinary", the lines about "Underwater taxidermy, shopping for a suitcase" features an alligator hand-bag made from an actual alligator, who holds up a sign that reads "I'M OKAY".
    • After a guy living on Loop-De-Loop St. falls out of his house, he shouts "I'm okay!"
      "At least it's rent controlled!"
  • Instant Wristwatch: Subverted, in that Buford is actually seen wearing a watch from the very beginning of the episode and it beeps to inform him to take care of Biff.
  • Jury Duty: Major Monogram is unable to give Agent P his mission due to this, so instead, his mission is given to him by Director Diphthong from accounting.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Director Diphthong tells Agent P that Doof has been buying a large amount of negative ion generators and negative power cables, then says, "And I'm positive that that can't be good." Naturally, Agent P rolls his eyes at this poor wordplay.
  • List Song: "Extraordinary" lists off several of the fun suggestions Candace can try during her date with Jeremy.
  • Mondegreen Gag: Buford confuses "surface tension" with "surfer tension".
  • Mundane Made Awesome: A lot of the ideas in the "Extraordinary" montage are average or run-of-the-mill, such as knitting, cooking, yoga, hula, jogging, dying one's hair, and standing in a wheat field.
  • Neat Freak: Apparently, Doof has to clean up all the debris after his encounters with his nemesis after he leaves.
Doofenshmirtz: Aw, man, once again, the place is trashed. You just take off leaving me here to clean it all up. Does it ever occur to you, Perry the Platypus, how much of a mess is left after one of our little tête-à-têtes? I betcha it never even occurred to you that I keep talking to you for a while after you're gone. I mean, it's probably a sad commentary on my life that I'm wearing an apron and talking to a platypus that's no longer... How long have you been standing there, Vanessa?
    Vanessa: Long enough, Dad.
  • Painful Rhyme: The "Extraordinary" song somehow finds a rhyme for "orange", but the "rhyme" is "door and...".
  • Saying Too Much: Candace tells Jeremy it is so hot that even her "dollies" are sweating. But she then tells him she doesn't play with her dolls she just happens to have a few on her wall next to her unicorn. Then she facepalms when she realizes what she just said.
  • Snipe Hunt: Candace is briefly shown on an actual snipe hunt during her "Extraordinary" montage.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Major Monogram tells Agent P that he's stuck in jury duty, the judge bangs his gavel and Monogram says, "No, Your Honor, I'm not speaking on a mobile device. I'm... talking to a wart on my hand."
  • Totally Radical: Even Norm knows that no one says "What what" anymore.
Doofenshmirtz: How do you stay so current?
  • Tutti Frutti Hat: Candace wears one while trying to be extraordinary.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Biff is given a radical redesign since his last appearance. He is now yellow with orange fins and his eyes, once just black dots, are now bigger with pupils.
