Recap / Phineas And Ferb A Hard Days Knight

Go To

The Flynn-Fletcher family are in England to visit Lawrence's parents, Reginald and Winifred. While there, Phineas and Ferb decide to hold a medieval tournament after hearing a story about the Black Knight.

Meanwhile Agent P is sent to infiltrate EvilCon to spy on Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

This episode marks the introduction of Lawrence's parents.

Tropes

  • Awesome, but Impractical: A dragon robot that breathes fire! From its mouth...where the cockpit is...
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • To get into the convention, the disguised Perry shows his phony ID to an attendee. As we see how different Perry and the actual photo look, the guy mutters "Hey, wait a second" in suspicious tone... as he forgot to give him a convention button.
    • Doofensmirtz approaches the disguised Perry and says he recognizes him, as dramatic music swells. Doof then mistakes him for his personal hero, Dr. Wexler.
    • Doof and Perry's robot battle passes in front of Linda and Lawrence's car, and we hear Lawrence exclaiming in surprise... cut to him reading the newspaper about a new version of Jane Eyre.
  • Brick Joke: A newsreader reports on the robot fight, and then just matter-of-factly reports on a new adaptation of Jane Eyre. Later, both Lawrence and Ferb comment on this news.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This episode is the first to establish that Doofensmirtz can’t recognize Perry if he isn’t wearing his fedora (and only the fedora). When Perry is forced to reveal himself, he comments on him being a platypus- but doesn’t recognize him as Perry until he puts his fedora on.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Monogram had the real Dr. Wexler captured before sending Perry in undercover so as to avoid any complications, but then it turns out that Doofensmirtz is a Wexler fanboy.
  • Downer Ending: In-universe, the Black Knight's quest to slay the dragon ended poorly.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Candace falls for a wealthy English boy named Charles, who heavily resembles Jeremy. In later episodes, Candace would never think of looking at anyone but Jeremy that way.
    • Also, Agent P shows genuine fear of being seen through his disguise. In later episodes, he would use not being recognized without his hat to his advantage.
  • Eiffel Tower Effect: Parodied. In the opening, there is a montage of iconic British landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Stonehenge, and the White Cliffs of Dover. It's then revealed that they're all within a short distance of each other.
Phineas: Either I've grown a lot in the last year, or England's gotten smaller.
  • Embarrassing but Empowering Outfit: A variant; Dr. Doofensmirtz thinks a giant robot version of Queen Elizabeth I is too "girly" and swaps it out for a dragon. Unfortunately for him, the robot Elizabeth proves to be pretty powerful, especially in the paws of Perry the Platypus.
Doofenshmirtz: That Queen Elizabeth is a tough old bird!
  • Eye Beams: One of the weapons of the Queen Elizabeth I robot.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: The Black Knight and his Hounds of Heck.
  • Hey, Wait!: Doofenshmirtz confronts an undercover Perry... because he just so happens to be impersonating Doof’s personal hero.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Phineas, dressed as a court jester, criticizes a pig for "barely suckling", then says, "What do I look like? A fool?"
  • Identical Stranger: Candace falls in love with a British boy named Sir Charles Pipping IV, who looks somewhat similar to Jeremy. In some of the foreign dubs, he shares the same voice actor as Jeremy.
  • Inventional Wisdom: The fire for the robotic dragon's Breath Weapon comes out through the cockpit, for some reason. Not to mention a conveniently located and easily pressed self-destruct button.
  • Letting the Air out of the Band: When it's revealed that the Black Knight's attempt to defeat the dragon was a failed one.
  • The Metric System Is Here to Stay: Perry's entrance to his lair is a tight squeeze. Major Monogram explains it is because England is still on the metric system.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Perry's robotic Elizabeth I delivers one of these, sprouting extra arms for good measure.
  • Repetitive Audio Glitch: Perry is found out when he tries to read from Dr. Wexler's book using an audio book, only for the CD player to start skipping.
Dr. Doofensmirtz: Hmm, that's funny. I don't remember you saying "spec" so many times.
  • Running Gag: The fact there’s a new version of Jane Eyre in the offing.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is a pun on the A Hard Day's Night film and its accompanying soundtrack album by The Beatles.
  • Silent Snarker: Perry when it once again takes putting on his hat for Doofensmirtz to recognize him.
  • Special Guest: Tim Curry plays Sir Charles' butler Stubbings and the recording of Dr. Wexler that Perry lip-syncs to.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Perry's ID for going undercover at EvilCon reads "Note: Not a platypus."
  • Tempting Fate:
    • Candace wonders briefly if getting to play a princess at Phineas and Ferb's jousting tournament might backfire. She dismisses her concerns, but they prove to be justified when she still ends up being the Butt-Monkey.
    • After getting hit with the Eye Beams, Doof boasts that his robot breathes fire, while he is sitting in the dragon's mouth. It works out like you'd expect.
Doofenshmirtz: That was a stupid design.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Phineas and Ferb put on armor this way, with Phineas on top and Ferb on the bottom. However, at one point, they somehow end up in the hands of the armor.
  • Vacation Episode: The Flynn-Fletchers take a holiday to London to visit their British paternal grandparents.
  • Visual Pun: When Charles is playing tennis with his butler, it's the butler's turn to serve. He then pulls out a serving tray and literally serves it to Charles like a piece of food. The butler even lampshades the fact that he's made a pun.
  • You Say Tomato: The background singers during “Ballad of the Black Knight” quibble about the pronunciation of “Worcestershire”.
