Recap / Peacemaker 2022 Episode 2 Best Friends For Never

Go To

Written and Directed by James Gunn.

After having a fight with a metahuman woman and blasting her to bits, Peacemaker calls Harcourt, who instructs him to get out and wakes up Adebayo to tell her that a Butterfly has attacked and been killed.

While they're driving to the scene, Harcourt warns Adebayo about the dangers of living with her wife while she's a member of this task force. As Peacemaker gathers his stuff from his date's apartment (while also taking some of her things for himself, including an unknown glowing device), the police converge on the complex and begin their investigation, overseen by detectives Sophie Song and Larry Fitzgibbon. The cops happen to notice Peacemaker as he's trying to sneak out, and raid the building, forcing Peacemaker to flee into another person's apartment where he ties up the residents and causes a domestic dispute.

Peacemaker tries to escape by jumping down several balconies and injures himself in the process, forcing Harcourt to go in and tranquilize a group of cops who spot him. The two get back to the car along with Eagly and get away.

In the morning Economos manages to fake the evidence that the police has gathered and pins it on Peacemaker's father, Auggie, who gets questioned and becomes confrontational with Song on the account of her race, but still sends the cops after his son.

After the team discusses how Annie Sturphausen, the woman who attacked Peacemaker, learned about the operation, Murn and Harcourt point fingers at Waller, and her daughter Adebayo defends her, then they accuse each other, before Peacemaker remembers that Annie had been reading the dossier he took with him. Murn gets informed that the couple that Peacemaker has taken hostage are going to be witnesses, so he sends Adebayo to buy their silence.

After coming back home, Peacemaker breaks down in tears and laments that he's pushing people away from himself while a mysterious costumed person visits the trailer, startling Smith and getting into an argument about Louis C.K.. The stranger shows enthusiasm at Peacemaker returning and is eager to learn from him.

Adebayo visits the couple that Peacemaker has taken hostage, Evan and Amber, and offers them money for silence. Meanwhile, Peacemaker and the costumed stranger start talking about ideals and reasons to fight, with the stranger revealing himself to be a sadistic superhero. They go out to shoot stuff in the forest, reveling in wanton destruction.

Evan and Amber during the interrogation accuse Auggie of taking them hostage, and the police come back to his house, arresting him for murder. He gets a hero's welcome in the pen by white supremacists and is addressed by his former nom de guerre, the White Dragon. Adebayo hints to Keeya that she and the dogs will need to leave, while Peacemaker and his masked friend are revealed to have had sex with Amber, and Peacemaker accidentally activates the device from Annie's apartment, transforming it into a miniature jet.

Tropes:

  • Answer Cut: How it's revealed Economos chose to frame Peacemaker's dad.
Murn: You change the car registration into someone else's name?
Economos: Not only that, I changed the fingerprints out to the same person, which they'll discover when they get the lab results back in a couple days.
    Murn: That's possible?
Economos: Yeah, for this guy with two thumbs, it is.
Murn: That's not how that works, but... good, great. Who'd you change it to?
Economos: Oh, Mr. Murn, you're gonna love this.
[Cut to Song and Fitzgibbon knocking on the door of...]
    Sophie Song: August Ransom Smith?
  • Beneath the Mask: It's revealed Peacemaker is completely aware of his many failings and how everyone hates him, feeling that he deserves it for pushing everyone away and killing Rick Flag, something he still feels intense guilt for.
  • Blatant Lies: When Vigilante catches him crying in bed, Peacemaker claims he's doing exercises to make his face more muscular, not crying. And Vigilante buys it.
  • Comically Missing the Point: The entire conversation between Vigilante and Peacemaker when he first shows up at Peacemaker's place.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Out of all the people that Economos could've chosen to frame for Peacemaker's actions at the apartment, he chose to frame Auggie Smith (Peacemaker's father who gave him his new equipment) of all people which can still lead back to him. Murn even calls him out for this stupid decision.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played for Laughs twice.
  • Frame-Up: Thanks to Economos’ efforts, Auggie ends up taking the wrap for his son’s actions.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Peacemaker sobs loudly in his bed over killing Rick Flag. Then Vigilante knocks on his window.
  • Instant Sedation: Harcourt knocks out Captain Miele and a few other cops with darts that drop them instantly.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Murn gets mad at Peacemaker for leaving his dossier out for Annie Sturphausen to read which led to him being attacked, Peacemaker rightfully points out they still haven't told him what a "Butterfly" is and had they did he would've been better prepared to handle Annie.
  • Lame Comeback: After Auggie tells the detectives to get off his property and calls Detective Song "Chopsticks", Song calls him "Fork" before he shuts his door. Fitzgibbon questions her choice of word and suggests "Spoon" would've been a better insult by comparison.
  • Lingerie Scene: Harcourt gets woken up by Peacemaker's call to her. She gets up, and she's wearing a Black Bra and Panties which shows her beautiful figure off.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a pun on "Best Friends Forever".
  • The Reveal: Auggie was apparently once a white supremacist figure called The White Dragon.
  • Skewed Priorities: Chris goes back to the apartment of the woman that almost killed him to grab his costume and the dossier he stupidly brought with him. But once he gets his costume and dossier, instead of leaving he raids her apartment to take her collection of 80s vinyl records and CD's and other stuff, including her panties. But if he hadn't done that, he would have never discovered the Butterfly's spaceship.
  • Take That!: Louis C.K.'s sexual misconduct allegations are brought up at length when Vigilante interrupts Peacemaker's sobbing session.
  • Three-Way Sex: After shooting up some appliances, Peacemaker is later smoking weed in bed naked and passes the weed to Amber, revealing they just had sex. And in a twist, she passes the weed to someone next to her and it's revealed to be Vigilante, with his mask still on, revealing they had a three-way.
  • Varying Competency Alibi: When the team is trying to figure out how Annie Sturphausen, the woman who attacked Peacemaker, learned about their secret operation, Peacemaker accuses Economos of tipping her off. Harcourt defends Economos by saying he couldn't have done it, which Economos is grateful to her for, but she continues and states "he's too big of a pussy to betray us", which dejects him.
