"40 OZ. of Furlough" is the ninth episode of Season 2 of Orange Is the New Black. Piper leaves the prison for 48 hours, to attend her grandmother's funeral. Soso is forced to shower, and stages a hunger strike. Flashbacks concern Red, recently arrived at Litchfield, beginning her smuggling business through the kitchen using advice from Vee (there during her previous stay).
This episode provides examples of the following tropes:
- Apology Gift: Red throws a dinner party for her "family," in the greenhouse.
- Blatant Lies: Larry tells Piper he doesn't want their relationship to be over. Piper tells him otherwise.
- Country Matters: Healy lashes out at his therapist, calling her a "cunt". This causes her to write him up.
- Department of Redundancy Department: Pennsatucky describes Brook's hunger strike as "... just super stupid. And dumb. And mean and cruel and stupid." She knows she said "stupid" twice, but it was only to emphasize how stupid she thinks the idea is.
- Driven to Suicide: Vee tries to invoke this in Rosa so that she could take her own life. It doesn't work.Vee: So, what's your escape then? Is it pain pills, booze? Everybody needs a little help with reality every now and then.
- Fan Disservice: Larry and Piper attempting to have sex in the bathroom while drunk. At her grandmother's funeral. It's awkward, clumsy, Larry cannot get it up and then he reveals he slept with Polly while Piper is fellating him.
- Daya giving Bennett a handjob when he refuses to relax.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Leanne tells Pennsatucky that "no one likes you", leading Pennsatucky to lash out by busting her nose on a wall.
- Groin Attack: One of the "Golden Girls" reveals to Flaca that she cut her husband's dick off with a knife and the knife wasn't even sharp.
- He's Back!: Pornstache's return evokes the image of a hero returning to the battlefield, effortlessly dispatching evil mooks — except he just walks into the prison hall, handing out demerits for minor offenses.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: A non-romantic example. When Pornstache comes across Soso not eating, he confronts her. When she stands up, her eyes are somewhere around his navel.
- I Have No Son!: Piper's father refuses to visit ehr in prison because she's "not the same person". Piper calls him out on it.
- Improvised Weapon: Golden Girls and their knitting needles (see Never Mess with Granny below).
- Internal Reveal: Red mocks Bennett with the knowledge of Daya carrying his unborn child as payback for giving her a shot for not listening to him.
- Larry revealing to Piper that he slept with someone else.
- Kick the Dog: Pornstache gives shots to some of the female inmates for minor inconsistencies; makeup, one's Butter Face, another eating potato chips, he also accuses an inmate for assault despite the fact fact that she just barely touched him on accident.Pornstache: Mendez is back, bitches!
- Vee insults Rosa about her cander and then tries to get her to reads a book about two teens in love dying from cancer: "The Fault In Our Stars".
- Never Mess with Granny: The "Golden Girls" threaten the kitchen staff, to obtain supplies for Red's dinner. "Wanna know what I did?" And it is terrifying.
- Oh, Crap!: Red and Nicky when they see Pornstache has returned.
- Shout-Out:
- To Lilo & Stitch. In Pennsatucky's eyes, Soso is Lilo, and Luanne is Stitch. Luanne is not pleased with the comparison.
- One of the guards listens to "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga to memorize prison rules.
- Soso compares Pornstache to Burt Reynolds but "rapey".
- Vee reads The Fault in Our Stars in class.
- Pennsatucky's friend Leanne calls Soso "Mulan".
- Sweet Tooth: Nicky does a favor for Red in favor of two boxes of Little Debbie's oatmeal pies.
- Take That!: At The Fault in Our Stars.Rosa: I've got enough depressing shit in my life, I don't need it in my books too.
