Recap / My Hero Academia S2E19 "Everyone's Internships"

Go To

As Izuku, Tenya, and Todoroki recover from their fight with Stain, the other members of Class 1-A work hard at their own internships. Thankfully, none of them have to fight any superpowered serial killers. Most of their internships are in fact quite boring. Best Jeanist tries to teach Bakugo how to be presentable as a hero, which is something "King Explosion Murder" quite needs, but Bakugo's character development isn't far enough along for him to realize it. Kirishima and Tetsutetsu intern under Fourth Kind, a four-armed hero who teaches them the value of Hero Does Public Service. Uraraka tries to broaden her horizons by learning martial arts from the hero Gunhead, who's quite a softy for someone with a gun quirk and the epithet 'battle hero'. Jiro gets to help save hostages with Death Arms. Yaoyoruzu and Kendo end up doing very little while Uwabami is preoccupied with her day job as a model, and Mt. Lady makes Mineta do her chores.

And then, there's Tsuyu. Tsuyu interned with Selkie, a hero with a seal quirk who specializes in sea rescues. Most of her work is normal chores on Selkie's ship, the Oki Mariner, and she and Selkie's sidekick Sirius bond over shared disappointment that life on a hero ship is usually as mundane as life on a regular ship. However, the mundanity is not to last as the Oki Mariner is called in to apprehend smugglers. Tsuyu helps Selkie and Sirius capture the group and turn them into the coast guard.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The internships of everyone except Deku, Iida, and Todoroki were left as cameos or references in the manga, while this episode is devoted to the internships of other members of Class 1-A (plus Tetsutetsu and Kendo), making the entire episode a case of this.
  • An Aesop: Froppy learned that you should only fight when all other options are exhausted. Since Selkie is close by and Sirius is in danger, it's better to put your trust in more experienced individuals.
    • While never explained, it is implied that she also learned that hero work isn't always fun or exciting, but protecting the citizens and your partners, as well as preventing threats, is more important. Sirius had Froppy figure this out herself.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Downplayed with Gunhead. His power is very lethal, but he's very nice and thus rarely uses it against people; usually he just fires warning shots and uses his martial arts for non-lethal takedowns.
  • Breather Episode: A well-deserved one after the intensity of the multi-episode Nomu attack and battle with Stain.
  • Brick Joke: During Kirishima and Tetsutetsu's match during the final round of the Sports Festival, the viewers made a remark how it would be great to have them both as sidekicks. Sure enough, here they become sidekicks of the same hero for their internships.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episodes focuses mostly on Tsuyu Asui and her experience interning with Selkie, while also briefly checking in with the other 1A students' internships. Izuku, Iida, and Todoroki only appear in the cold open.
  • Filler: Technically the entire episode is this. Although events may have been referenced in the manga as having happened off-screen, none of the material actually comes from the manga.
  • Take the Third Option: Froppy faces the Sadistic Choice of either fighting the octopus villain herself or being forced to misdirect her mentor Selkie, either to save herself and/or her partner. She instead announces her position while distracting the villain long enough for the pro to arrive.
