Following the Louvre heist, Assane hands the queen's necklace over to Benjamin for inspection. To his shock, the next day Benjamin reveals that the diamonds are unmarked, indicating that they had never been tampered with in the first place. Immediately beginning to doubt that his father stole the necklace, Assane sets up a meeting with Juliette Pellegrini at Luxembourg Gardens, attempting to coax the truth out of her; Juliette, however, can do little more than confirm her genuine belief that Babakar was responsible for stealing the necklace.

Shortly afterward, Assane notices a pair of spelling mistakes in the confession letter that his father had written to him following his incarceration. As Babakar had been a massive stickler for proper spelling, Assane correctly deduces that this was a deliberate Out-of-Character Alert pointing him in the direction of an inmate named Étienne Comet. Assane infiltrates the prison where his father had been held and, after a number of trials and tribulations, finds an Arsène Lupin book amongst Comet's belongings. The book contains a coded message in which Babakar appears to blame Anne Pellegrini for framing him. Assane breaks out of prison by faking a suicide and accosts Anne, who admits that she had urged Babakar to sign a false confession at the instruction of one Inspector Gabriel Dumont, the man who had brought Assane to social services in 1995 after Babakar died.

Tropes that appear in this episode:

  • Agent Scully: To Assane's disappointment, Benjamin's immediate reaction to finding out about the spelling errors in Babakar's confession is to downplay their significance. However, Assane turns out to be completely right.
  • Alleged Lookalikes: Lampshaded heavily with Assane and Djibril Traoré, the man whose place he takes in prison; both are of west African origin but don't look alike in any way, and both are aware of this. Even so, none of the prison officials seem to notice the switch.
  • Anonymous Benefactor: When Assane confronts her, Anne Pellegrini admits that she was the one who put him through school after Babakar died.
  • The Big Board: Guédira makes one to formulate his theory on the connections between the Arsène Lupin stories and the Louvre heist.
  • Brand X: "Deli + Eat" stands in for Uber Eats.
  • Bodybag Trick: Employed by Assane to get out of prison after faking his suicide.
  • Clue of Few Words: The last letter Babakar wrote for Assane has exactly two misspelled words: "libraries" and "commit." Assane correctly interprets this as a direction to a man named Étienne Cometnote , who pulled the library book where Babakar concealed a more extensive secret message.
  • Converted Fanboy: After Assane gives Raoul an Arsène Lupin book as a gift, it's not long before Raoul starts devouring them as voraciously as his father did.
  • Flatline Plotline: To get himself out of jail, Assane pushes himself near death by overdosing on sleeping pills.
  • Get into Jail Free: Assane switches places in jail with an inmate in order to get closer to the man who shared his cell with Babakar, not needing to cause trouble to get in.
  • Hospital Hottie: The nurse at the prison's infirmary is quite attractive (without any sort of fanservice). She wonders if Assane keeps coming back to the infirmary just because he has a crush on her (he's actually just trying to get closer to the dying Étienne Comet).
  • Identical Stranger: Attempting to trick the police while he's escaping from Luxembourg Gardens after his meeting with Juliette, Assane dresses in a Deli + Eat deliveryman uniform and calls in a number of other deliveries to the location. Much to their frustration, the police are unable to distinguish between Assane and the other deliverymen due to their identical outfits, and the masks that cover their faces.
  • Last Request: When Assane meets him, Comet is very ill and clearly near death. Before they part ways, he asks Assane to "make his wife smile." To fulfill his request, Assane slips into her house and leaves her one of the diamonds from the queen's necklace.
  • Mistaken for Suicidal: Assane deliberately induces this with the prison nurse. Her belief that he is on the verge of doing himself in leads to her letting her guard down around him (and is what ultimately leads to her locating his seemingly lifeless body hanging from a noose in the prison bathroom).
  • Prison Episode: The second two thirds of the episode take place in the prison where Babakar served his sentence prior to his death.
  • Rich Bitch: While being questioned by Captain Laugier following her chat with Assane, Juliette pulls the You Have No Idea Who You're Dealing With card and threatens to get him fired.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Lieutenant Sofia Belkacem, who winds up being a major character throughout the series, makes her first appearance here.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: When in prison, Assane goads another inmate into stabbing him with a shiv, so he can get to the infirmary and talk to the inmate who shared his father's cell.
