Season 2, Episode 16:

The Whole Truth

Written by Elizabeth Sarnoff and Christina M. Kim.
Directed by Karen Gaviola.

"Of course, if I was one of them — these people that you seem to think are your enemies — what would I do? Well, there'd be no balloon, so I'd draw a map to a real secluded place like a cave or some underbrush — good place for a trap — an ambush. And when your friends got there a bunch of my people would be waiting for them. Then they'd use them to trade for me. I guess it's a good thing I'm not one of them, huh? You guys got any milk?"
Henry Gale

In flashbacks, Jin and Sun are trying to have a baby, but are unable to conceive, causing friction between them, especially when a doctor confirms that Sun is the infertile one. Sun learns English from Jae Lee, who asks her to stay in Korea with him. The doctor tells Sun that it is really Jin who is infertile, and that he lied out of fear of him.

On the Island, Jin and Sun argue over her continuing to tend her garden after being attacked. Sun starts to feel sick, and realizes she may be pregnant, which she confirms after taking a test from Sawyer. At Jack and Kate's urging, she tells Jin. Although she tells him the truth about his being infertile, he accepts that her pregnancy is a miracle and that he is the father.

Locke asks Ana Lucia to interrogate Henry, who agrees to draw her a map to his balloon. Sayid, Ana Lucia and Charlie head off into the jungle to look for it, without telling Locke and Jack. Locke and Jack let Henry out to eat with them, and he talks hypothetically about the trap he would have set for their friends if he really was an Other.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Jin's Jerkass behaviour in destroying Sun's garden at the start of the episode is motivated by his fear of her continuing to work there after having apparently been attacked by the Others in "The Long Con".
  • Book Ends: At the start of the episode, Jin destroys Sun's garden, leading to a rift between the two. At the end of the episode, he repairs it and they reconcile.
  • Cliffhanger: A more low-key one than some of the show's more famous cliffhangers. Sayid, Charlie, and Ana Lucia arrive at the clearing on Henry's map, but the balloon is not immediately visible. Sayid begrudgingly agrees to continue searching. At the Hatch, Henry starts telling Jack and Locke how, if he was "one of them," he'd draw a map to a secluded spot for a trap and then his people would trade them for him, leaving the audience wondering what's going to happen next.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Ana Lucia tries to help Sayid work through his anger over Shannon's death, telling him that she takes responsibility for it, and that he has a right to hate her. This has the opposite effect, as Sayid responds that he doesn't blame her, but the Others, and he's impatient to prove "Henry" is one of them so he can punish him for it.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The pregnancy test that Sun takes was made by Widmore Labs.
  • Foreshadowing: Sun asks Kate if she's ever taken a pregnancy test and Kate confirms she has. The audience will see this in next season's "I Do".
  • Hypocritical Humor: Jack tells Sun that if she's keeping a secret from Jin, she should tell him the whole truth and leave nothing out. Immediately afterwards, he lies to Kate that nothing's going on in the hatch.
  • Lampshade Hanging: While waiting for Sun's result, Kate comments on how weird it is that someone was apparently travelling with a pregnancy test in their luggage.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Jin and Sun fail to conceive a child when they are trying to in flashbacks, then conceive entirely accidentally on the Island after Jin is said to be infertile. The latter is implied to be the result of the Island's healing powers curing Jin's infertility.
  • News Travels Fast: Jin asks Sun who else knows about her pregnancy. She replies that Jack and Kate know, Sawyer probably knows, and Jin confirms Bernard knows, so they'll lucky if there's anyone left to tell.
  • Pregnancy Test Plot: Sun has to ask Sawyer if he has a test in his stash, and surprisingly enough he does.
