Recap / King Of The Hill S 1 E 4 Hanks Got The Willies

Go To

Hank takes Bobby golfing to try and help him find a role model. But the trip goes wrong when Bobby tries to swing and accidentally hits Willie Nelson, who happens to be Hank's role model.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Willie Nelson accidentally refers to Hank as "Hank Hall".
  • Art Evolution: The "rooster boy" (Lyle Lovett) is drawn using a much more cartoonish art style than ever would be seen outside of imaginary sequences from Season 2 onwards.
  • As Himself: Willie Nelson, of course. And Dennis Hopper, who encourages Peggy to stick up for herself due to her jealousy of Hank's guitar.
  • The Cameo: A non-speaking one. As Hanks searches for Bobby, he shoves a man, who he calls "rooster boy" out of the way. The "rooster boy" is country singer and Julia Roberts's ex-husband Lyle Lovett.
  • Captain Obvious: Bobby accidentally hits Hank's truck with the lawn mower, causing the horn to go off. While Hank is trying to fix it, Bill flat out states the horn is going off, which Hank lampshades.
  • Cargo Envy: Peggy becomes incredibly jealous of Hank's guitar Betsy, due to the doting love Hank shows it. This comes to a boiling point where she buys a guitar at a garage sale just to break it.
  • Cassandra Truth: Subverted twice. The first is when Bobby calls Hank to come to Willie Nelson's house for a surprise. Hank doesn't buy it until he hears from the man himself, which leads Hank to believe Bobby has been stalking Willie. The second case is when Hank invites Peggy to Willie's home, but she doesn't believe him, snarking she's doing her toenails with Ann Richards. Willie Nelson then speaks to her, saying Ann is playing tether-ball.
  • Companion Cube: Hank loves his guitar, Betsy, so much, he even has it buckled up and have Bobby sit in the middle so it's protected by the air bag.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Former Texas governor Ann Richards is seen playing tether-ball with Willie Nelson's roadie a couple of seasons before she dates Bill in "Hank and the Great Glass Elevator".
  • Epic Fail: Luanne has a sub-plot where she's failing Beauty Academy, mainly braiding. She goes in to pass her test by going up to the braiding machine and ends up tying herself up.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: Subverted. At the end, Luanne is seen braiding Willie Nelson's hair, with it sparkling. While he does praise her braiding, he does tell her to lay off the glitter spray.
  • I Call It "Vera": As Hank calls his guitar, Betsy. Peggy even mocks him over it by calling the brush he was using to clean his golf club "Carlos".
  • Inappropriate Role Model: Hank gets desperate to set Bobby straight after hearing about his heroes: a protagonist in a Game Boy game, and the son of one of Hank's friends, a sickly kid who just plays on the computer all day, who disturbs Hank upon seeing him.
  • Intimidating Revenue Service: The IRS has repossessed Willie Nelson's house, forcing him to live in a trailer house next to it. Earlier we see they also did the same to his personal golf course, with government agents riding in their own golf cart with IRS on it.
  • Mean Character, Nice Actor: Dennis Hopper, whom Peggy likes from him playing that mad villain, is this, comforting Peggy over Hank's infatuation with Betsy and encourages her to stick up for himself, even offering to kick Hank's ass.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The comedian Celery-Head that Bobby idolizes is based off Carrot Top.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After hitting Willie Nelson, Dale attempts to do this by taking the golf cart and taking Bobby with him.
  • Silly Love Songs: Hank sings one about Peggy, who was approaching him to confront him about his guitar love, but her anger melts away when she hears the song.
  • The Unintelligible: Bob Dylan, who engages Boomhauer in conversation.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: After Bobby hurts Willie Nelson, he goes out of his way to make his father happy by getting Betsy and having Willie Nelson autograph it. Fortunately, it works out well for him.
