Recap / Family Guy S13— E10: Quagmire's Mom

Go To

Peter discovers his true first name and changes his personality. Meanwhile, Quagmire gets in trouble for statutory rape (only this time, it's not a cheap throwaway joke) and his mother, a born-again Christian who used to be just as promiscuous and sexually deviant as her son is now, tries to save him from serving prison time.

The episode contains examples of:

  • Alphabet Song: A flashback of Quagmire as a kid shows him singing the classic alphabet tune - using the names of the men his mother slept with for each letter.
  • And I Must Scream: Peter gets a birthday surprise at Bennigan's and is so elated that he's unable to move or talk. He gets placed in a section of the restaurant where others suffered this. When a waiter starts hitting on Lois, a tear runs down Peter's face.
  • Anti-Humor: The punchline to the Overly Long Gag with Peter waiting to sing the opening lyrics of "Baba O'Riley". What savvy viewers may expect is for either the karaoke machine to malfunction or for the Cutaway Gag to end right before Peter is about sing. Instead, it allows him to sing the very first line before answering the question that Lois asked right before the song began.
  • Bowdlerization: The following scenes were altered/edited between the TV version and the DVD version:
    • The cutaway of Stewie quitting his office job: on TV, his double middle-finger flip-off was blurred out, while on DVD, it isn't.
    • When Joe testifies during Quagmire's court case, Joe describes a makeshift sex toy in which a man urinates in a condom and freezes it. On the TV version, Joe's line after that is "...and then the woman, um, pretends it's a man." On the DVD version, Joe's line after describing how the condom is filled with urine and frozen is, "...and then [he] uses it to make love to the woman."
    • Cleveland's line about Quagmire when Cleveland testifies against him: On TV, Cleveland's line is "He's the one that mushed hisself on a child." On the DVD version, the line goes, "He's the one that banged a child."
  • Cowardice Callout:
  • Deadpan Snarker: Stewie has quite a few moments in this episode. For instance when the family sees Quagmire off outside of prison:
Stewie: You know some families take their baby to the zoo... that's also a fun activity.
    • Peter and Brian get some moments in too (especially Brian, considering his on-going feud with Quagmire).
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Quagmire sends photos of what he did with the underage girl to his friends before being arrested, which includes Joe who uses it as evidence against Quagmire.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When taken in the context of Quagmire's larger body of crimes, going on trial for what he does in this particular episode is an example of this. He had consensual sex with a 15-year-old girl who he mistook for a 23-year-old, and who was lying about her age. He comes off as the victim here, and yet he's put on trial, whereas previous episodes have shown him to be a serial rapist, which is played for laughs and he always gets off scot-free.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Brian takes every opportunity he gets this episode mock Quagmire about going to jail and is the only character to call him out on the fact that he is a grown man and should take responsibility for his own actions.
  • Dramatic Irony: Numerous past episodes had Quagmire allude to knowingly sleeping with minors, but he never suffered for it; as noted on this page alone, it was often treated as a joke along with his other escapades. This time, the girl lied about her age, and Quagmire almost goes to prison.
  • Freudian Excuse: Quagmire notes how his mother's deviancy and ways deeply affected him. He also notes his father wasn't around to counter any of this influence, due to military service. As noted below, the episode addresses different sides of the trope and the validity of Quagmire's complaint.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Though Quagmire may have had a neglected childhood and a horrible mother growing up, as the judge Lampshaded it doesn't give Quagmire an excuse to go around sleeping with underaged girls.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The episode begins with Peter acting like a teenager after finding out his real name is Justin. The rest of the episode involves Quagmire going trial for statutory rape.
  • Head Desk: Quagmire when Joe (under oath) has to explain to the court how Quagmire described the night with the teenage girl.
  • Heel–Faith Turn: Decon-Recon Switch: Quagmire's promiscuous mother, Crystal, claims to be a born again Christian and starts preaching, hoping for Quagmire to forgive her. Quagmire doesn't buy it for a minute, accusing her of using the religion to absolve herself of her past misgivings. It is only when Crystal admits her mistakes as a mother, shows sincere remorse, and actually helps Quagmire (by having sex with the judge) that he starts to come around.
Quagmire: But I thought you were Christian now?
Crystal: Helping my son is the most Christian thing I could do.
  • Hypocrite:
    • When Brian calls Quagmire out for not taking responsibility of his own actions:
Stewie: Brian abandoned his own son, by the way...
    • Quagmire's response is that an Atheist like himself shouldn't support a Christian like his mother. He previously called out Brian for being single minded and judgemental of other religions in his Atheist beliefs in "Jerome is the New Black".
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Brian is nonchalant to both the above nods (as he points out, he's not the one going to jail over it). And given how often Quagmire pontificated over Brian for his own pretentious attitude and lacking the ability to accept his faults like he does, Brian's still right to think Quagmire's completely myopic in this regard. The judge's prior verdict also makes perfectly clear they agree with Brian that Quagmire is responsible for his own actions.
    • After sleeping together and then learning from Keira that she takes the school bus to school thus revealing she's a minor, Quagmire calls out his date for lying about her age to get into bed with him. Keira just scuffs and points out that Quagmire lied too by claiming he loved her (just to get her into bed). Stumped by this, Quagmire just says to her "Well you got me there".
  • Hypocritical Humor: Quagmire sleeps with an underage girl and is immediately arrested by Joe. Quagmire texts "all my friends," including Joe, pornographic images of the girl, and Joe responds positively while still calling Quagmire disgusting.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Peter tries to proclaim Quagmire's innocence by claiming that he was born on February 29th and therefore, he's only 12 and therefore he was the one who was raped and not the underaged girl he slept with.
    Peter: Argo, Ben Affleck.
  • Irony: Quagmire is aghast that Brian sides with Crystal, despite him being an atheist that often ridicules Christians. Brian admits it's crazy and tells Quagmire it'll be something to think about while he's in prison.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Quagmire may have been pulling Never My Fault but his mother was a sexual deviant who was neglectful to him growing up. She does acknowledge she wasn't the best mother to Quagmire and realises her religious zeal does not provide any substantial help to healing their relationship.
  • Karma Houdini: Lampshaded by Peter:
Peter: Aww, Quagmire got away with it and learned nothing. That's great.
    • Ditto to the teenage girl who abandoned the jailed Quagmire, with Chris more or less lamp shading her presence as being a mere plot device.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: A cutaway has Peter attempting to abandon Meg in a field and drive off. He immediately crashes into a tree and is badly injured. The car then explodes, leaving him horribly burned and pleading for help.
  • Never My Fault: Quagmire tries to get out of his jail sentence by blaming the way his mother raised him for his behavior, refusing to acknowledge that it's his own actions that got him into trouble to begin with. He's later called out on his bullshit, though being from Brian it doesn't do much good.
  • No Sympathy: While Quagmire's friends and neighbors try to commute his sentence or at least try to offer him emotional support, Brian and Stewie leave his trial early to eat outside and would later mock him for his prison sentence. Brian is especially notable, as he actually calls out Quagmire on his crap and admits that he's excited to see him get raped in prison and will remind himself of it when he chokes on a link sausage.
  • Not Helping Your Case: Quagmire's retort to Brian stating he should be responsible for his actions is to ask why an atheist like Brian is defending a religious nut like his mother. The thing is that Brian isn't defending Quagmire's mom; he can state that Quagmire is a grown man responsible for his own actions without defending Quagmire's mom for her horrid behavior. His lack of a substantial answer to Brian only makes Quagmire look more guilty.
  • Overly Long Gag: In a Cutaway Gag, Peter waits through the opening of "Baba O'Riley" by The Who to sing the opening lines during karaoke.
  • Prison Rape: Peter, Brian, and Stewie take every opportunity to mock Quagmire with this, especially Brian, whose last line to Quagmire is, "I'll think of you when I choke on a sausage," then drives off in his Prius, screaming, "Yeah! Fresh air! Freedom!"
  • Really Gets Around: Quagmire's mother. The moment she announces her presence in the courthouse, multiple men refer to her by her first name. Mayor West lampshades it.
  • Running Gag: Quagmire loses yet another cat due to a neighbor (this time Joe).
  • Series Continuity Error: As evidenced by Stewie's quote above, the show still continues to fixate on the belief that Brian abandoned his son Dylan when in actuality the latter chose to leave on his own in order to take care of his mother/Brian's ex-girlfriend.
  • Sex for Services: As Quagmire is about to go to prison, the judge shows up alongside his mother to inform him that his sentence has been commuted. It turns out his mother managed to persuade him by way of sex.
  • Skewed Priorities: The police got a tip about Quagmire being with the teenage girl, and Joe confronts him about it. Quagmire admits he wants to deny it, but he also wants to take credit.
  • Whatever Happened to the Mouse?: The teenage girl that Quagmire slept with is never seen again after the first act. Chris lampshades this twice afterwards by asking for her whereabouts.
  • You Sound Familiar: Allison Janney (voice of the titular mother) previously appeared as a magazine editor in the Season 8 episode "Dial Meg For Murder".
