Recap / Fairy May Cry – Devil's Retribution, 42 "Creative Battle"

Go To

The Battle Royale continues as Gray and Rufus clash in a battle of Maker Magic, and a three-way dance goes down between Millianna, Dobengal, and Rocker. As this happens, Fairy Tail and Crime Sorciere are confronted by the Wolf Knights in the Palace of Perdition, along with a demon named Moloch.

  • Call-Back: Upon meeting Moloch, Natsu once again states his annoyance at fighting demons with massive egos.
  • Flaw Exploitation: Gray does this relentlessly to Rufus, not only making sure to keep the fight up close against the Long-Range Fighter, but stokes his opponents short temper with constant insults.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • The Wolf Knights decide that fighting Fairy Tail, Crime Sorciere and Dante all at once is beyond even them, and elect to release Moloch in order to even the odds. That said, none of them are happy about it.
    • Discussed by Fairy Tail and Crime Sorciere when Yukino attempts to convince them to leave the Eclipse Gate be, arguing it can be used for good. They agree that it would be worth the attempt if the world was on the brink of the apocalypse, but the present they have is nowhere near that point, and the risk of changing things for the worse far outweighs any potential benefits.
  • I Shall Taunt You: Part of Gray's success against Rufus comes from riling him up even further with constant insults, preventing him from focusing and using his Maker Magic effectively.
  • Underestimating Badassery: While the Wolf Knights take Dante very seriously, to the point they release a powerful demon to even the odds, they appear rather dismissive of the threat the rest of Fairy Tail and Crime Sorciere pose. Time will tell if it comes back to haunt them.
  • Victory by Endurance: Part of Gray's victory comes down to him being able to weather Rufus' attacks long enough to get in close and start exploiting his weaknesses.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Rufus grows increasingly enraged as his fight with Gray continues, made worse by his opponent mocking him even as he continues the beatdown.
