The Internet Is Forever

Directed by Glenn Kershaw
Written by Breen Frazier
Hotchner: "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place." George Bernard Shaw.
An UnSub kidnaps women who are active on social media and posts on their profiles that they're going away the morning after he takes them. Garcia discovers that he streamed the murders on a website. Reid finds that the victims' faces all have the same facial asymmetry.

Provides examples of:

  • Author Tract: This episode has the team comment a lot on how lame they think social media is, and how unsafe your information is on there.
  • Break Them by Talking: When they have the UnSub's accomplice, Austin Chapman, in custody, and he continues trying to pretend he's innocent, Rossi loses patience and bluntly tells Chapman that if he doesn't cooperate, Rossi will personally make sure his arrest is broadcast far and wide and Chapman's oblivious family knows exactly what kind of sicko he really is.
Rossi: When something goes out on the Internet, it's out there forever. Now, you're going to jail; that's a foregone conclusion. But unless you cooperate with me, I will do everything I can to make sure that the next time your grandkids Google you, they will find out what kind of a monster grandpa really is. Now, I will ask you once. Where is the freezer?
  • It's Personal: Garcia is determined to bust the UnSub, after having to watch one of his previous murders over a live feed.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Garcia hangs a lampshade on how "obscenely" good she is at hacking, mentioning how time-consuming it is.
  • Pet the Dog: The UnSub has been inside his victims' homes enough to be caught on security camera, and is seen being friendly with the dog who lives there.
  • Running Joke: Discussed. Derek tells Rossi the running joke on social media is that everyone thinks their lives are interesting enough to post about, but none of them are.
  • Villainous Breakdown: The UnSub freaks out when Garcia hacks into his computer, severs his Internet connection and locks him out of the server, preventing him from streaming his latest murder online.

Rossi: "The Internet is the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn't understand, the largest experiment in anarchy that we have ever had." Eric Schmidt.
