Recap / Cold Case S 6 E 22 The Long Blue Line

Go To

When the skeleton of Kate Turner, a military student thought to have gone AWOL, is dug up, the team looks into her apparent murder, and uncovers the military college she was attending had some skeletons of their own to hide.

Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: Poor Kate was harassed by an alumni who came to every color guard rally just to get drunk and cuss her out for being a girl in a male-dominated institution, out of resentment that she was accepted over his own son. She couldn’t fight back because she’d get in trouble for falling out of formation, and her fellow cadets either didn’t know how to help her, as they themselves were inexperienced with sexism, or just didn’t care. And of course, the staff at the school, the only people with the authority to tell the guy to back off, did nothing.
  • Double Standard: As one of the first girls enrolled in the academy, and the only one who stayed, seeing as the other girl cracked under the pressure after just one week, Kate had to fight harder than anyone else to be accepted by her fellow cadets. The poor girl even took an assault in the latrines while she was showering, because she didn’t want to accept help from others and come off as weak.
  • Who's on First?: A short version happens when Bell asks Miller out to see a band called "The Heartless Bastards":
    Miller: The who?
Bell: I wish it was The Who, but the venue's a little small.
