Tropes

  • Gilligan Cut: Calvin has finally triumphed over the bicycle, letting the air out of the tires and celebrating the fact that he's finally safe. Cut to his father having re-inflated the tires while installing training wheels, meaning the bicycle is back to full mobility.
  • Learning to Ride a Bike: Calvin initially tries to learn how to ride his bicycle, but the arc quickly turns into the bicycle attacking him, and Calvin trying to destroy it.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: While hiding from the bicycle, Calvin comes across Susie whom he tells of his plan to damage it if he comes across it first. Before leaving, Calvin says, "You never saw me today, got it?"
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Yet another story arc where the reader is never told if Calvin's bicycle is actually sentient and malicious, or if he's just imagining it due to his fear of riding it. The bicycle hides in his room, and when Mom answers Calvin's cries for help, she assumes he brought it to his closet.
  • Morton's Fork: Calvin is asked to take out the trash, giving him the choice of getting chewed out by Mom or mangled by his bicycle.
  • Poke the Poodle: The arc begins with the bicycle scaring Calvin by blowing a raspberry.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: After an extended battle between Calvin and the bicycle, Calvin has decided to just hide in a tree for the rest of his life. Hobbes suggests just putting a big stick through the spokes of the front wheel, since it won't be able to go anywhere if the wheel can't spin. Calvin does it, and it works perfectly.
