Tropes

  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: Much of Nassau reacts to Eleanor’s arrest by celebrating and hanging her in effigy.
  • Come to Gawk: Flint is chained to the stocks in the town square so all the people of Charles Town can see him powerless.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Miranda’s body is propped up in the town square where the mob pelt it with rocks and rotten vegetables as a warning to pirate accomplices.
  • Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit: Wisely, when Silver reveals the lie about the Urca gold, he chooses to put the blame squarely on Vincent and Nicholas, who are dead and in no position to argue.
  • Enemy Mine: Vane and Flint both hate each other, and Vane's crew killed many men on Flint's crew and tortured Silver so badly that his leg has to be amputated, but they have to work together to get out of Charles Town, and with the looming threat of war on piracy, they put aside their rivalry and work together for their survival.
  • Kangaroo Court:
  • Last Stand: According to Rackham, despite losing men from an unspecified tropical disease, the Spanish garrison at Division Bay still had enough healthy men left that the crew of the Colonial Dawn had a proper fight on their hands.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Colonel Rhett and his men are blown to bloody bits by a single broadside from the Spanish Man O' War.
  • Make an Example of Them: Defied by Vane, who tries to rescue Flint to stop Charles Town from hanging him as a warning to all pirates.
    • Played straight by Flint, who decides to destroy Charles Town as a warning to anyone who would dare cross him.
  • Put on a Bus:
    • Abigail is sent to Savannah by her father the morning of the trial. He claims its because he doesn't want her exposed to the scandal and fury of a trial but she suspects its because he doesn't want her saying the wrong thing to the wrong person.
    • After taking Eleanor into custody, Captain Hume is never seen again. Seeing as the object of this exercise was to get a posting away from the Bahamas, its likely he secured a better posting for himself.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Vane springs his plan to rescue Flint into action, Flint takes advantage of the chaos to mortally wound Ashe with his sword before making it back to the ship. Instead of escaping straight away, Flint proceeds to unleash the ships' firepower upon the city, bombarding it to rubble and killing hundreds of its citizens, making good on a promise he made to Ashe before escaping:
Flint: "Her word will be the last word for this place!.''
  • Internal Reveal: With both his co-conspirators dead and no way of keeping the gold anyway, Silver elects to tell Flint the partial truth about the deception.
  • Rank Up: Silver is elected the crew's new Quartermaster.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Vane gives a brief, but succinct one to the people of Charles Town, just before he signals his men to attack.
Vane: "These men convinced you that they speak for you! That the power you've given them is used in your interests! That the prisoner before you is your enemy and they your friends! For those of you who live to see tomorrow... know that you had a choice to see the truth and you let yourselves be convinced otherwise!"
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Jenks and the men left to guard the Walrus men while Vane is in Charlestown would love nothing more then to just hoist sail and get out of dodge rather then try to take on the Charlestown defences with only a handful of men, but Vane left him too few men to effectively crew the massive Spanish warship. This induces him to try and get Silver to name some Walrus men who could be convinced to defect and help him crew the ship.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Knowing that no one will listen to him at his trial, Flint accepts the accusation marking him as an enemy of civilization.
Captain Flint: "Everyone is a monster to someone. Since you are so convinced that I am yours, I will be it."
  • Torture Technician: Averted. The way Jenks interrogates Silver is obscenely brutal and has none of the refinement or expertise that usually defines this archetype.
  • With My Hands Tied: Flint and Vane both have to fight their way out of Charles Town with their hands shackled.
