Basic Trope: Exactly what the trope name suggests — misspelling a word out loud.

  • Straight: Spencer tries to spell "desire" out loud, and ends up saying "D-I-S-I-R-E".
  • Exaggerated:
    • Spencer spells it "D-I-Z-A-H-Y-U-H".
    • Spencer tries to spell out an entire sentence, and messes up every word beyond recognition.
  • Downplayed:
    • Spencer is American, and accidentally uses the British spelling while spelling "color" out loud.
    • Spencer misspells a word as a different word — essentially a spoken Rouge Angles of Satin.
  • Justified:
    • Spencer is Book Dumb.
    • Spencer is participating in a Spelling Bee, and messes up due to his nerves.
    • Spencer is still learning English, so of course he's gonna mess up sometimes.
  • Inverted:
    • Spencer is asked to spell a misspelled word out loud, and corrects the spelling.
    • Spencer says "That's my D-E-S-I-R-E! Desire!", and manages to mispronounce "desire".
  • Subverted:
    • Spencer spells out "D-I-S...", hesitates, and corrects himself.
    • While not the word the jury wanted him to spell, they agree that as a full homophone it should count as perfectly spelled.
  • Double Subverted: He ends up misspelling it as "desiah" instead.
  • Parodied:
    • Spencer spells out an entirely different word.
    • Spencer spells out "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis" correctly, and proceeds to mess up a bunch of easy words.
  • Zig-Zagged:
  • Averted: Spencer manages to spell out "desire" correctly.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded:
    Spencer: That's my D-I-S-I-R-E! ...I screwed that up, didn't I?
  • Invoked: Spencer's "friend" Louis gives him the "helpful" spelling tip that "there's no 'e' in 'desire'".
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
    • "Spencer, remember that there are two E's in 'desire'!"
    • Spencer gives up on spelling out "desire" before he messes it up.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed: "Dumb characters should realize that trying to spell something out loud will just make them look dumber."
  • Played for Laughs: Spencer tries to call someone else "S-T-E-W-P-I-D".
  • Played for Drama: Spencer participates in a Spelling Bee, and goes out early when he accidentally misspells "desire". Now he's nervous about what kind of punishment his Abusive Parents will give him...
