As the successor of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, it was virtually a given the internet would have fun with this new incarnation of the ponies.
General series memes
- Short Pipp explanationPipp Petals is somewhat shorter than the rest of the main characters. Considering G4's Mane Six all had the same body type and height, with Twilight becoming slightly taller after becoming an alicorn, this caught the fanbase's attention. This is often exaggerated by drawing Pipp as even smaller than she is in the series, or by giving her Height Angst.
- Pippasprite explanationA screenshot of Pipp Petals dangling from the wires the royal family used to fake having the ability to fly resulted in her looking like a winged Armless Biped with no neck. Comparisons to the Parasprites from the prior generation soon followed.
- Just Turned X explanationA children's birthday card showing Pipp Petals with the text "Just Turned 5" was quickly lampooned by changing the text or adding an absurd amount of zeros to make the age ridiculous.
- Evil Rarity/Shark Rarity explanationThe sudden change in appearance of Rarity in the animated opening from the cute chipper heroine from the last generation into a fanged, red-eyed, cackling monster as Sprout derails Sunny's playtime fantasy.
- Tennis Ball Horn explanationEven before the movie was released, Izzy getting a tennis ball stuck on her horn dominated depictions of the character in fanart.
- Pony Race WarexplanationThe ponies are segregated by species in the story, and interact rarely enough that seeing a unicorn in an earth-pony village is cause for panic and treated like an enemy invasion. Seeing as how ponies lived together at the time of FIM, it led to jokes about the ponies having had a race war for whatever reason since then. Became less a meme after it's revealed that was explicit backstory.
- BeansexplanationWhen Sunny asks Izzy to show her some unicorn magic, Izzy simply uses her horn as a makeshift can opener for a can of baked beans, causing it to drop to the floor and spill. It quickly became a fan favorite moment of the trailer.
- Sprout hates doors.explanationSprout hits himself with doors quite a lot as a Running Gag throughout the movie. Cue this video.
- "Bing-bong!"explanationThe unicorns' instinctive ritual to avoid bad luck upon hearing any of the jinxed words.
- Mayonnaise explanationDue to the word "mayonnaise" being humorously and inexplicably jinxed in unicorn culture, saying "mayonnaise" quickly became a meme as something that one is not supposed to say in the brony fandom. This has even tied in to Spongebob Squarepants' own memetic mutation, "Is mayonnaise an instrument?".
- Around the World explanationIt is relatively frequent to put the dance to remove the bad luck of the unicorns to the rhythm of Around the World, by Daft Punk; some will even use the full version .
- Donut LordexplanationDue to sharing the same actor as Tom from the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a few fans have started calling Hitch "Donut Lord".
- My Average Height Pony explanationSunny responding to Alphabittle referring to her by the franchise-wide "little pony" description by pointing out that she's actually "average height" for a pony has caught on with the fandom.
- "That magic was NOT yours to give!" explanationA fan-made comic depicting Sunny being confronted by an old, bitter Twilight Sparkle about bringing the magic back to Equestria.
- Hitch's chin explanationIn Tell Your Tale, Hitch has a noticibly more pronounced chin than he does in A New Generation or Make Your Mark. This led to people overexaggerating how large his chin is, or comparing Hitch to other characters with large chins such as Kronk, Metro Man and the Crimson Chin.
- Pippamena explanationThe unhinged face Pipp makes when Posey only gives her a 3-star review in "Mane Melody" quickly became the subject of many fanedits, outright turning Pipp into a Memetic Psychopath named Pippamena (a Call-Back to a similar portrayal of G4's Pinkie Pie).
- Posey holding grudge against Izzy explanationDuring 'Senor Butterscotch', Izzy annoys Posey at the cinema, blocking her view as well as spilling food and drink onto her. Shortly after this episode was released, a trailer for Make Your Mark special was released which showed Posey as an antagonist. This led to jokes that Posey's main motivation for being an antagonist was holding a grudge over Senor Butterscotch.
- Sassy Sunglasses Sunny explanationSunny's reaction to Zipp's accusation of sunglass thievery (pulling her own sunglasses and a smoothie from Hammerspace) have been spread around due it being a rare moment of Sunny sassing somepony.
- Jazz has no ears! explanationJazz Hooves, one of the recurring characters has become notorious for not having her ears visible in the series. Especially jarring since they are clearly visible in "Tell Your Tale".
