Heartwarming / No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished

  • Justin shows up and bluntly says that he's Julius's knight now. Partly because it's better than waiting for Conrad to die, but mostly because he is genuinely impressed with how Julius has handled the whole situation. It's an especially strong contrast to the rest of the Js later, who blatantly try to rewrite their history of bullying as being part of a secret plot to make Julius stronger.
Justin: I want what I've always wanted: to be the champion of the biggest, best clan in the world. When Bethesda was the Heartstriker, that meant working for her. But then she said some things that made me realize she wasn't the all-powerful clan head I thought she was, and after you beat her, the choice only got easier. Unlike Mother, you've always been there when I needed you. That's what a clan needs: someone who will fight for all of us, not just themselves. You do that, so I fight for you.
  • General Jackson is initially just a bit surprised that Julius managed to usurp Bethesda, but she is very impressed when she hears that he's reformatting the clan into a democracy. She doesn't even get mad that he can't help during the emergency because of it—she just tells him she hopes it works out. She's literally the first person Julius has spoken to who actually thought his plan was a good idea, and he almost falls over himself in thanks.
  • Ian throws his support behind Julius wholeheartedly. Sure, when he talks about Julius's ideals he sounds like a villain plotting to take over the world, but he still believes in the basic idea of a clan where they don't have to kill their brothers and sisters for power.
For the first time ever, he'd watched a room full of ruthless dragons who didn't agree work something out on their own—without resorting to threats, trying to trap each other in debts, or backstabbing each other into the floor. Granted, that was a low bar by human standards, but for Bethesda's children, it was progress. Enormous progress, and Julius had never felt prouder. Even if it all came to nothing in the end, right now, right here, in this room, he'd watched a little piece of his clan change for the better, and it felt like the victory of a lifetime.
  • Conrad's words to Bethesda while observing Julius's and Gregory's "fight".
Conrad: But that’s Julius’s power, isn’t it? He sincerely wants a better future, and he’s willing to put his life on the line for it. That kind of conviction inspires others. It makes them want to help him, if only to see what kind of world he’d create if he won.
