Midnight Sun is a 2018 American romantic drama film. It is based on the 2006 Japanese film A Song to the Sun.

Katie Price (Bella Thorne) is a teenage girl who suffers from xeroderma pigmentosum, a life-threatening illness which prevents her from going out into sunlight. After meeting her longtime crush Charlie (Patrick Schwarzenegger) at the train station one night, she begins to form a relationship with him while hiding her condition.

This movie was the first ever movie lead role for Patrick Schwarzenegger, son of veteran actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Tropes associated with this film:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Katie finally gets to live out the dream she had by riding on Charlie's boat with him in the sunlight, but passes away offscreen some time later. Her song however, has gotten major hits.
  • I Need to Iron My Dog: When Katie first meets Charlie, she becomes so flustered and nervous she immediately tries to leave and claims she has to go to her dead cat’s funeral as an excuse. Naturally, Charlie isn’t surprised when she later admits it wasn’t true.
  • Spoiler Cover: The poster for the movie spoils the climax where a dying Katie joins Charlie on a boat ride.
  • Tag Line: "Dreams come true at night."
  • Weakened by the Light: Katie has XP, meaning she cannot be exposed to the sun and can only go out at night. She also has her windows outfitted with special glass.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: After being exposed to the sun for a few seconds, Katie learns her brain is contracting and there’s only a short time left before she dies.
