Allie McClain and her five college friends decide to spend their weekend at an isolated ranch owned by her father that is near the Idaho wilderness. However, they soon find trouble when they piss off the caretaker of the grounds, an unstable war veteran with a dark past.
This film provides examples of:
- Asshole Victim: The three guys from the opening were already jerks, but then you find out later that they're much worse.
- Boom, Headshot!: How Ben kills Jessica and Tom, courtesy of a pistol.
- Creepy Souvenir: Ben keeps the organs of his wife and daughter in jars that he uses for a shrine.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Evan's first attempt to fight Ben, doesn't end so well.Ben: (intercepts Evan's attack, punches him in the stomach, and throws him to the ground) Sit down, son.
- Dark and Troubled Past: While Ben was off serving as a US Marine, a trio of men raped and murdered his wife and daughter out in the wilderness. When he got back and was told of their disappearance, he went out and searched endlessly until coming across their corpses.Allie: I think it hit him pretty hard coming home to nothing.
- Developing Doomed Characters: Everyone in the group dies, aside from Allie whose fate is left ambiguous after being taken to the hospital by some paramedics.
- Insurance Fraud: Tom had Ben kill his wife so he'd get her life insurance, in exchange Ben would get to be caretaker of the land.
- Interrupted Suicide: Ben had a gun in his mouth before Tom called and made him the deal.
- Land Mine Goes "Click!": As part of the extreme measures he goes through to protect his land, Ben buried land mines all around the forest. He later baits Eduardo into stepping on one.Ben: You heard it... That's the click of a land mine, friend.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Ben climbs on top of Evan and delivers several hard punches to his face, then gets up and fires two bullets into his head.
- Serial Killer: In addition to the ten people he kills in the film, Ben's implied to be behind most of the disappearances in the wilderness that are talked about on the radio.
- Sound-Only Death:
- When one of the guys from the opening gets caught in a rope trap, Ben appears and charges at him with a combat knife drawn. The scene cuts away to a shot of the forest and we hear his scream.
- The group hears a coyote get caught in one of Ben's traps off-screen.
- Eduardo and Nina get blown up by the land mine off-screen.
- Tongue Trauma: "What's the matter, sweetheart? Has the cat got your tongue...? Oh, that's right. I got your tongue."
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Ben was already on edge, but the group being snarky and meddling in his business, combined with two of them breaking into his trailer to have sex, is what sets him off.Ben: Ed, You come here. You disrespect my place. You treat your woman like a whore— That you are. You take her into my trailer. You break in. You fuck her in front of my wife and daughter. You fuck her?!
Eduardo: What are you talking about? There was no one in that trailer.
Ben: Yes, there was. They were there... You saw them. They were just sleeping.
