Strong and Steady is a series of Alternate Universe Yo Kai Watch fanfics penned by NoonboryKedabory. Initially hosted on FanFiction.Net, the series is currently found on Archive of Our Own.
The series focuses on Bear and Eddie, who have their own Yo-Kai Watches. They are accompanied by Roughraff, Bear's Yo-Kai companion, Tongus, Eddie's Yo-Kai companion, and Annie, a fourth-grader obsessed with Yo-Kai.
Tropes:
- All There in the Manual: While it's never used in the story, the tags reveal Annie's Japanese name to be Fuyuko Chibara, and Maddie's Japanese name to be Kagami.
- April Fools' Plot: "April Fool's", where Negasus inspirits kids to pull cruel pranks.
- Catch Your Death of Cold: Inverted; in "I Got You, Little Buddy", Frostina becomes very weak from being outside on a warm day.
- Deadpan Snarker: Rather than a Jerkass, Roughraff is more on the sarcastic side.
- Family Theme Naming: Cousins Eddie and Maddie, as well as their Japanese names, Kanchi and Kagami.
- In-Series Nickname: Roughraff refers to Maddie as "Madzilla".
- Mood Whiplash: In "I Got You, Little Buddy" chapter 1; Bear promises the school nurse he'll make sure Eddie's mother knows he's ill, and prepares the brave the rain to get him home. Cut to Bear blitzing through Springdale like a chicken, with Tongus and Roughraff barely able to keep up.
- Motor Mouth: One of the first Yo-Kai introduced is Babblong, who, true to fashion, makes Mr. Johnson ramble on forever.
- Named by the Adaptation: Eddie's parents' names are given as George and Miriam.
- Out Sick: Eddie is mostly absent for the second chapter of "I Got You, Little Buddy", leaving Bear to deal with the Yo-Kai alone and unprepared.
- Shout-Out:
- The main character in Tongus' manga is said to wear a Peachy Momozono dress.
- Tongus names the four roses she receives Juliet, Belle, Flamenco, and Isabela.
- One of the stories is titled "A Rope of Sand".
- Sick Episode: "I Got You, Little Buddy" is this for Eddie.
- Sickness Equals Redness: Eddie's face is flushed pink in "I Got You, Little Buddy".
- Sleepyhead: Eddie becomes very lethargic when sick, and spends most of the illness asleep.
- Strong Family Resemblance: Maddie is Eddie's cousin, but resembles him enough that she could pass as his twin sister; something that Roughraff quips on.
- Transformation Sequence: Tongus does one of these to turn into Nurse Tongus in "I Got You, Little Buddy".
