Sent to a graveyard in Britain, a group of Valkyries discover brutally-slaughtered Death Eaters...and a traumatised teenaged wizard, with not just one, but two disparate powers. Harry Potter is taken back to Asgard, where he is watched over by rookie Valkyrie Rossweisse. Thus begins an unlikely friendship...

Óskmey is a Harry Potter & High School D×D (with a smidge of God of War) Crossover fanfic written by Quatermass where Harry awakens two new powers after watching Pettigrew kills Cedric Diggory and tortured by Voldemort; a Sacred Gear and magic from Jotunn blood.

Beware of unmarked Spoilers!

The story has the following examples:

  • A-Cup Angst: Harry obliviously overhears Ginny whisper that there is something that "can't be real" after Rossweisse introduces herself to Harry's family, which is implied to be the Valkyrie's breast.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Harry already has gotten tired of the Wizarding World after the whole Dementors and Sirius being falsely accused of murdering his parents, then he was forced to participate in the TriWizard tournament, with all the attention he gets from it. Massacring Death Eaters after seeing Cedric killed — just because he was dragged by the portkey trophy with him by accident and Voldemort wants to Leave No Witnesses — and being repeatedly Crucio'd by Voldemort, before being labeled as Magical Britain's fugitive because of it is just icing on the cake. Not to mention how he learns that his father is actually Loki, that he essentially brainwashed his mom to have a relationship with him and made Harry, all due to a prophecy, before making her kill herself to fulfill said prophecy.
  • Adaptational Context Change:
    • While Harry got ostracized after his encounter with Death Eaters in the graveyard in both times, in Canon, it was because Harry's insisting that Voldemort had returned is seen by the public as him being delusional caused by the trauma of seeing Cedric die. Here, it was because he killed "fine and upstanding" pureblood citizens with unknown magic.
    • Harry burning Quirrel with his touch in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was actually caused by Weregild Lilja in this fic.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Rossweisse, and The Nordic Faction as a whole, which appears way later into High School D×D's canon, is the focus of the fic.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Lily, due to being mind-controlled into a relationship with James Potter, is manipulated to kill herself so the prophecy of his demise by her hand is nulled, and eventually learns of the abuse and "adventures" he went through during her dormancy makes her a bit more foul-mouthed and short-tempered than canon.
  • Adaptational Explanation: Rossweisse explains that what makes Wizarding World's magic anti-electronic is that it emits a small EMP-like effect. The older tech that still uses vacuum tubes is perfectly usable, but Wizarding World, and the rest of the supernatural world to a lesser extent, are still slow to change due to their conservative values, with The Underworld having the closest technological gap with the human world, and Asgard just catching up to them recently.
  • Adaptational Karma: It took Pettigrew to be killed 3 books later for him to receive his karma. Here, Harry managed to freeze him in his Animagus form, ready for Azkaban.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection:
    • After quitting working at Hogwarts, Lupin manages to find work as a private teacher for Kunou, the daughter of the Youkai faction's leader.
    • Sindri met Kiba back when he recently became Rias' Knight and still named Isaiah to learn about Sword Birth under Odin's order.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Harry being part-Jotunn from being the son of Loki.
  • Adaptational Villainy: James Potter is this as he is the High School D×D's Loki, and Lily notes how she thinks there is some mind control involved in their relationship and how he makes her kill herself to fulfill the prophecy about Harry while denying the one about James/Loki's death by her hands.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Downplayed; Harry is afraid of losing himself in Unstoppable Rage again from using the Jotunn's ice magic, but he keeps training with it, knowing that there's a chance that he would need to use it.
  • Air Jousting: While Rossweisse can teach how to fight mid-air, she suggests not to do it too often or without numbers considering it makes them more open to long-range attacks unless they can use invisibility or camouflage spells.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Asia. After hearing how much Harry hates himself for how violent he can be with his Jotunn blood, she insists on praying for Harry's sake.
"*Smiles sadly* Harry…you've gone through a bad life. While killing is a sin, those you killed, as you said, were the worst kind of killers. But you…you would kill only as a last resort. And even though you are with the Norse pantheon, and even though I am a Devil, and would suffer pain from praying…I will do so. To give succor to your soul if nothing else."
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Downplayed; Rossweisse was often teased about how she prefers to focus on studying and work instead of partying and finding an Einherjar to date like the rest of them, with Sanngridr and her posse being more overtly bullying than most, calling her "The Spinster Valkyrie" for how passive her lifestyle is to the more hedonistic Valkyries.
  • All Your Powers Combined:
    • Downplayed; According to Rossweisse after the spar, she can tell Koneko has learned various martial arts to complement her role as the Rook, but it feels less mastering said martial arts and more cherry-picking its Special Attacks.
    • Played Straight with Brynhildr, as she creates her own fighting style that she teaches to other Valkyries and is also viable for aerial combat by combining various martial arts, including Krav Maga, Sambo, Defendu, Karate, and wrestling.
  • Alpha Bitch: Sanngridr Translation can be considered this for the Valkyries, considering she comes from a rich family and uses her status to get what she wants and have a posse. She even insults Brynhildr, her captain, for being a Celibate Heroine like Rossweisse.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Gondül tells Harry the story of how Rossweisse discovered that she Can't Hold Her Liquor and tease her for it, much to her embarrassment.
  • An Ice Person: Harry is now able to use ice magic thanks to his Jotunn blood's power.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Discussed; From reading the files about Rias' peerage's background, Rossweisse at first concludes that the Gremory princess is opportunistic enough to offer these teenagers salvation when they have no other option, which is pretty common for Devils. But Sindri, who had met her before, vouched for her kindness and fair treatment of her peerage, seeing them as her confidant and family. Even Rias later admits that she can see other people see her peerage recruitment the way Rossweisse initially assumes.
Rias: That's fair. From at least one viewpoint, I could be seen as taking advantage of them during the lowest points in their lives. None of them really had much choice whether to join my Peerage or not. But I have never intended to exploit my Peerage, not like some Devils do. My parents, for all my issues with them, drilled into me that I have to treat my Peerage with respect and kindness. So too did my brother Sirzechs
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When Dumbledore hears Lily's voice from Harry's gauntlet, he asks if it's actually her. She retorts that she's Voldemort's Horcrux wanting to kill everyone.
  • Asshole Victim: Discussed; Fudge argues that the Death Eaters are victims, but there are other people who agree that Death Eaters are unrepentant blood purists, if not that what Harry did was in self-defense.
McGonagall: Mr Potter, while what happened was a trifle excessive, and I would have preferred it resolved another way, the fact remains is that those present at the graveyard were intending to sit by and watch you be murdered by You Know Who. In the end, you defended yourself against those vile excuses for people. Am I disquieted by what happened? Any reasonable person would be. But I also recognize the circumstances. And you clearly do not revel in their deaths or the violent ways they were caused, which is heartening. But…too many are baying for your head, even those who weren't followers of You Know Who.
  • Awful Truth: Harry was stunned to learn that not only does James mind control Lily to have a relationship with her and that Harry, by that fact, is a Child by Rape, but that she sacrificed her life by his command.
  • Battle Couple: Harry & Rossweisse slowly becomes this thanks to her teaching him how to fight.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Harry grows fond of Rossweisse because she didn't judge him for having a Jotunn lineage and the accidental murder of the Death Eaters, while the Valkyrie grows fond of him because he didn't look down on her for being a studious nerd unlike most of the Valkyries.
  • Befriending the Bullied: What Harry's friendship with Rossweisse effectively is.
  • Bizarre Gambling Winnings: Sirzechs ends up winning some favors from Odin from winning poker night, which he decides to cash in by asking his help to rescue Rias from her Arranged Marriage legally, which Odin chooses to do by sending Harry & Rossweisse to help her train to win the Rating Game.
  • Boyfriend Bluff: Lily proclaims Harry & Rossweisse as a couple in front of Sanngridr to make her back off, to Rossweisse's embarrassment.
  • Busman's Holiday: Atreus told Sindri to tag along with Harry & Rossweisse to Japan for a sabbatical. The first thing the Dwarf does after settling in? Visiting the Youkai faction to learn Japanese smithing techniques from Muramasa's & Masamune's descendants.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': While Harry does it under the influence of his Unstoppable Rage, and Brynhildr plus Odin himself handing over Cedric's body and explaining things to the people of Magical Britain, Cornelius Fudge still wants Harry arrested for killing many of "fine and upstanding" pureblood, something that Harry expects.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Exaggerated with Rossweisse; he even gets drunk from Butterbeer to Sirius' amused shock and Remus' & Harry's horror.
Remus: She told us she has low alcohol tolerance. But no…you decided to push matters.
Sirius: Hey, it was Butterbeer. Butterbeer, Moony! Who gets drunk off Butterbeer?!
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Harry freezes Pettigrew, but not killing him, because he needs him to prove Sirius's innocence.
"Do you feel that, Wormtail? Imagine how Sirius felt when he was in Azkaban, with the Dementors sapping at his happiness and warmth. You don't get a second chance to escape this time! You're lucky I need you to prove Sirius' innocence, or I'd do to you what I did to the rest of them!"
  • Celebrity Is Overrated:
    • Harry tells Issei, who asked what it is like to be famous, that fame is more of a burden than a boon for him, even before the Death Eater massacre.
Issei: Rias was telling us how you're some famous wizard in Britain. What's it like, being famous?
Harry: …Like a rollercoaster in bad repair. [...] …being famous was shitty, even before then (the Death Eaters massacre). And if you're going to say something like what about girls throwing themselves at me…well, I didn't want that. I was famous because I was orphaned, and I would have given it all just to have my parents back...or so I thought.
    • Rias asks both Harry & Rossweisse about their experience in enduring fame and its expectation to compare it with her own as the Gremory's princess, with Rossweisse answers that her grandmother's reputation neither hinders nor aids her as a Valkyrie trainee, while Harry mentions how it is overwhelming.
Rossweisse: Rias…I could be facetious and say 'with difficulty', but that's actually something of the truth. Though to be frank, the expectations made of me weren't as great as those who derided me for being serious in my learning and training. [...] What's the old British phrase, the one from World War II? "Keep calm, and carry on."
Harry: As for me…well, it was pretty much the same. Unlike you, though, I grew up unaware of my fame, of the expectations made of me. [...] I loved the adoration, but I also had people trying to exploit me or deriding me for my fame. But I sort of couldn't help but be a hero, getting into adventures. Of course, that ended up with me being a fugitive from Magical Britain. So, sorry, Rias, I'm not sure my story counts when it comes to dealing with expectations, if only because of how badly it ended.
  • Celestial Bureaucracy: Harry notes for a pantheon that inspired by and from the Vikings, Asgard is heavy on paperwork.
  • Charm Person: Loki has charmed several people to get what he wants, including Lily & Dumbledore. It was powerful enough that even Dumbledore Incapable of Disobeying his command, and only someone like Odin can break it.
  • Chick Magnet: Apparently, lots of grown-up Valkyries find Sirius attractive, to Brynhildr's frustration.
  • Child Prodigy: Harry notes that Asia can grasp and learn Wizarding Magic much easier than he thought.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Deconstructed; After defeating her in the spar, Rossweisse tells Akeno that her "toying with her food" attitude is one of her main weaknesses, and it will be a liability in more high-stakes and/or life-or-death battles.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Harry & Rossweisse, have both been through bullying.
    • Sindri, a Neat Freak, respects Rias' constant showering habit.
  • Compliment Backfire: Sanngridr tries to seduce Harry to join her, but he sees her attempt for what it really is; an attempt to prove her superiority to Rossweisse.
Sanngridr: I'm sure Rossweisse is boring you. You wanna have fun, I can take you to get some fun.
Harry: I'm fine, thank you. Rossweisse has been a delightful company so far.
Sanngridr: Really? You must have a weird idea of fun. You don't want to go around making friends with the wrong sort of person. I can help you there.
Harry: *Gritting teeth* I think I can tell what the wrong sort of person for myself. I'm looking at one now. Go away.
  • Composite Character: As it turns out, James Potter is actually Loki in disguise.
  • Corralling Vacuum: The spell Rossweisse invented for the Rating Game creates a localized vacuum field bubble to prevent Riser from using his fire magic and overwork their regeneration to keep them alive until Riser is forced to ring out by the Rating Game system.
  • Crossover Power Acquisition:
    • Harry has a Sacred Gear named Weregild Lilja and can cast ice magic thanks to his Jotunn blood.
    • Harry teaches Asia some of the Wizarding World's spells to balance her skillsets as The Medic.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • While we didn't get to see it, Rossweisse manages to trounce Sanngridr in a duel.
    • Downplayed as the spar is meant to see their strength & weakness, but Rossweisse easily defeats Rias and her peerages, with Kiba being the only one that can keep up with her.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Lily enacted a dark ritual she learned during her time working at the Department of Mysteries that let her soul bond with Harry's as a Sacred Gear to protect him after she died.
  • Deadpan Snarker: It wouldn't be Harry without being this, now would he?
"*After Rias tells her peerages' Dark and Troubled Past as the response to him telling Issei his* …I don't think we're here to compare shitty childhoods."
  • Death by Adaptation: The Death Eaters, including Voldemort, died from Harry's rampage from being frozen solid, impaled by icicles to being frozen then shattered.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Harry lampshades this by noting that it might be difficult to train Rias' peerages because it might need them to get over their respective hangups.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When Rossweisse allows Rias' peerages to ask her any questions, Issei first asks her if all Valkyries are as hot as her. When she clarifies that she expecting a serious question, he retorts that a girl's sexiness is a Serious Business to him.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Rossweisse has one when she is soaking in a bathtub during the 10-day training period, which led to her inventing the localized vacuum field bubble spell.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Brynhildr is actually a title for the highest-ranking Valkyrie to honor the original namesake.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Issei, being a pervert, has several standards; he won't ogle a woman who is already in a relationship, he thinks incest is only interesting in fiction, and he swears that he is interested in having Harem both romantically & sexually.
    • Even Riser is not interested in incest; while his sister, Ravel, is part of his peerage, he keeps her separate from his harem.
    • When Harry asks if he screwed something up by giving Ravel his autograph, considering how he was forced to participate in the TriWizard tournament because someone put his signature into the Goblet of Fire, Rias tells him that neither her nor her brother would stoop that low.
    • Akeno is a sadist, but even she thinks Rosseweisse's explanation of the effect of decompression on a person is too morbid for her.
  • Evil Gloating: Dumbledore learns of James' true nature as Loki and his whole plan because he was gloating in front of him because the principal cannot break through the God of Trickster's mind control.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: Harry admits that he stopped believing in God after none of his prayers regarding the Dursleys ever answered.
  • Explosive Decompression: Conversed; As Rossweisse explains the concept of the new spell she tries to make for the Rating Game would be a localized vacuum field bubble, Issei mentions this trope when asking if that spell won't be overkill for Riser since, as much as he dislikes Rias' fiancee, he didn't want him to explode into chunks. Rossweisse answers that the trope is actually a Hollywood Science, and the real effect of vacuum space on living beings, while equally painful and gruesome, is not as extreme.
  • Fantastic Racism: Rossweisse mentions how Jotunn isn't well-liked in Asgard, hence why she is assigned to guard Harry during his stay there.
  • The Fashionista: Downplayed; Rossweisse actually likes to shop in Max20 & variety stores for her clothes. Doesn't stop Harry from finding her attractive, even in a cheap tracksuit.
  • The Fettered: Rossweisse explains that she chooses to be a Valkyrie to protect people, not for combat. While she won't hesitate to fight or even kill, to protect the defenseless, she will not let herself grow numb from it.
" Some of my peers still treat death as a trivial matter, especially as Valkyries, being semi-divine, are near immortal, and can bring back the dead to some degree. But…I do not. Einherjars, Evil Pieces, they are exceptions, not the rule.[...] Death and war repulse me. I became a Valkyrie not to fight, but to defend That being said, I will kill if need be, and I have, even if those were Stray Devils and other monsters who prey on the defenseless. But I do not allow myself to be steeped in death."
  • Friendly Address Privileges: Rias asks if it's okay to call Harry by his first name, which he agrees as long as he can call her Rias instead of "Princess Gremory" or anything similar, which she's more than agree on.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Odin often plays poker with other supernatural faction leaders (barring Michael).
  • Hair Memento: Played with: Sindri makes Harry another wand made of Yggdrasil wood with Rossweisse's hair as its core.
  • Has a Type: Rossweisse is interested in a guy who isn't intimidated by her intelligence and is very altruistic, while Harry likes his women confident and compassionate, both lampshading how they could fall in love with Issei and Rias respectively if they're still single.
  • Heartfelt Apology:
    • Dumbledore apologizes to Harry & Lily for handing Harry over to the Dursleys out of fear that the fame from being "The-Boy-Who-Lived" would bloat his ego.
    • Rossweisse apologizes to Harry for kissing him while she was drunk, which he forgives.
    • Odin saw Azrael grovel in front of Sirzechs for one of Fallen Angel cells stirring trouble in Kuoh in the latest poker night.
    • Rias apologizes to Issei that, because of her indecisiveness as an inexperienced head of territory, he was killed by Raynare when she could've intervened or recruited him before her, considering she's already aware that he has a dormant Sacred Gear at the time. Issei forgives her because not only does he return to life so he can pursue his dream of getting a Harem once more, but his lifespan is extended, letting him able to think of and pursue other dreams.
  • Hereditary Curse: according to Brynhildr, Rossweisse's low tolerance to alcohol stems from a curse her father received for rejecting a Danish witch's advances for already being married.
  • Hero of Another Story: Yes, Atreus the librarian is the same "son of Kratos" Atreus from God of War, who moved into High School D×D's world with Sindri centuries after God of War Ragnarök happened.
  • Heroic RRoD: After Brynhildr & Rossweisse assure Harry that he is safe, he passes out from exhaustion from his rampage in the graveyard.
  • Hidden Depths:
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: A spider Stray Demon shot its web string toward Harry as its first attack, only for him to grab the string, pull it towards him, and punch it with Weregild Lilja, burning its face.
  • Humiliation Conga: Invoked; Harry suggests purchasing Fred & George Weasley's joke products for the Rating Game, and Akeno chuckles at the possibility of defeating Riser with it.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Lily & Dumbledore argue that they do what they have done for Harry's safety (tuning her soul into Harry's Sacred Gear for Lily, handing him over to the Dursleys for Dumbledore) while proclaiming that the other's action ''is not justifiable''.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Rossweisse mentions how her grandmother was a famous Valkyrie, but her family isn't the wealthiest in Asgard.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Ravel Phenex is this for Harry, to his surprise, being too nervous to even ask for his autograph that Riser has to talk in her stead.
  • Informed Ability: Lampshaded; Rossweisse reminds Akeno that she is Rias' Queen, which gives her Bishop's magic mastery, Knight's speed, and Rook's toughness, yet she only fights like a Bishop with her lightning magic throughout the spar.
  • Insult Backfire: Subverted; Sindri's "The Reason You Suck" Speech merely confused Issei as to what even is "Onanism", at least until Koneko enlightened him. Even then, his reaction is less of "How could you accuse me doing that" and more "How dare you call me out".
  • Insecure Love Interest:
    • Harry & Rossweisse towards each other. The former sees himself as a broken, cursed man after everything that's happened to him recently, while the latter sees herself as unattractive due to being bullied by the other Valkyries for being too poor and nerdy to have a boyfriend.
    • Issei towards Rias. He thinks that she's leagues above her for not only he's just a Pawn to her King, she's from a noble family.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Harry learns of the prophecy about him from Dumbledore earlier than canon.
    • Harry & Rossweisse provided files about Rias and her peerages to give them some heads up on how to approach their training.
    • Issei learns about the existence of Ddraig in his Sacred Gear, its rivalry with Albion, and that he's fated to clash with whoever has Albion in their Sacred Gear earlier than canon from Rossweisse.
    • When Issei asks Harry how he's so good at cooking, he reveals his past with the Dursleys, to the shock of everyone (bar Rossweisse).
    • Issei mentions to Harry & Rossweisse how he feels inadequate to be Rias' equal in a possible future relationship as he is just a Pawn and she's his King and from a noble family, not to mention being traumatized from being killed by Raynare and reincarnated make him scared of making a commitment, which overheard by Rias.
  • Jerkass Realization: Issei admits that, before becoming a Devil, he was jealous of the attention Occult Research club gets from other students, especially Kiba who is popular with girls, but after learning about their past, he can't help but hate himself for even thought about them negatively.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his perverted behavior and calling Brynhildr & Rossweisse "uptight prudes", Odin tells the latter to be gentle in approaching Harry about his Sacred Gear and befriend him regardless because, despite everything, he is still a traumatized teen.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Rossweisse kisses Harry on the lips, twice — one suddenly and one with Harry's consent — while drunk from Butterbeer, after he mentions how he doesn't deserve a friend like her, to her shame when she sobered up the next morning.
  • Laughing at Your Own Jokes: Rossweisse drunkenly laughs from calling Sirius "Dogfather" due to him being Harry's godfather & a dog Animagus, to his bemusement. When he calls his mother a bitch, she laughs harder due to how apt that is to her insult.
  • Legacy Seeker: Ironically, Loki mind-controls Lily & Dumbledore to eventually have Lily give birth to Harry to fulfill a prophecy of Voldemort's defeat so he can expand his reputation more than just as a villain and "God of Trickster" by becoming the father of a hero.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • After practicing using it, it is revealed that Weregild Lilja only works if the target is a threat to Harry and only gets powerful if the target has malicious intent towards him because it works by turning said intent back to them.
    • Sindri notes from his research that The Phenex's immense regeneration is limited by their stamina, magic reserves, and mental acuity, meaning that inflicting immense pain on them could halt it.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Sindri reminds Kiba that his Sword Birth can create swords with any traits he can imagine. Hence, he could technically create a fire-absorbing sword or pain-inducing sword for fighting Riser.
  • Meaningful Echo:
    • When he notices that Rossweisse has been staying all day in the library to avoid Harry after accidentally kissing him while drunk, Atreus tells her of his father's past and later his own, of how there are times where he regrets some of the things he said and done to his father, and tells her what his father told him when he does those regretful acts: "Don't be sorry. Be better".
    • When teaching Asia Wizarding Magic, Harry quotes Mad-Eye Moody's "Constant Vigilance" to tell her the importance of situational awareness.
  • Mentor Archetype: Atreus is this for Rossweisse and later Harry.
  • Might Makes Right: Downplayed; Odin, being the powerful ruler of Asgard, can get away with things like smacking the butt of newly-fledged Valkyries, but that doesn't mean they didn't have precautions such as anti-pervert charm that stings anyone that tries to touch them inappropriately.
  • Morality-Guided Attack: Weregild Lilja injures those who have wronged Harry through physical contact, and the more evil deeds they have done, the more powerful and painful the damage is.
  • Mrs. Exposition:
    • Rossweisse is the one who does this for High School D×D - related topics to Harry.
    • Lily & Dumbledore tell Harry about some Awful Truth both he and the other half of the two didn't know about.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Harry has this reaction after massacring the Death Eater in his rampage, resulting in him barfing when recalling what happened.
    • Rossweisse has this reaction after recalling that she kissed Harry while drunk the night before.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Rias admitting that the Gremorys and the Sitris are not the norm among the Devils.
Harry: The way Riser acted, he reminded me way too much of a Malfoy. Ravel seemed all right, and if there's one good thing about Riser, it's the way he treated her. How many Devils act like that?
Rias: …Unfortunately, too many, even outside of the Old Satan Faction. My mother's family, the Baels, have pretty toxic family politics, and if you're born without the power of Destruction like my cousin Sairaorg was, well, you know how Squibs are treated in the wizarding world. [...] But for all of my parents' faults, they're nowhere near as bad as some of the nastier parts of the Bael family.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: Harry has trust issues from his adventures in Hogwarts, to the point of initially doubting Rossweisse's sincerity in helping him when they first met.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Sirius manages to get Rossweisse to drink Butterbeer by calling her a killjoy for going against drinking alcohol to celebrate her graduation.
  • Nobody's That Dumb: Brynhildr told the other Valkyries to guard the massacre site perimeter and to not touch any of the deceased's soul to Asgard while she and Rossweisse following a track, with one Valkyrie replied that they aren't stupid enough to ascend Death Eaters as an Einherjar.
  • Not So Stoic: After spending the day playing The Stoic mediator between Rias & Riser, Grayfia asks Harry for his autograph because her son loves fictionalized book series about him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Odin sees Harry as Loki's son as this, since the Frost Giant, while often missing, rarely interacts with the human world, therefore, there must be something that makes him think that this action is necessary.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: When Harry & Rossweisse announce their relationship, Sanngridr is still openly insulting the latter until she challenges her to a duel, which ends in Curb-Stomp Battle in Rossweisse's favor. Sanngridr has stopped her bullying & insults since.
  • Oh, Crap, There Are Fanfics of Us!: Harry learns from Grayfia that there is a series of books based on some fictionalized adventures about him before attending Hogwarts which is popular among the Devils, causing him to grimace, recalling that Hermione had mentioned it to him before.
  • Opposites Attract: Sirius and Brynhildr ended up together, with Harry noting in the narration that the relationship is "quite mercurial".
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Lily revealed that her cause of death was James commanded her to throw herself in front of Voldemort mid-casting Killing Curse, and she cannot resist his mind-control.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Harry massacres the Death Eaters, including Voldemort, at Tom Riddle's grave, instead of just defeating Voldemort and escaping like Canon.
    • Rossweisse has graduated into full-fledged Valkyrie and is tasked to guard Harry, preventing her canon fate of being stuck with Odin until he abandons her.
    • Pettigrew gets arrested in Azkaban, causing Sirius to be pardoned by the Ministry of Magic, which only happened post-mortem in canon.
    • In Canon, Rias and her peerage's first encounter with Rossweisse is when Odin asks the devils' help to find Loki alongside her and Baraqiel. Here, Odin sends her and Harry over to Kuoh to help them train against Riser Phenex and his peerage in the Rating Game.
    • It is stated that Riser does not have "sister complex" in this story.
    • Rossweisse's training & heart-to-heart talk let some characters learn or use their canonical skill earlier than canon, such as Koneko's Full-Contact Magic and Akeno's Holy Lightning.
    • While we haven't seen the ripple from this divergence, Rias learns of Issei's insecurities about his worth to her and his trauma from being killed by Raynare from overhearing him talking about it to Harry & Rossweisse.
    • Thanks to Harry & Rossweisse's training, Rias' peerage won the Rating Game against Riser's.
  • Polyamory: Defied; While Rossweisse mentions how such a relationship is acceptable in Supernatural World and that she's okay with it, Harry replies that he's satisfied with just her.
  • Possessing a Dead Body: From what Loki gloats to Dumbledore, the real James Potter was long dead, and he was possessing the man's body and pretending to be him since he was a baby.
  • Power Fist: Harry's Sacred Gear, Weregild Lilja, is a left-arm red & Gold gauntlet with a green gem in the back of the hand.
  • Prayer of Malice: Subverted; Harry almost mistakes Asia saying that she will be praying for his sake as this, before realizing that she's an All-Loving Heroine, therefore she genuinely wishes to help him.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: After Cho Chang dumped him for being a "dark magic undead", Cedric ended up dating Hermione after becoming an Einherjar.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Rossweisse explains that, due to their Viking origins, Asgard values brute force and materialism the most, with intelligence leaning more on cunningness over wisdom or scholarly studies, hence why not many people look at her achievements more than a glance.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Played straight with Sona, but downplayed for Rias, as she admits that her glasses do help her focus.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Rossweisse is raised by her grandmother, Gondül, due to how busy her parents are in Asgard.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Downplayed; Gondül, Rossweisse's grandmother, looks in her sixties, but she's old enough to have met Sigurd and the original Brynhildr.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Brynhildr, the leader and mentor of The Valkyries. She can be as work-focused as Rossweisse is, but she is certainly capable of reeling in her subordinates.
"I do not expect my other rookies to follow her work ethic completely, but they could stand to learn by her (Rossweisse's) example."
    • Amelia Bones, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and Rufus Scrimgeour are the few people in the Ministry of Magic who didn't outright believe Fudge's side of the story and sought Harry to learn of his side.
Amelia: If it's any consolation, the three of us personally believe in your innocence, and indeed, even Rufus had doubts about how guilty you were before we came here. However, Fudge and his cronies hold too much power for now.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • When Sindri retells about how much Leviathan Axe meant to him, Issei asks if its intended owner, Faye, is hot, causing the dwarf to cringe in disgust and give Rias' Pawn one.
"Excuse me, but you cannot describe someone as beautiful and strong and compassionate as Faye as anything as vulgar as 'hot'. Even my brother, brute though he was, respected her dignity. And given your attitude so far, I shudder to think of the state of your bedsheets from your…doubtlessly excessive onanism."
    • When Riser threatens to slaughter Rias' peerage and drag her back to The Underworld, Harry calls him out for being willing to stoop that low.
"I thought a Devil so important and prestigious would conduct himself with more dignity and decorum than threatening his fiancée's Peerage. *Sneers* Instead, you're acting little better than some Pureblood wizards I had the misfortune of knowing. Once they don't get their way, they resort to threats and violence. You're certainly nowhere near as noble as your namesake, the Phoenix bird."
  • Rebellious Princess: Downplayed; Rias asks Harry & Rossweisse how they handle their respective fame as she grew tired of people only seeing her as the Gremory princess, with her peerages being the exception, and even then she second-guessed if it is because she's their king, making her wish she could make friends who can look past her nobility status, something the two and Issei more than willing to be for her.
  • Related in the Adaptation: By the nature of Composite Character, Harry is Loki's son in this fic.
  • Retired Badass: Atreus moves out from his world to High School D×D's Asgard for some quiet life alongside Sindri after God of War Ragnarök, but that doesn't mean he forgot how to kick some butt nor chooses to stand by when someone is wronged.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Everyone praises Issei for managing to cast a spell on his own by making a potato's skin explode before revealing that he discovered it by visualizing the potato as a girl and its skin as their clothes. Harry eventually concedes that armor does count as clothes and since Riser's peerages are mostly females, it could work as a Defeat by Modesty tactic, while Rossweisse asks him to develop the spell further so he could eventually strip non-Sacred Gear weapons as well.
  • Sarcastic Devotee: While Rossweisse is less open about it compared to Brynhildr, the two Valkyries do see Odin as a pervert and often call him out of his antics.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Sanngridr Initially manages to escape her latrine duty punishment because her family, a well-renowned one in Asgard, manages to talk to the Valkyrie supervising her to rescind the duty. However, Brynhildr eventually found out and gave them some stern discipline.
  • Scientifically Understandable Sorcery:
    • Rossweisse explains that ice magic, in general, is hard to master because it actively goes against the Second Law of Thermodynamics Which is... to an extent, so those who master it are often lauded, such as Serafall Leviathan.
    • Fire magic still works under the rules of combustion, as in it requires oxygen, heat source, and fuel, even if the last two can be provided with mana. so, to defeat Riser, Rossweisse invents a spell that creates a localized vacuum area to prevent his fire magic from working.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Rossweisse mentions to Rias that if she learns of her Arranged Marriage outside Odin's mission, she would still help her anyway.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Loki learns of a prophecy from the Norns that Lily will kill him if he keeps masquerading as James Potter, so he wipes their memories of it before ordering Lily to take Voldemort's Killing Curse head-on with his Mind Control, unaware that she has conducted a ritual that let her soul merged with Harry's to be his Sacred Gear, and her death freed her from his mind control with her memory intact, giving her the motivation to find and kill him even before learning that he's Loki.
  • Self-Made Woman: Rossweisse firmly believes in hard work and diligence and would rather not use her grandmother's reputation to achieve success.
  • Setting Update: In Canon, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire event is set in mid-1995. Here, it is set in mid-2006 to fit the High School D×D timeline, as lampshaded by Harry mentioning how Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes has an online store.
  • Shed the Family Name: Lily retook her maiden surname of Evans after awakening from her slumber to distance herself from James.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Harry explains to Rossweisse that Hermione is not his girlfriend, but more of a "bossy sister".
  • Shipper on Deck: Lily supports Harry & Rossweisse because she thinks the two are cute together and how fast they are in becoming friends in just a week
  • Shout-Out:
    • Rossweisse mentions how her father was a fan of Richard Wagner and named her after a character in The Ring of the Nibelung. She was often teased about it to the point where she hates Ride of the Valkyries.
    • Rossweisse uses the TARDIS from Doctor Who as a concept to explain how the connection between the World Tree's Nine Realm works.
    • Atreus resembles Vincent van Gogh played by Tony Curran in Doctor Who's episode, Vincent and the Doctor.
    • Rossweisse references Dragon Ball's Hyperbolic Time Chamber as the comparison for her Rune-based time bubble magic.
    • Koneko mentions that she watches enough MythBusters to understand combustion stoichiometry.
    • When discussing Explosive Decompression, Rossweisse mentions how the death of Milton Krest in Licence to Kill is a surprisingly realistic example of the trope.
  • Shower of Angst: Harry is having one after Odin visits him, pondering upon the brutality of his massacre, comparing it to the other times he did kill or intended to kill someone (Quirrel, Diary!Tom Marvollo Riddle, and Sirius back when he only knew him as "the one who sell out his parent to Voldemort").
  • Smarter Than You Look: Issei manages to follow through with Rossweisse's explanation for Rias' new spell because he understands the Laws of Thermodynamics, to everyone's surprise.
"Actually, I know this one from physics class. The Laws of Thermodynamics say that heat must flow to cold, and that disorder, entropy, always increases overall. Even if you're tidying a room, your effort to do so basically turns the fuel in your body into heat that is basically disorder. *Realized at being stared at* What? I actually pay attention in classes, believe it or not!"
  • Something Only They Would Say: When Harry expresses doubt that the Lily whose soul resides in Weregild Lilja is actually his mother, Lily tells him of the time she punished Sirius for peeping in the girl's shower room by making him & James drink a gender-changing potion, which the dog Animagus later embarrassedly confirms.
  • So Proud of You: Lily tells Harry that, while she hates James and what he has done to her, she is proud that Harry has grown into a fine young man.
  • Soul Jar: As it turns out, Weregild Lilja is made of Lily's soul from a ritual she enacted before her death to let her possess it. She can talk to others within the Sacred Gear and show herself in a ghost-like image in his dreams.
  • Stress Vomit: Harry has one when he gets glimpses of the massacre he has done in his berserk state.
  • Suggestive Collision: Harry & Rossweisse end up getting this when the latter tries to enter the former's room to apologize.
  • Talking in Your Dreams: Harry first meets Lily's soul in his dreams, which she can use to meet with him personally.
  • Teen Genius: Rossweisse is 15 years old at the time Harry meets her, but she already making a dissertation on Sealing Magic.
  • Time Dilation: Rossweisse creates a set of Runes that, when applied to an area, creates a time bubble within its radius. This lets Rias and her peerage trains for a month in 10 days, with the caveat that Wi-Fi signals cannot go through it.
  • Time Skip: The story skips from Harry adapting to live in Asgard to him & Rossweisse sharing a living space in a few years.
  • Title Drop: When Rossweisse wonders if she deserves Harry as a lover, Atreus mentions to her that Valkyrie is often called Óskmey, meaning "Wish-Maiden", from how they grant the desires of the deceased to go to Valhalla, but that doesn't mean they have to neglect their own desires.
  • To the Pain: Harry wonders if Lily is okay after they learn that James Potter is actually Loki, only to mentally overhear her making a list of how she would torture him if they ever meet again. This causes Harry to back off and tell Rossweisse not to ask when she notices how startled he is.
…Will shove a shillelagh covered in tabasco where only colorectal surgeons dare to tread, sideways. And as for Day 11, well, for starters, I'm going to take a rusty pair of scissors, and use it to cut Loki's…
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Harry awakens his Jotunn blood magic and his Sacred Gear as he watches Pettigrew kill Cedric with the Killing Curse and repeatedly take Voldemort's Cruciatus Curse after losing the duel against him.
  • True Companions: Harry tells Issei, after telling him how he got killed by Raynare, that there is nothing wrong in finding a girlfriend, but he could focus on making friends, especially since the Occult Research Club already sees him as one of theirs.
  • Truer to the Text: Unlike most High School D×D fanfiction that refers to the Anime adaptation, Riser Phenex is shown to behave like the Light Novel version more, being respectful and cordial with Harry & Rossweisse and equally doting to his sister by teasing how much of Harry's fan Ravel is while letting her asking for the Wizard's autograph.
  • Undercover as Lovers: Downplayed; While Rossweisse & Harry are already in a relationship at this point, Odin tells them that their cover identity while being in Kuoh is as the teacher of Kuoh Academy and her assistant & fiancee.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Rossweisse explains to Harry that his rampage at Tom Riddle's grave is because his newly awakened Jotunn power hasn't integrated well with his wizarding magic.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Dumbledore unknowingly weakens Harry's Sacred Gear by using its energy to power the Blood Wards, causing him to endure years of abuse from the Dursleys when Lily could've been awake and use Weregild Lilja to protect Harry from them.
  • Villain Respect: Riser, to everyone's surprise, agrees with Harry's "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
"*Laughs* You've got guts, I will give you that, Harry Potter. My sister follows your exploits, but I had wondered what she saw in you. I guess I see it now. Still, as ignorant and as unwarranted as your words are, comparing me to those inbred mortals (Wizarding World), you do have a point. I should conduct myself with the decorum befitting my station. And besides, it would not do to upset the Strongest Queen, or the others in Lord Lucifer's Peerage for that matter."
  • Violence Is Disturbing: Considering the kinds of injuries that would be caused by her localized vacuum bubble spell concept, Rossweisse asks to The Occult Research Club about their experience with violent death, which they answer in various levels, with Kiba, being a lab experiment Sole Survivor, being the worst, before she tells them hers.
Rossweisse: My first time was at a train crash near Oslo. We were brought in for disaster relief as it involved many Norwegian magicals, and our trainee squad happened to be nearby, so we posed as volunteers at the request of the Ministry of Magic for Norway. It was…horrifying. They make death so neat and tidy in films and television, most of the time. But that train crash destroyed a lot of my illusions.
  • Vomiting Cop: Two of the newer Valkyries are vomiting after seeing the graveyard massacre site.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: Discussed; Harry asks Rossweisse if Cedric can be ascended as an Einherjar. Not only there's a large chance of failure because Einherjar can only ascend from those who died in battle while Cedric died in an ambush, but Rossweisse says that even if his parents and girlfriend welcome him back, the rest of Magical Britain might not from the fact he is a living dead to them. It was later revealed that it was moderately Worth It; while it was successful and The Diggorys happily embraced their resurrected son, Cho Chang can't see past Wizarding World's stigma of "any magic involved with the dead is Dark Magic" and dumped him as a result.
  • Welcome to My World: Harry chuckles when Issei mentions how he's taking the training seriously because he is destined to fight a fellow Dragon-possessed Sacred Gear wielder.
Harry: Welcome to the club. I mean, "Welcome to the 'Arseholes Gunning For You Because Destiny Says So' club. That's 10 quid for the cover charge."
    Everyone: *Snickers*
Issei: C'mon, man, that ain't funny!
Harry: Not really, not when you're the one suffering from it. Anyway, at least if you're lucky, whoever Albion's host is might be reasonable. Voldemort was a deranged magical Nazi with a grudge against me.
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Discussed; Issei, who is very new to the Supernatural world, is surprised how human-like Devils can be, with Harry & Rossweisse agree with him, stating that they believe humanity is more than just a race and that humans can be both more horrible than monsters and paragons of good.
Rias: Of course, keep in mind, we are Devils, creatures born of sin. We tend to be more predisposed to it, and to hedonism, and to the darker elements of what you'd consider human psychology in humans.
Harry: Look, one of my first friends was half-Giant, my teachers included a werewolf, a ghost, and a part-Goblin, Rossweisse is a Vanir and a Valkyrie, Sindri's a Dwarf, and I'm on speaking terms with a few Norse gods. And that's without going into my own lineage. I think what defines a person is pretty flexible. As long as you're a good person, I don't care what you really are. And so far, you and your Peerage seem to be good people, Rias, my disquiet about how you recruited them aside.
Rias: That's fair. [...] Still, it's heartening to hear your perspective. Devils arouse suspicion at best from many, and with good reason, but there are other beings who are treated poorly by humans with far less reason. All for the supposed crime of being different.
Harry: ...I guess xenophobia is everywhere.
Rias: Unfortunately, xenophobia is universal. Humans are not unique in that. It doesn't make it right.
  • Working Out Their Emotions: Rossweisse usually vents her frustration by decimating the dummies in the training hall, and offering Harry to train his new powers and sort out his emotions from the Awful Truth he learns of by doing the same.
  • Worth It: Lily tells Dumbledore that enacting a soul magic that turns her into Sacred Gear in Harry's soul is worth doing if it means she can keep Harry safe.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • Rossweisse is disappointed in herself that Sanngridr may have a point, that she is incapable of standing up for herself, and that her intelligence and combat skills aren't worth much to a Valkyrie if she can't use Seiz-style magic and get an Einherjar. Both Atreus & Harry assure her that she is leagues better than those Einherjar & party-obsessed Valkyries.
Atreus: You handle yourself far better than many of those jokes who call themselves Valkyries. My father lectured me at length about my temper. Besides, if all they fill their lives with is partying and trying to get boyfriends instead of…well, being dedicated to their work…
      [...]
Harry: Rossweisse, you've been genuinely nice to me as far as I can tell. I mean, at times, you could lighten up a little, but honestly, I'm used to that sort of thing with Hermione. And I'd rather be with a girl with a big brain and a bigger heart than some tart who has neither.
    • Rossweisse tries to play it humble when people compliment her time bubble spell invention, stating that she's merely doing what Thomas Edison does with tech; improving and adapting existing spells. But Harry assures her that making an original Runic spell is a big deal, not to mention that she's much kinder than the inventor.
    • Harry mentions how his life is in tatters after the massacre and being labeled fugitive by Magical Britain, in which Rias reminds her that his True Companions from Magical Britain didn't abandon him and that he's still well-adjusted.
    • Rias hopes that Harry & Rossweisse can befriend her as Rias, not merely a Gremory princess. The two plus Issei tells her that she has more than earned it.
Issei: Rias, don't talk like that. I'm sure you could!
Harry: *Nods* While I do have a few issues with what you've done before, honestly, you leave many of the Purebloods back home for dead when it comes to being affable.
Rossweisse: And you are more pleasant than most of my peers, Rias. I don't see any major obstacles to us becoming friends. Harry and I are here not to help out Heiress Gremory, but Rias.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: Subverted; Harry says this slowly to explain that, while the Death Eater's death is on him, Cedric's is not, which the two Valkyries believe since they can tell that the Hufflepuff was killed by the Killing Curse.
  • You Remind Me of X:
    • Harry notes how similar Rossweisse is to Hermione; A kind, studious girl with no-name background for their respective setting that could be too strict for their own good.
    • Meanwhile, Sanngridr, and later Riser, reminds Harry of Draco Malfoy; an arrogant rich bully who uses their status and wealth to do whatever they want.
  • Your Mom: Rossweisse drunkenly says this when Sirius flabbergastedly wonders who could even get drunk from a Butterbeer. He hates his mother enough to let it slide.
