Blue Moon Rising is a Trollhunters fanfic by Uncreativefanficwritername.

In a twist of fate, James Lake Junior disappeared mere days after his tenth birthday. His body was never found. Five years later, Atlas is a normal teenage boy, who just happens to work for a murderous secretive organization of shape-changing trolls. It's not so bad though. The healthcare is free at least. Until he finds a magical amulet. This must be some sort of mistake. Atlas can't be the Trollhunter. Merlin was insane. He worked for the Janus Order for Pale Lady's sake. What was that stupid wizard thinking? Suffice to say, things get...interesting.

The fanfic can be found on: Archive of Our Own and Fanfic.net.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Stricklander.
  • Alternate Universe: Jim is kidnapped as a young child by human scientists then raised by Stricklander at the Janus Order. He is later named Atlas on account of his amnesia.
  • Anti-Hero: Atlas starts out as an asshole but slowly becomes a better hero as the story goes on. Initially, he is very standoffish with the group, but grows to appreciate and work with them as the story goes on.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Atlas views and calls Stricklander dad early on in the story. As the Trollhunter, he is terrified of his father finding out his secret human identity.
  • Bromance: Atlas and Toby.
  • Child Soldiers: Atlas is essentially a child soldier in a cult.
  • Crush Blush: Atlas and Claire's initially meeting has him stuttering. Their interactions at school and later during a study session are quite adorable.
  • Dangerous 16th Birthday: Follows similarly to the Episode Bittersweet Sixteen. Unlike the show however, Atlas is not in the Daylight Armor and actually gets electrocuted.
  • Dark Fic: This story is a lot more pg-13 than the show and handles more mature themes about abuse.
  • Fantastic Racism: Trolls discriminate against Changelings. This ends up as a major issue for Atlas later on.
Stricklander: And what did you think would happen? You would kill Bular and get rid of the Bridge and all would be well? That trolls would welcome us back in open arms? That somehow we would give up on returning Gunmar to his throne? That you could have your cake and eat it too? Wake up, boy. This is the real world. Trolls have been killing us for centuries. Do you think they’ll stop because their Trollhunter is one?
Atlas: I wanted to help our people.
Stricklander: But you didn’t. Instead, you betrayed us. You betrayed me. Do you know the kind of humiliation I will suffer? Have suffered? Time and time again I have protected you, stood up for you against your staunchest opponents, because I believed in you. What do you have to say for yourself?
    Atlas: They were right.
    Stricklander: What?
Atlas: I kept thinking we could rule ourselves, that we could be together, as people, but I was wrong. None of you want to get better. None of you want to cross that bridge. We’re not good enough for that. Vendel and the others were right. Changelings can’t change.
Stricklander: We are about to change the world, Young Atlas. With, or without you.
Atlas: There’s more to this world than us.
Stricklander: And yet, the world doesn’t give a damn about us changelings. Your logic is faulty. It seems your time as Trollhunter has gone to your head.
Atlas: Gone to my head? It opened my eyes, showed me what ''really'' mattered.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: Toby makes up a lie that Atlas is a foreign student from Canada. They go even further and make him a school record.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Atlas is half-human, half-changeling.
  • Identity Amnesia: Atlas does not remember much his life before being kidnapped by human scientists. His name was given to him by Stricklander. Ever since he found the amulet, however, he begins to receive "bits and pieces" of flashbacks of his past life, before and during his captivity with human scientists.
  • I Have No Son!: After Blinky reveals to Stricklander that Atlas is the Trollhunter, and identifies Stricklander as Atlas' father. "I am not that traitor's father. Not anymore. He has lost that privilege."
  • It's All About Me: A minor one for Stricklander. He often tries to force Atlas not to call him "father" around the Order as it would make him look "weak."
  • Loss of Identity: Atlas struggles with his identity, first from his memory issues and later as he spends more and more time as Jim Lake Jr. He is afraid of losing himself in the identity he has taken on, even if it was his previous life. After defecting the changelings and defeating Bular, he chooses to renounce his identity as Atlas and wishes to rediscover and relive his old life as Jim Lake Jr.
  • Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans: There are a lot of easter eggs and references to things in the story.
  • Parental Neglect: On Atlas's 16th birthday, he wished he could spend some time with Stricklander and develop their father-son bond. After he kills the Stalkling, Atlas waits for Stricklander at the view point so they can celebrate his birthday alone together. However, Strickler does not bother to come because he was "too busy," which creates a rift between the two and Atlas begins to believe that he's not as important to him as he first thought. He expresses his distaste for his "father" not wanting to look weak to the Janus Order.
Atlas: (to Blinky) And do you know what his excuse was? I’m busy. Not, "Oh, I have too much homework to grade," or "The goblins got out and we have to go find them." Not a single reason.
    • After Stricklander discovers that Atlas and Jim are the same person, Atlas then realized that Stricklander perhaps knew how horrible the Janus Order was treating him, but never bothered to care for him, possibly due to his own goal of trying not to make himself look "weak" despite actually seeing Atlas as his former son. When he denies this accusation, how Atlas responds sounds like he isn't fooled.
Stricklander: Bular is an ends to a means. It is Gunmar who truly matters. Why didn’t you just ignore him? All you had to do was keep your head down and say nothing, but you continued to egg him on.
Atlas: Egg him on? Is that what you call abuse?
Stricklander: This isn’t a schoolyard, Atlas.
Atlas: No, it’s not is it? You ''knew'', didn’t you?
      Stricklander: Know what?
Atlas: What the other changelings were doing to me?
Stricklander: I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.
Atlas: Did you really think all my scars are from Bular and my training sessions?
Stricklander: What are you trying to say?
Atlas: Changelings didn’t hide their distaste with me. Why do you think I sleep with a dagger underneath my pillow?
Stricklander: You’re lying. None of my agents would do that. They are loyal to me.
Atlas: Why is it so hard for you to believe your own brethren don’t give a rats ass about your rules? Why can’t you just believe what I’m telling you?
Stricklander: Because you lied to me! How can I trust what you say now after you kept this from me, from all of us?
Atlas: Because I knew you would react like this!
  • Secret Identity: Jim has multiple identities that he must conceal. He is Atlas at the Janus Order, the Trollhunter in Trollmarket, and Jim Lake Jr. at school. He later abandons his Altas identity and tries to regain his life as Jim Lake Jr.
  • That Man Is Dead: After defeating Bular at the bridge, Jim renounces his identity as Atlas, becoming Jim Lake again.
  • What If?? : What if Redo of canon where Jim was a changeling.
