"I was swabbing a patient's head with iodine before operating but trying to look professional, I was being rather too generous and the solution trickled down into the actor’s eyes, unable to see."

Peter Birch, (31 August 1952 — 13 September 2017), was a British actor best known for playing Jack Hathaway in CASUAL+Y.

His acting training came at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Birch's first TV role came in a 1977 episode of Secret Army. In the early '80s, Birch had recurring roles in the first series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and the second series of By The Sword Divided, playing Herr Ulrich in the former and the second Lord Edward in the latter.

He played Arthur Eliott in the first series of The House of Eliott in 1991. The rest of The '90s had small roles for Birch until 1996 when he was cast as Jack Hathaway in Casualty. After he left the series, he only acted one more time, in a 2001 episode of Stanton Blues.

He died of esophageal cancer at the age of 65.
