    The Crew as a whole
  • Badass Adorable: All of them (except for Gongon) are cheery, bright-eyed monkeys that are capable of incredible feats.
  • Badass Crew: Seriously, these four monkeys can also kick butt even when they're rolling inside their ball.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: With the original four in cutscenes AiAi is red, MeeMee is blue, Baby is yellow, and GonGon is green. Though some of these colors would swap around as more characters were added.
  • Couple Theme Naming: Both AiAi and his future wife MeeMee have names that can refer to one's self ("I" for AiAi, "Me" for MeeMee).
  • Pale Females, Dark Males: In their original designs MeeMee is has lighter fur than all the males except for Baby.

Eek eek! You finished without making a mistake! Try a harder level!
Voiced by: Kaoru Morota (2001-2006), Noriko Hidaka (Banana Mania)

AiAi is the main character of the series.

  • Badass Adorable: As usual, he can save the world by beating Dr. Bad Boon in Super Monkey Ball 2.
  • Chick Magnet: MeeMee and YanYan both love him.
  • The Hero: No kidding. He is this alongside MeeMee, Baby and GonGon.
  • Implacable Man: Nothing will stop him from hunting down Bad-Boon.
  • Jack of All Stats: AiAi defaults to this in all the games in the series (Except for Super Monkey Ball 3D).
  • The Leader: Of the Monkey Ball crew, also described as their strategist.
  • Magnetic Hero: AiAi is nice, caring, loyal, and friendly. He never holds a grudge on his former enemy Gongon and is willing to forgive him.
  • Nice Guy: He's ultimately one of the nicest characters in the Super Monkey Ball series. AiAi is known for his compassion and kindness.
  • Red Is Heroic: As the main Monkey and leader of the crew he naturally gets the red ball in cutscenes.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: AiAi defaults to both:
    • The Manly Man to Baby's Sensitive Guy.
    • The Sensitive Guy to GonGon's Manly Man.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bananas.

    Meemee

Voiced by: Konami Yoshida (2001-2006), Noriko Hidaka (Banana Mania)

MeeMee is one of the main characters in Super Monkey Ball and she's the future wife of AiAi.

  • Action Girl: She's a girl monkey who can roll inside a ball like AiAi, Baby and GonGon.
  • Badass Adorable: She's also capable of saving the world and tackling all problems.
  • Dude Magnet: She loves AiAi and he also loves her too. Dr. BadBoon also loves MeeMee as well, but she keeps rejecting him. Fans thought that GonGon has a crush on her.
  • Jack of All Stats: Plays simiilarly to AiAi but with slightly less weight for slightly more agility, just not to the extreme of Baby.
  • Little Miss Badass: She can even kick butt when rolling inside a ball.
  • Nice Girl: MeeMee is by far one of the nicest monkeys you'll ever meet. She's also described as the charm of the Super Monkey Ball Team.
  • Official Couple: Banana Blitz established that she would eventually marry AiAi. Banana Mania's bio's suggest that the two already are husband and wife.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Considering that she wears pink. She also gets a pink version of AiAi's car in spinoffs.
  • Plucky Girl: She also has no problem to shy away from a challenge.
  • The Reliable One: Described as being more practical and serious than AiAi. She's also the only one that can calm Baby down.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only female monkey in the Super Monkey Ball team before YanYan came along.

    Baby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/babysmb3d2.png
Voiced by: Rio Natsuki (2001-2006), Noriko Hidaka (Banana Mania)

Baby is one of the main characters in the series and is the future son of AiAi and MeeMee.

  • Cheerful Child: He easily gets excited. He's usually seen as this when he's happy.
  • Children Are Innocent: In the games, he's described as the innocent one.
  • The Cutie: The youngest and the most cutest of the Super Monkey Ball Team.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: His early game appearances have him white fur and no bib. The Binky was the same color though.
  • Fragile Speedster: The smallest and lightest, but has the best acceleration, turning and jumping abilities.
  • Kid from the Future: Believe it or not, he's actually AiAi and MeeMee's future son, who traveled back in time to make sure they hook up. Banana Mania may or may not have retconned this as the bios suggest that AiAi and MeeMee are already married.
  • One-Way Visor: His redesign from Banana Blitz adds this, to reinforce that he's the Kid from the Future.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to AiAi's Manly Man.
  • The Smart Guy: Described as being hyper intelligent because he comes from the future. He can also pilot a robot suit.
  • Tagalong Kid: He's the child of AiAi and MeeMee and the youngest by far of the team.

    Gongon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gongon.png
Voiced by: Patrick Harlan (2001-2006), Kōichi Yamadera (Banana Mania)

Gongon is one of the main characters in Super Monkey Ball. He was once AiAi rival and now AiAi friend. He is the strongest monkey of the group.

  • The Ace: He seems to be good at every Party Game like Monkey Bowling.
  • Badass Boast: He appears to be the strongest of the Super Monkey Ball Team.
  • Best Friend: After burying the hatchet, he and AiAi became inseparable.
  • The Big Guy: He's the biggest and toughest of the team.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Despite him being the strongest, he's shown to actually care for his friends.
  • Butt-Monkey: In the first Super Monkey Ball, that is, especially in the endings. It wouldn't be under Monkey Ball 2 where the ape got the same level of attention as the other three.
  • Gentle Giant: He might act tough at times, but GonGon is a really friendly guy with a gentle and loving heart.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He was AiAi's arch-rival in the first Super Monkey Ball, but becomes a part of his team in the later games.
  • Mighty Glacier: He's typically the largest, heaviest, and fastest once he gets going, but has the weakest turn, jump, and acceleration.
  • Only Sane Man: Despite his muscular personality, it's clear that Gongon defaults to this since he can be seen as the sanest of the Super Monkey Ball Team.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: In his first major redesign his red shirt was changed to pink.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to AiAi Sensitive Guy.

    YanYan
Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka (Banana Mania)

YanYan is a female, ring tailed lemur introduced in Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz.

  • Action Girl: She's fearless, tough, and said to be a master of monkey martial arts.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's the Veronica to MeeMee's Betty in competing for AiAi's affections.
  • Love Triangle: She was introduced as a romantic rival to MeeMee for AiAi's affections. Unfortunately for her, the same game that introduced her also established that AiAi and MeeMee would become an Official Couple. Though YanYan doesn't seem to harbor any ill will towards either.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Tomboy to MeeMee's Girly Girl.
  • Token Minority: She is the only member of the main cast not to be a monkey, but rather a lemur.

    Doctor
Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (Banana Mania)

Doctor was added to the main cast in Banana Blitz along with YanYan.

  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He doesn't even rememeber what his real name is so everyone calls him Doctor due to his intelligence.
  • Good Counterpart: To Dr. Bad-Boon seeing as they are both monkey scientists.
  • Identity Amnesia: He doesn't remember his past or even his name, but appears to have great skill and intuition with inventions.

    Dr. Bad-Boon

Voiced by: Patrick Harlan (2001-2006), Kōichi Yamadera (Banana Mania)

Dr. Bad-Boon (real name, Hihi) is the archnemesis of AiAi and friends and is the one trying to steal MeeMee's heart.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: MeeMee isn't pleased with his advances, to say the least.
  • Arch-Enemy: AiAi, both for foiling his schemes and for being the one MeeMee actually loves. It goes to the point where he tries constructing AiAi robots to steal more bananas for him, hoping the real deal takes the blame.
  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of Super Monkey Ball 2 and Banana Mania.
  • Evil Genius: He's an evil scientist that uses his inventions and technology to try and get his way such as a machine to suck up all the bananas to put in his labyrinths.
  • Evil Is Petty: In his original appearance, he wanted to take Jungle Island's bananas for no other reason than because he could, but his plans increasingly become more self centered and spiteful. He creates a robot army of AiAi lookalikes to frame him for the theft of more bananas, and in the finale attempts to use a space laser to make everyone in the world taste curry when they eat bananas so he could have them all to himself.
  • Evil Laugh: "Hee hee hee!" His actual in-game laugh is closer to a high pitched cackle.
  • Expy: He's a villainous monkey genius similar to Mojo Jojo.
  • If I Can't Have You…: Inverted. When MeeMee first rejects him, he decides to destroy her home island by blowing up the volcano. Upon further rejection, he threatens to eat the other monkeys.
  • Jerkass: He's stuck-up, uncaring, selfish, creepy, and an all-around unpleasant guy.
  • Lean and Mean: Where the rest of the monkeys are short and round in the gut, Dr. Bad-Boon is the tallest and skinniest of the simians in the story, but also the most cruel.
  • Punny Name: Dr. Bad-Boon, as in a bad baboon.
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: At one point, he attempts to cook the shrunken monkeys into a stew.
  • Shrink Ray: He shoots the monkeys with one when confronted at his amusement park lair. He tries to cook and eat them afterwards, but loses track of where they went.
  • Stalker with a Crush: For MeeMee, to the point where he's willing to travel back in time to get his way.
  • Supervillain Lair: He has four main hideouts that he goes through over the course of the game: an airship, an amusement park's haunted house, a clockwork factory, and finally a space station armed with a laser cannon.
  • Swapped Roles: In Banana Mania, Aiai's the one who sees the whale coming and panics while Bad Boon is unaware until it's too late, rather than the other way around like in 2.
  • Villainous Crush: He's in love with MeeMee, but in the future she marries AiAi.
  • Yandere: His love for MeeMee comes off as creepy and he's willing to murder AiAi, Baby and Gongon just so he can have her all to himself.

    Henchman

The assistant to Dr. Bad-Boon who never speaks, but helps out with Dr. Bad-Boon's plans.

  • Canon Name: Until Banana Mania, he was nameless (simply going by "Dr. Bad-Boon's assistant"), but he is now known as Henchman.
  • The Igor: He is Dr. Bad-Boon's personal assistant, and has some tell-tale characteristics of an Igor with his hunchback and thicker build.
  • Flat Character: He has no name, never speaks, and has very little character.
  • The Voiceless: Never says a single line.
