In General
An Always Female race of magical beings who live in a world parallel to the human world. An age-old curse transforms any Witch into a Witch Frog when said Witch is called "Witch" by a human.
- Always Female: The males, the Wizards, live in their own separate world.
- Amazing Technicolor Population: Downplayed. Only their hair is of various colors.
- Bewitched Amphibians: What they are turned into after the aforementioned Forced Transformation. There are enough of them at the start to have their own village.
- Forced Transformation: What happens to them if a human ever calls one a "Witch".
- Flying Broomstick: Those that haven't been cursed ride these.
- Mystical White Hair: All of them have magic, but only some of them have white hair.
- Pointed Ears: The vast majority of them.
- Really 700 Years Old: A lot of them have mentioned being several centuries old, and several of them are able to prove it too.
Majo Rika (Patina)
Voiced by: Naomi Nagasawa (Japanese), Lisa Ortiz (English), Guadalupe Noel (Latin-American Spanish), Rosa Vivas (European Spanish)
A witch who owns and unsuccessfully manages the Maho-dou. She was caught by Doremi and, as a result, she was cursed and transformed into a magic frog-like creature.
- Accentuate the Negative: Majo Rika prefers to yell at the girls for what they did wrong, as opposed to praising them for anything done right, which she considers to be how they should do things by default.
- Balloon Belly: After eating all the cakes that the girls conjured via Magical Stage for Kayoko to persuade the latter to stop dieting.
- Bewitched Amphibians: When Doremi discovers her.
- Butt-Monkey
- Catchphrase: "You idiot!"
- Deadpan Snarker: She is constantly making sarcastic remarks, especially towards the girls.
- Dub Name Change: "Patina" in the 4Kids dub. In the Latin American dub, some episodes call her "Mallorca". In the Italian dub, her name is "Eufonia" as a witch and "Raganella" as a frog.
- Flat "What": Her response to Doremi's "Pretty Witchy Doremi-Chi!"Majo Rika: What...the hell...was that?!
- Fair-Weather Mentor
- Forced Transformation: Suffers this when Doremi discovers her at the beginning of the series.
- Greed: She's rather fond of money and the "Golden Poop" from Pao.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: She flies off the handle over pretty much everything.
- Image Song: "Majorika Bravo!!"
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She may be loud and rude, but she does genuinely care for the girls.
- Large Ham: Things that would only mildly irritate most other people infuriate her.
- Mentor Mascot: Sorta acts as this to the Ojamajos, though she's more of a mentor than a mascot.
- Mooching Master: The whole reason she is training Doremi and the others as witch apprentices is so that, when they finally become witches, they can transform her back into her humanoid form.
- No Indoor Voice: She is always shouting at the Ojamajos.
- Pointy Ears: In her human form.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Lala's blue.
- Sibling Rivalry: With her twin sister, Majo Ruka!
- Sink or Swim Mentor: She has no patience for anyone and does not suffer fools gladly...even if they are eight-year-old girls new to the whole witch apprentice thing.
- Team Mom: Admits to the girls in the last episode of the first season that she views them as like daughters.
- Theme Naming: She and her sister Majoruka are named after the Japanese cosmetics brand Majolica Majorca.
Lala (Laralie)
Voiced by: Megumi Takamura (Japanese), Andi Whaley (English), Irma Carmona (Latin-American Spanish), Carmen Podio (European Spanish)
Majo Rika's fully grown fairy.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed. She's not exactly horrible, but like Majo Rika, has a greedy side (it's just that she's better at hiding it than her owner is).
- Dub Name Change: Laralie in the 4Kids dub.
- Gold and White Are Divine
- Meaningful Name: Her name comes from the music note "La".
- Older Than They Look: Lala is around the same age as Hehe, if not older.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Majo Rika's red, as Lala plays The Lancer to her. However, there are times when they're similar; it's just that Lala's better at hiding her Greed and temper than Majo Rika is.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Takes the form of a white cat in public.
Majo Ruka (Patunia)
Voiced by: Mayumi Shou (Japanese), Caren Lyn Manual-Tackett (English), RocÃo Azofra (European Spanish)
Majo Rika's rival. When she came to own the Mahou-Dou, she sold cursed trinkets that eventually harmed whoever had them. She was caught by Onpu and cursed just like Majo Rika.
- Bad Boss: Her treatment of Hehe has prompted the fairy to mess things up for her.
- Bad Luck Charm: The charms she sold granted good fortune at first while causing severe ailments. Played straight when she sold one to Doremi after seeing through her Paper-Thin Disguise.
- Bewitched Amphibians: when Onpu discovers her.
- Blackmail: Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko use this to force her to let them into Majo Kai to take an extra credit test.
- Disc-One Final Boss: Served as the primary antagonist while she controlled the shop. Once she was defeated and the shop returned to Majo Rika's possession, she left in disgust. She returned later but as Onpu's Evil Mentor.
- Evil Counterpart: To Majo Rika. To go into detail, they're both greedy and have a short temper, but while Majo Rika is a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, Majo Ruka is shown to have a Lack of Empathy, is twice as greedy as Majo Rika, and is willing to hurt others just to get what she wants.
- Evil Mentor: To Onpu.
- Evil Twin: She's actually Majo Rika's twin sister!
- Forced Transformation: Suffered this when Onpu discovered her.
- Heel–Face Turn: Eventually becomes drinking buddies with Majo Rika.
- Honest John's Dealership: The magic items she sold while she was in control of the Mahou-Dou worked better than the items made by the girls but had serious side effects. Eventually came back to bite her in the ass.
- I Lied: Promised to remove the cursed effects of the charms she sold after losing to the girls so long as they return her Crystal Ball (and pointing out that she can't do anything without it). When the girls do, she instead teleports away, leaving the girls and Majo Rika to clean up her mess.
- Jerkass: Does a number of petty things For the Evulz. To wit, from her arc in the early first season alone:
- Rubbing in her gaining the shop from Dela after the latter won it off of Majo Rika in a game of poker.
- Giving Doremi a Bad Luck Charm just to toy with her.
- Refusing to let them take their exams.
- Sending her Mooks to give bad publicity for the girls.
- Deliberately makes Good Luck Charms that eventually hurt their owners.
- Refuses to give a refund when people start complaining.
- Refuses to clean up her mess after agreeing to do so when her magic is returned to her after her defeat.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She showed concern for Onpu during the first series when she was abusing forbidden magic, though it could very well have been for selfish reasons...
- Lack of Empathy: Primarily during her earlier appearances, though she mellows out a bit in later arcs.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Was caught by Onpu not long after she unwillingly gave back the Mahou-Dou to the girls.
- Pointed Ears: In her Witch form.
- Pragmatic Villainy: One possible reason for caring about Onpu is that she's the only one who can return her to normal.
- The Rival: To Majo Rika since they were young. Then you find out they're actually twins...
- Starter Villain: The first real villain of the series given that she rubbed her gaining the shop in Majo Rika's face, deliberately caused pain and suffering to those who bought her Bad Luck Charms, and finally went back on her word in removing the cursed effects of her charms when the Ojamajos defeated her.
- Theme Naming: She and her sister Majorika are named after the Japanese cosmetics brand Majolica Majorca.
- Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Teleports away upon having her Crystal Ball being returned to her while failing to keep her end of the bargain to clean up her mess.
- Wicked Witch: Qualified as one in her earlier episodes, given that she cursed people by giving them Bad Luck Charms, is old, kept a rat and a bat as both pets and Mooks, rides a broom, wears her hair in two buns, and cackles.
Hehe (Falinda)
Voiced by: Hiroko Konishi (Japanese), Gabriela Willert (Latin-American Spanish), RocÃo Azofra (European Spanish)
Majo Ruka's fully grown fairy.
- Ambiguously Brown: Hehe has dark skin, but it's implied to be a fake tan when Lala accuses Hehe of dressing younger than her age, which, according to the timeline of the show, would be the ganguro trend.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Disappears after season 1 due to her voice actress, Hiroko Konishi, retiring in 2000.
- The Dragon: Unless Majo Ruka pisses her off somehow. Then she becomes The Starscream.
- Jerkass: Hehe is just as rude as Majo Ruka can be.
- Kawaiiko: Hehe often presents herself as cute.
- Older Than They Look: While Hehe's age isn't stated in the series, she's been with Majo Ruka for quite a while. This is especially pointed out when Lala calls Hehe out on dressing younger than she actually is, as Hehe indulges in what looks to be the ganguro trend, which was popular with teenagers and young women at the time.
- The Rival: Hehe and Lala don't have a rivalry as big as Majo Rika and Majo Ruka's, but it's still there.
- The Starscream: Sometimes Majo Ruka mistreats Hehe, causing her to unintentionally give the upper hand to the Ojamajos.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: Her disguise in the human world is a blue-furred cat.
Majo Monroe
Voiced by: Ikue Otani (Japanese)
- Bewitched Amphibians: After Momoko discovers her. She ultimately died in this form.
- Death by Origin Story: She died just after Momoko passed her Level 1 exam, but not before she passes her earring onto the young girl.
- Different as Night and Day: She is kind and caring whereas Majo Vanilla was an Ice Queen.
- Forced Transformation: When Momoko discovers her.
- No Celebrities Were Harmed: Both name and appearance wise, she may be a parody of famous American actress Marilyn Monroe.
- The Pollyanna: Retained a positive outlook on life even when she was hit by a Forced Transformation.
- Spanner in the Works: In a way: She had somehow obtained the recipe to the My Beloved Tourbillon cake George had made for Majo Tourbillion and sold it in her shop. Once Momoko remembers this, she and the other girls are able to recreate the recipe to remind Tourbillon of the good times, which reverts the Cursed Forest back into the Love Supreme Forest and expose Tourbillon’s real body.
- Sweet Baker: A friendly Cute Witch and pastry chef who befriended Momoko when she was a child.
Mota and Motamota (Drona and Rhona)
Mota voiced by: Yuuko Kawasaki (Japanese), Jessica Calvello (English), Pepa Agudo (European Spanish)
Motamota voiced by: Yoko (Japanese), Erica Schroeder (English), Carmen Podio (European Spanish)
- Character Tic: Both speak quite slowly, often to the point that others have to yell at them just to speed things up.
- Dub Name Change: In Spain, they are known as "Lenta" and "Lentalenta" ("Slow" and "Slow-Slow"), quite intuitively so.
- Fat and Skinny: Mota is small while Motamota is big.
- Motor Mouth: Inverted. Their speech tends to be quite slow.
- Parental Substitute: In season 2, they become adoptive mothers to babies Deki and Dekipaki.
Dela (Conya)
Voiced by: Chihiro Sakurai (Japanese), Mollie Weaver (English)
The Witch World Tax Collector.
- Crazy-Prepared: She has a knack for conveniently having specific items on hand. Justified since she has to deal with this sort of thing all the time as the tax collector.
- Honest John's Dealership: Has repeatedly tried to swindle the girls and Majo Rika by changing the prices of the goods she sometimes brings. In Motto, Momoko sees through it by virtue of knowing the prices of the bakery items beforehand.
- Image Song: "Dela's Song", which also couples as her Leitmotif
- Leitmotif: She typically sings using a mystical voice when she shows up. Carries on in the dubs, to the point in some of them she seems unable to talk without singing.
- Meaningful Rename: Her dub name doubles as an Incredibly Lame Pun.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: It's revealed that her full title is "Majo Dela".
- Silver Vixen: She is much more youthful and attractive than most witches.
- Speak of the Devil: Has a tendency to show up when others speak her name. Lampshaded by Majo Rika.
Majo Toron
The resident inventor of Majo Kai. She is responsible for the creation of the porons the Ojamajos (sans Pop and Hana) use during Dokkan and is thus the only one who can refill them.
- Bungling Inventor: Has shades of this since more than a few of her inventions have backfired. She's still ironing out the flaws.
- Character Tic: Has a tendency to clutch her chin whenever she thinks some issues with her inventions need to be ironed out.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Was responsible for inventing the girl's porons during Dokkan. She has also made a number of working gadgets as well.
- Goggles Do Nothing: Subverted in that she wears them constantly.
- Made of Explodium: Several of her inventions explode after use.
- One-Shot Character: Cameos notwithstanding, she has only appeared in one episode.
Majo Roxanne
Voiced by: Tamie Kubota (Japanese)
- Supreme Chef: Used to be royal chef of Majo Tourbillon back when the latter was the queen.
- Parental Marriage Veto: Objected to Majo Tourbillion relinquishing her crown and marrying a human but changed her mind when she tasted the "Tourbillon My Love" that George made and understood that he truly loved her queen and wished for their happiness.
Majo Heart
Voiced by: Fumie Houjou (Japanese)
- Defrosting Ice Queen
- Hidden Depths: She doesn't start out hating humans. In fact she used to live among them with her foster daughter, Majo Ran. She only grew to distrust humans because some of them bought out her medicines and used her knowledge to cause war, making her lose faith in them.
- The Medic
- Jerkass: At first. The girls' dedication helped win her over. It was with a warm smile that she proclaimed Hana had passed her final exam.
- Parental Substitute: To Majo Ran.
- Stern Teacher: Though she comes off harsh, she is also fair to the new parents from the start (even the Ojamajos).
Majo Don
Voiced by: Ayumi Takatani (Japanese), Raquel MartÃn (European Spanish)
- Defrosting Ice Queen
- Love Hurts: She can't decide whether to marry the man that she loved or not. When she finally made up her mind, so much time had passed that he started getting old and had to marry.
- Greed: Has been described as loving money.
- Jerkass: At first. She warms up to the girls when they do her a favor.
- Pet the Dog: After she heard from Dela that the girls were late because they were nursing the latter, she arranged a delivery to the Witch Kindergarten to allow the girls to see Hana when they finished their job.
Majo Miller/Mirror
Voiced by: Mayumi Shou (Japanese), Victoria Angulo (European Spanish)
- Reasonable Authority Figure: She's the headmistress of Hana's kindergarten, and once she sees how much of a good influence her moms have had on her she allows them to see her more often.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Scones made by Majo Clara with milk tea.
Majo Prima
Voiced by: Rika Fukami (Japanese)
- Big Fancy House: Her place of residence. Surprisingly not commented upon by the girls.
- Impossible Hourglass Figure: Being a model, of course.
- Silver Vixen: She is a model and Witches are established to be Really 700 Years Old, so this is to be expected.
- Sweet Tooth: Subverted. She doesn't like sweet foods because they make her fat.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: She is part of the Witch Senate for a reason, and she is wise enough to know whether someone passes her tests or not.
Majo Sloan
Majo Reed
Voiced by: Mayumi Asano (Japanese)
- Brutal Honesty
- Bewitched Amphibians: Her Dark Secret.
- Dark Secret: The reason for her founding the Village of the Witch Frogs was because she was one herself.
- Rose-Haired Sweetie: In the past.
Majo Vanilla
Voiced by: Youko Matsuoka (Japanese)
- Defrosting Ice Queen
- Different as Night and Day: Majo Monroe is warm, kind and caring while Majo Vanilla is an Ice Queen. Like the others, she eventually melts down.
- Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Her bangs are symbolic of her asocial nature.
- Backup Twin
Witch Queen (Queen Lumina)
Voiced by: Yuka Imai (Japanese), Carol Jacobanis (English), Pepa Agudo (European Spanish)
- Big Good
- The Chessmaster: A benign version.
- Chekhov's Gunman
- The Faceless: Reinforced by the veil she wears until episode 50 of Dokkan.
- Good Is Not Soft: Benevolent she may be, but she is quite strict when it comes to dealing with those who use magic for selfish reasons. She even nearly prevented the Ojamajos from saving Onpu from her Laser-Guided Karma on the grounds of her overuse of Mind Control magic and only relented when the girls convinced her that Onpu had changed (not to mention having used forbidden magic to save herself and them from a Forced Transformation!).
- Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted in the Sharp finale, but stopped by Majo Rin and Majo Heart. She attempts to cure the Ojamajos' condition, knowing as humans they would die before the curse would be released.
- The High Queen: She is the Queen of the Witch World and has been that way for at least 100 years.
- Hot Witch: As old as she is, she is definitely very attractive. Of course, she is also Long-Lived, just like all other Witches in this series, so it's to be expected.
- King Incognito: She's been watching Doremi since she was five years old while in the guise of the school nurse.
- Leitmotif: "Majokai no Joou-sama"
- Light Is Good: Often appears in a shining carriage driven by Majorin.
- Mystical White Hair: Justified. She is a Witch, and it has been established that they do have some considerable differences from humans. She also happens to have some of the most powerful magic in the series. Only the Big Bad has stronger magic.
- Not So Above It All: She has been known to do things that would be out of place for a Queen, such as idiotically testing out the girls' magic tricks during episode 46 of the first series.
- The Reveal: Was really Yuki in disguise and had been watching Doremi since she was little.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Majorin's blue. She has been shown to have a more playful and curious side to her personality and sometimes does rash actions such as going to try and fight Majo Tourbillon to save the Ojamajos.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: She may be strict, but she is a very kind and benevolent ruler who addresses the problems of the Witch World.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: She has intervened on behalf of the girls and allowed them to pass exams where they would normally have failed. Near the end of Motto, she actually attempts to take Majo Tourbillon head on, despite knowing full well how powerful she is. And then during the beginning of Dokkan, she chips her pendant (weakening her powers in the process) so as to give Hana back her position of candidate for the next queen.
- Stealth Mentor
- Two Aliases, One Character: She and Yuki-sensei are one in the same.
Majo Rin (Amaretta)
Voiced by: Reiko Kiuchi (Japanese), Kelly Ray (English), Carolina Tak (European Spanish)
The Queen's royal attendant.
- Flat Character: Gets little to no Character Development throughout the series and only shows some signs of having Hidden Depths. This is despite having about as many appearances as the Queen in her normal garb.
- The Lancer: Majo Rin is the Queen's right-hand Witch.
- Mystical White Hair: Justfied, given her own magic. What little of her hair is visible is a grayish-white.
- Not So Stoic: Has her moments when she is genuinely baffled and unnerved, but they are few and far between.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to the Queen's red. She is calm, stoic, and generally advises the Queen against taking rash actions.
- The Stoic: She stands calm, reserved, and serious in the majority of her scenes.
- The Quiet One: She doesn't speak too much, and when she does, she says very little.
- Undying Loyalty: She is fiercely loyal and dedicated to her Queen, always looking out for her safety and doing what she asks.
Pao
Voiced by: Mika Kanai (Japanese), Pepa Agudo (European Spanish)
A white elephant that grows attached to Hana and eventually follows her to Misora. She has the ability to free people from the Big Bad's control.
- All of the Other Reindeer: The other elephants in her herd shun her due to her white skin and large ears.
- Big Eater: Even when small, she still has the appetite of a healthy elephant. Good thing her jewel-like poop is so valuable.
- Blush Stickers
- Flight: At her full size, she can fly with someone riding her.
- Fun Size: Hana shrinks her down with magic once it was apparent that having a full-sized elephant wouldn't be practical. At the end of the series, Pao grows back to normal.
- Head Pet: For Hana once she shrinks.
- Meaningful Name: "Pao" is Japanese onomatopoeia for an elephant's trumpeting sound.
- Ridiculously Cute Critter: Causes Cuteness Proximity to all the girls once they see her shrunk size.
- Solid Gold Poop: She poops out magic jewels which are considered highly valuable in the Witch World.
- Team Pet: For the Ojamajos in the latter half of Dokkan.
- Uncatty Resemblance: Her Dumbo-like ears look similar to Hana's pigtails.
- Verbal Tic: "-pao".
Yume Sakura
- Language Barrier: Having spent most of her life in Europe, she's not good at speaking Japanese.
- Long-Lost Relative: Yume is Hana's twin sister.
- Meaningful Name: Her name means "dream".
- Separated at Birth: Yume and Hana were born from the same rose, but while Hana was left to spend her childhood in the Witch World, Yume was sent to live with Mirai Sakura abroad in Europe.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: While Hana is very outgoing, Yume is very shy.
- Walking Spoiler: Yume's presence and background gives away more than half of The Reveal in the Ojamajo Doremi 16 novels.
