Kaiju

Numbered Kaijus

    Kaiju No. 1
The first Numbered Kaiju that is also the first Numbered Weapon.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Was reputed to have precognition though it is more like True Sight that can read the electronic signals of the brain and nervous system. It only really had this after it became Gen Narumi's Numbered Weapon.
  • Extra Eyes: Had multiple eyes over its body. This also applies to its weaponized form.
  • Posthumous Character: Long since dead before the beginning and turned into a Numbered Weapon.

    Kaiju No. 2
An already defeated Kaiju who was weaponized. It was used by Isao Shinomiya. It and it's wielder Isao were subsumed by Kaiju No. 9.
  • Posthumous Character: Long since dead before the beginning and turned into a Numbered Weapon.
  • Power Fist: Part of its remains were made into gauntlets that enhance punching power.

    Kaiju No. 4
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2023_02_02_162324358.png

An already defeated Kaiju. Its remains were used to create the suit that used by Kikoru's mother Hikari Shinomiya and later herself.

  • Extra Eyes: Had three eyes.
  • Flight: Has had this ability when alive and as a Numbered Weapon, it gives the compatible wearer this ability and is the only Numbered Weapon that has this capability.
  • Giant Flyer: Was originally one when it was alive.
  • Posthumous Character: Long since dead before the beginning and turned into a Numbered Weapon.

    Kaiju No. 6

A deceased Kaiju that was one of the strongest and most feared in history. Kaiju No. 6's power was so great, it was referred to as "The King of Kaiju" and its defeat cost the life of Kikoru's mother. Its Numbered Weapon was incompatible with any human until Reno Ichikawa.

  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: One of the reasons it’s remembered is for its attack coinciding with unusual snowstorm blowing in at Odawara. Its Numbered Weapon allows its wielder to create attacks with ice and even deactivated a freezing cold energy it emits from it.
  • Hero Killer: When it was killed, it also killed the then Captain of the 2nd Division Hikari Shinomiya.
  • Posthumous Character: Long since dead before the beginning and turned into a Numbered Weapon.
  • Predecessor Villain: Before No. 9 was dubbed the new "King of Kaiju", the title once belonged to No. 6, the monster that killed Kikoru's mother. Long after its death, the cataclysm it causes and the lives it took has embedded No. 6 as a symbol of despair among the populace.
  • Red Baron: No. 6 was the first monster to earn the name "The King of Kaiju".

    Kaiju No. 9

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaijuno9.png
A strange, thin, intelligent Kaiju of human size and shape. It's exact origins are a mystery but it quickly proves itself as a threat to humanity in its efforts to bring about the Age of Kaiju.
  • Abusive Parents: It created Kaiju No. 15 for the sole purpose of killing Kikoru Shinomiya. Whenever No. 15, who considered it her daddy, asked if it loved her, it told her it would only love her if she served her purpose and killed Kikoru. After being mortally wounded, No. 15 realizes her father never loved her and only ever saw her as a pawn, refusing to even look at her as she's dying.
  • Ancient Evil: In chapter 104, showing how long it had existed, it shifts through some of its previous humans it absorbed which includes an armored samurai and an onmyoji priest.
  • The Assimilator: It can take on a person's appearance by eating them, gaining their memories in the process. If it assimilates someone wearing a Numbers Weapon, it gains the abilities of the weaponized Kaiju as well to increase its own strength, such as it did to Isao Shinomiya.
  • Big Bad: A dangerous, recurring foe with a sinister agenda to ensure the Age of Kaiju.
  • Body Horror: Its main attack consist in deforming his own fingers to fire chunks of his flesh at his opponents.
  • The Chessmaster: No. 9 is highly strategic and relies a lot on its intellect to combat the Defense Force. Not only does it use clones of itself to distract the most powerful Defense Force Unit, the First Division, so it can perform a sneak attack and successfully assimilate Isao Shinomiya to gain his power and memories. It then spent several months formulating a plan where it it creates 5 new Numbered Kaiju to take on the biggest threats to it, as yet another divide and conquer strategy to assimilate Mina Ashiro, with the goal of taking away the biggest threat to giant-sized Kaiju, allowing him to use his army of Daikaiju to take over Tokyo as a base to attack the rest of Japan.
  • Creepy Monotone: It speaks in a cold, menacing and emotionless tone.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: It shows up in what's supposed to be a training exercise after it's over to revive the dead kaiju and give them a significant power boost. Later, it does the same thing when the Fungus Kaiju is being dealt with. However, there are only so many it can resurrect at a time, and it's tiring for it.
  • Evil Evolves: No. 9 is highly intelligent and adaptable, able to formulate strategies to overcome old weakness and assimilate others to increase its knowledge and power. Isao likens it to an ever-changing virus.
  • Eyeless Face: Played with. At first, it appears to be eyeless, but it has eyes below the bone ridges of its face. The eyes are often not drawn, even at angles where they should be visible, to reinforce its creepy appearance. When they are drawn, it's almost exclusively when it's threatening someone.
  • Faux Affably Evil: There are times where No. 9 will feign civility when interacting with humans, especially against its opponents, but it's clear none of it is genuine and what lurks beneath the rictus grin it sports is a ruthless monster.
  • Hand Blast: Its main attack is a combination between this and Finger Gun, mutating its fingers and causing them to burst and shoot at targets. Its transformative abilities mean it isn't limited to just its two hands either.
  • The Heavy: No. 9 serves as the most persistent antagonist throughout the series, starting from the recruits' second preliminary training. Even though No. 8 manages to defeat it, it manages to escape. Its ability to disguise itself as humans and fuse with other beings to absorb their powers make it one of the greatest threats against humanity.
  • Hero Killer: He absorbed Isao Shinomiya, effectively killing him and gained Kaiju No. 2's tremendous power in the process.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Despite it's immense intellect, it isn't sure how humans talk while on the phone and refers to hijacking the TV signal to address Tokyo as taking a selfie.
  • Human Disguise: It can shift between kaiju and human form, and can Kill and Replace people to take a new identity.
  • It Can Think: It's the first kaiju in the series shown to be capable of coherent speech, with the exception of Kafka and the Mysterious Larva kaiju that entered him. That's because it's also a human/Kaiju hybrid of some kind, though it doesn't identify as human.
  • Kill and Replace: Its standard practice for adopting a new human disguise is to eat someone to take on their appearance and memories.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Savvy enough to know when it's best to retreat with what you've got and manages to do so quite often, even when opponents like Kafka try to stop him.
  • Lean and Mean: Unlike Kafka's Kaiju form, it's thin and gaunt to show his villainous nature. This changes after it absorbs Isao Shinomiya and gains a build even bigger than Kafka's.
  • Maker of Monsters: It doesn't just revive Kaiju, it can create entirely new ones. No. 10 reveals No. 9 was his creator, and No. 9 spends several months creating five new numbered Kaiju and dozens of giant-sized Kaiju.
  • Many Spirits Inside of One: While No. 9 is in the process of assimilating Mina, she realizes that there are hundreds of Kaiju inside of No. 9.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He created a Kaiju Expy of Kikoru with the exact same "daddy issues" for the sole purpose of having an assassin specially trained to kill Kikoru. Said Expy, Kaiju No. 15, views No. 9 as her father and desperately seeks his approval just like Kikoru wanted her own father's approval... But while Isao truly and deeply loved his daughter, No.9 only ever saw No.15 as a pawn. As a result, Kikoru eventually manages to overpower and defeat No.15, leaving the dying Kaiju to acknowledge how different their respective "fathers" truly are.
  • The Medic: Is capable of reviving deceased Kaiju. As No. 10 reveals, he can also make Kaiju as well.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: It can create multiples arms using its powers to shoot at its targets faster.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Reno starts putting genuine pressure on it, it bulks up and grows two extra arms. And when Kafka shows up, it grows even more arms than that.
  • Red Baron: Once the threat it poses is recognized by the Defense Force, No. 9 inherits No. 6's old sobriquet as "The King of Kaiju".
  • Red Right Hand: The eyes of its Human Disguise look... Off, clearly hinting that there is something wrong about it.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Zig-zagged. While No. 9 had bulked up in preparation for his rematch with No. 8, he largely just added extra mass. Kafka had developed better control over his powers and was able to take him down in two hits, one for each core... except it, and the one Narumi takes out, were clones the real No. 9 made as a diversion, with his real body heading to the base and absorbing Isao Shinomiya, taking Kaiju No. 2's powers in the process. His plans were set up so that he'd get a numbered Kaiju's power no matter what.
  • Villain Teleportation: It dissipates into smoke and vanishes as mysteriously as it arrives. However, doing this takes a second or two, and hurting it before it can finish interrupts this process.
  • Voice of the Legion: Its voice sounds quite demonic which, alongside his Creepy Monotone, makes it sound very terrifying.
  • You Are Number 6: Standard to all Kaiju that evade or survive the first attempt to kill them. Counts as Red Baron as well, since the numeric designation means they are most likely very dangerous.

    Kaiju No. 10
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaiju8_wyvern_humanoid.png

A humanoid kaiju that leads a flock of wyvern kaiju.

  • Blood Knight: He attacked Tachikawa Base to fight the strongest person there. It's such a strong urge that he's willing to be weaponized so he can keep fighting.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After being defeated by Hoshina at Tachikawa Base, he takes a liking to the Vice-Captain and actually volunteers to be converted into a living weapon just so he and Hoshina can fight together.
  • Extra Eyes: He can make more eyes appear on his body as he demonstrated in his giant form.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: He first shows up attacking Tachikawa Base just because he wants to fight a strong opponent. After being captured, he volunteers to be turned into a fully conscious Living Weapon used by Hoshina because he wants to keep fighting strong opponents, and doesn't care if his opponents are human or Kaiju. Since he's only on the heroes' side it for the thrill of the fight instead of for moral reasons, this leads to a few humorous situations where he tells Hoshina they should go kill Defense Force officers after putting down whatever Kaiju they defeated.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: All numbered weapons technically qualify, being made from the remains of mighty Kaiju to allow their user to wield said Kaiju's powers and use them against other monsters. However, Number 10 in particular stands out because he's still alive and conscious as a Weapon, and loves fighting so much that he's actually perfectly fine siding with the Defence Force if it means he'll have no shortage of powerful foes to fight.
  • Living Weapon: As a weapon, he is an Empathic Talking Powered Bio-Armor with a Prehensile Tail.
  • Losing Your Head: His head gets separated from his body after getting his upper body blasted by Mina. He survives this and is taken prisoner.
  • More Teeth than the Osmond Family: His mouth has two layers of teeth, one of multiple but humanoid teeth, and an outer layer of fangs where his lips would be. The cross where his eyes should be is yet another mouth with smaller, but still sharp, fangs.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He tells Hoshina that they resemble each others since they both enjoyed their fight together to convince him to weaponize No. 10 and use it as his weapon. And he's later proved to be absolutely right, when the realization of how similar he and 10 are allows Hoshina to unleash his Weapon's full power.
  • One-Winged Angel: After receiving enough damage from the vice-captain, he turns into a giant monster much more powerful than his human-sized version.
  • Taking You with Me: Tries this when he ends up losing, his last roar being to get all the Wyvern Yonju to merge together for a suicide bomb. It fails, thanks to Kafka intervening.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Hoshina after becoming his weapon. No. 10 is such a Blood Knight that it initially can't synchronize with its more strategic partner. Even once they do start working together, they still keep bickering as they mow down their enemies. Then, from Chapter 90 and onwards, Hoshina realizes that he and No. 10 are no different, No. 10's Blood Knight personality resonating with the fact that Hoshina genuinely loves using his blades. This sheer realization not only removes the whole Teeth-Clenched Teamwork aspect of their dynamic entirely, it also allows them to synchronize to the point that Hoshina can now use his suit's power with 100% efficiency.
  • Token Evil Teammate: After becoming Hoshina's Living Weapon, he joins the heroes' fight against Kaiju, but only for the thrill of fighting and otherwise is a Heroic Comedic Sociopath who urges Hoshina to kill his fellow officers whenever he gets bored of killing Kaiju.
  • Worthy Opponent: No. 10 views Hoshina as one, being completely overjoyed at finding a rival that can give him a good fight. He enjoyed the fight so much that he becomes a Living Weapon so he can Hoshina can fight together.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #10 after the base attack.

    Kaiju No. 11
A Kaiju with hydrokinetic powers created to fight Gen Narumi.
  • Making a Splash: Has hydrokinetic powers to counter Gen Narumi who uses Numbers Weapon 1 which can read electricity to predict a living thing's movement, since the moving water has no electricity flowing within.
  • This Cannot Be!: It has this reaction when Gen begins being able to predict its moves even though it's controlling water. When Gen reveals the reason for this is because he's developed Numbers Weapon 1's ability to see electrons and temperature fluctuations to the point he can see the future, No. 11 rants it can't be possible because this ability isn't in Isao's memories it was given.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #11 as part of the group of five Kaiju that split up the Kaiju Defense Force combatants.

    Kaiju No. 12

A Kaiju that resembles No. 10. It is actually the "upgraded" Kaiju that No. 10 served as the prototype for.

  • Foil: No. 12 serves as this to No. 10. No. 10 was the prototype for the "perfected product" that is 12. While 10 is a talkative Blood Knight who only cares about fighting a Worthy Opponent and rushes headlong into fights, No. 12 is stoic, silent, strategic and is only concerned with victory, not having a good time.
  • Silent Antagonist: To further highlight the differences between itself and 10, No. 12 doesn't say a word during its fight with Hoshina and No. 10.
  • Soldier vs. Warrior: No. 12 is the professional, strategic soldier who fights to win compared to No. 10's hot-blooded, impulsive warrior who fights for the fun of battling strong opponents.
  • Upgrade vs. Prototype Fight: It is an upgraded #10 and is the Kaiju fighting Soshiro Hoshina wearing Numbers Weapon 10.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #12 as part of the group of five Kaiju that split up the Kaiju Defense Force combatants.

    Kaiju No. 13

A Kaiju specializing in athletic fighting.

  • I Know Madden Kombat: Its fighting style is based on athletism, complete with using a crouching start to get to his opponents as fast as possible.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #13 as part of the group of five Kaiju that split up the Kaiju Defense Force combatants.

    Kaiju No. 14

Kaiju no. 14

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kn8_kaiju14.png
A floating, monolithic being with 4 faces. A numbered Kaiju created to rival Mina Ashiro.
  • Multiple Head Case: Has four faces.
  • The Pawn: Turns out, it's not necessarily there to defeat Mina... it's there to teleport Monster No. 9 to her location after she defeats it.
  • Power Floats. Floats in the air with no discernable method of propulsion.
  • Teleportation: Has this power to quickly move.
  • The Monolith: Has the appearance of a huge black slab with four faces.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #14 as part of the group of five Kaiju that split up the Kaiju Defense Force combatants.

    Kaiju No. 15
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2023_02_02_162521335.png
Kikoru form
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_2023_02_02_162700243.png
True form

A female humanoid Kaiju with psychic powers that is also a doppelgänger of Kikoru Shinomiya.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: During her death scene, there are flashbacks to her life being raised by No. 9. No. 15 started off as a cheerful child who unconditionally loved her "daddy" and repeatedly asked if he loved her back. No. 9 only told her he would love her if she served the purpose he created her for and killed Kikoru Shinomiya. Sobbing as she dies, No. 15 realizes she was never anything more than a pawn to her "father", who refuses to do much as look at her even while she's dying. Even Kikoru expresses pity for her.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: She's a murderous Kaiju with black eyes, even in her human form.
  • Brain Monster: Her base Kaiju form has the top of her head have multiple disproportionate large brains arranged to look like a hairdo with Girlish Pigtails and clusters of smaller brains that make Clothing Appendages of a necklace and skirt. It is a Meaningful Appearance since she has Psychic Powers.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: All her murderous acts are done out of a child-like love for her "daddy", Kaiju No. 9, who has promised only to love and acknowledge her if she fulfills the purpose he created her for: killing Kikoru Shinomiya.
  • Differently Dressed Duplicates: She can take the form of a black haired Kikoru Doppelgänger in a black Sailor Fuku. It's notable that she was doing this as she developed, taking on the appearance of a child Kikoru when she was physically smaller.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She considers her creator, No. 9, to be her father and loves him unconditionally. Unfortunately, her father only sees her as a pawn.
  • Evil Knockoff: She's a Kaiju doppelgänger of Kikoru Shinomiya who was created by No. 9 for the sole purpose of killing the person she was based on. In addition to being a match for her physically, she was given psychic powers to exploit Kikoru's parental issues.
  • Human Disguise: Unlike most Kaiju, No. 15 can pass herself off as a human, in her case a black-haired, black-eyed version of Kikuro.
  • Psychic Powers: She can use mental powers to be a Master of Illusion. She uses it to Mind Rape Kikoru.
  • Terms of Endangerment: No. 15 keeps referring to Kikoru as "Little Kikoru" in faux affection even as she tries to kill her and Mind Rapes her.
  • Tragic Villain: She doesn't just look like Kikoru; she's also very similar in terms or personality, more specifically, how desperate she is for the affection and approval of her "father" (Number 9). Although, unlike Isao Shinomiya (who was cold and distant towards Kikoru but deeply loved her nonetheless), Number 9 doesn't care at all about 15 unless she can do what he created her for (killing Kikoru). We only find out about this through a flashback in her dying moments, and it adds a tragic layer to her death as she points out herself that Kikoru's father was hard on her because he loved her, whereas Number 9 only ever saw Number 15 as a pawn. While the atrocities committed by 15 prevent Kikoru from feeling affection towards her despite their similarities, she does promise to punch Number 9 square in the face on her behalf.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Or gal, in this case. As with Tragic Monster, she desperately wants No. 9 to love her, and he dangles that to get her more motivated to kill Kikoru.
  • You Are Number 6: Is given the designation of #15 as part of the group of five Kaiju that split up the Kaiju Defense Force combatants.

Other Kaijus

    Philinosoma
A Honju that appeared and was quickly dispatched at the beginning of the series.

    Mysterious Larva

The Kaiju responsible for giving Kafka his powers. It is not much larger than a normal bird. It has the ability to speak, declaring "I found you!" after finding Kafka in the hospital. It entered his body and fused with him to turn him into a sort of Kaiju human hybrid.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Well, it is a Kaiju (or at the very least related to Kaijus), and every single Kaiju seen so far, with the exception of Number 8, was either malevolent or a mindless force of nature. Yet, the Larva doesn't seem to want to cause wanton destruction and actively fights against his own kind using Kafka as a vessel, while still leaving him in complete control. Except during the fight against Isao Shinomiya, but even then, the Larva wasn't interested in harming Shinomiya himself, but rather the Kaiju from which Shinomiya's weapon was made.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: This creature actually wants to kill other Kaiju for some reason. This proves to be a huge problem when it mistakenly identifies Isao Shinomiya's weapon as the Kaiju it was created from, causing the Larva to fully control Kafka in order to fight back with killing intent. Thankfully, Kafka manages to regain control before Shinomiya gets truly harmed.
  • Mysterious Past: Virtually *nothing* is known about it. Where does it come from? Why did it seek Kafka out in particular? Why does it want to kill other Kaiju? Why is it able to talk? Why did it Freak Out and go ballistic when it sensed Kaiju No. 2's presence within Shinomiya? Nobody knows, not even Kafka himself.
  • Orifice Invasion: How it fused with Kafka.
  • Symbiotic Possession: Played with, as Kafka has control over his body. Until he encounters weapons made from Kaiju No. 2.
  • Unstoppable Rage: It goes berserk upon seeing weapons made from Kaiju No. 2. In fact, it appears that the Larva didn't realize they were merely weapons made from a Kaiju corpse and wielded by a human, and it's implied it reacted the way it did because it genuinely believed that it was up against Kaiju No.2 itself in a life-or-death situation.

    Trichonephila
Spider like Yoju that appeared after the Philinosoma was slayed.

    Primidinius
A kaiju group made up of a Honju and several Yoju that were recently captured which the recruits must battle for entrance into the defense force.
  • Charged Attack: The Honju's uniorgan let's it gather energy on it's two smaller horns for an Energy Ball ranged attack.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Deliberately induced. When the Honju was captured it was maimed to remove its combative uni-organ and reduce its combat power.
  • Super-Hearing: To compensate for its lack of eyes, which also makes it exceedingly vulnerable to sound-based weaponry.

    Fungus Kaiju
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaiju8_fungus_kaiju.png

The first Kaiju fought by the new recruits of the Kaiju Defense Force, a titanic mass of floating mushrooms and fungi.

  • Explosive Breeder: Not only does it produce a lot of after beasts, but the after beasts also have reproductive organs of their own. Luckily, Kafka notices this and passes the info to the team before it ever becomes a problem, much to Kaiju No. 9's consternation.
  • Kaiju: All the kaiju qualify, but it's of note for being large enough to step over a city block full of skyscrapers without brushing a single one.
  • The Unfought: By the new recruits, at least. Mina handles it on her own.

    Wyvern Kaiju
Flying kaiju who (normally) operate alone.
  • Action Bomb: The humanoid leader can control them to do this.
  • Breath Weapon: They have this for a ranged attack.
  • Giant Flyer: They are large flying kaiju.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: The fact that multiple of them working together when they normally appear solo clued in that there is a greater Kaiju commanding their assault.

    Ant Kaiju
Giant Ant Kaiju. No. 9 controlled them in his tried attack.
