Detective Conan: Magic File 2-Shin’ichi Kudo, The Case of the Mysterious Wall and the Black Lab is an OVA released in 2008. It is the second Magic File OVA but the first one to have an original story. It also serves as a Prequel to the film Detective Conan Film 12: Full Score of Fear.
A man came to Shin’ichi on a Sunday morn in a park asking if Shin’ichi saw him last Thursday at the same time. He explains to Shin’ichi that on that Thursday morning his grandmother died, and the police suspect him to be her killer. But the man insists that he was in the park at that time. Shin’ichi, becoming interested in the case, insists to help him find an alibi.
This OVA provides examples of:
- A Day in the Limelight: Shin’ichi as himself is The Protagonist for the entire runtime.
- Agent Mulder: Ran believes in espers and ESP and the fact that there might be cases Shin’ichi cannot solve.
- Agent Scully: Shin’ichi doesn’t believe in the supernatural nor the fact that there could be a case he can’t solve. He’s right.
- Always Someone Better: As usual, when Yusaku shows up he immediately solves the case and gives Shin’ichi a hint.
- Blush Sticker: The 4-year-old Detective Boys all sport a pair.
- Contrived Coincidence: Shin’ichi meets the Detective Boys three years before he is shrunk and becomes their classmate.
- Demoted to Extra: Shin’ichi as Conan is completely absent due to this being a Whole Episode Flashback. His seiyuu Minami Takayama only gets to say the closing narration.
- Sailor Fuku: Ran and Sonoko wear these because they are middle schoolers.
- Silly Reason for War: Ran and Shin’ichi stop speaking for a week because Ran is an Agent Mulder and Shin’ichi is an Agent Scully.
- Stealth Sequel: In the end, Shin’ichi and Ran hear Reiko Akiba singing “Amazing Grace” and Conan says in the closing narration that this will be important in three years.
- Whole Episode Flashback: This OVA never leaves its “three years ago” time period.
