* VillainDecay: Joel gradually shifts from a competent - if [[CompleteMonster monstrous]] - villain to a dumb brute.

* WoobieDestroyerofWorlds: [[ColdSniper Marie]] and Damien could qualify. In the former, she has been slowly stripped of any emotion, personality, and innocence in her childhood to the point where she enters the Battle Royale with just a determination of survival so she can become the best ballerina. For the latter, he was a survivor of the first Battle Royale game and because of his injuries, was either jeered or shunned by the majority of his class.

* InvincibleVillain: Damien, at least in the middle third of the story. He’s more interesting before and after.

* AccidentalNightmareFuel: Benny, just Benny. If you had nightmares about Donnie Darko’s Frank, then do not read the sections involving this depraved rabbit. You have been warned. This is eventually [[LampshadeHanging discussed]] by Ashley and Carter, so clearly Marston knew what he was doing.
