* ObviousBeta: ''Dark Hero Days's'' DLC was released with so many crippling bugs and glitches that they had to ''take it down'' from PSN so they could fix them... and it still had several glitches! On UsefulNotes/PlayStationVita, the DLC will '''''never''''' work, failing to verify.

* ThatOneSidequest: Finding and defeating all the pirates is a giant pain in the ass LuckBasedMission as it is, but the Ambling Pirates just seem to love appearing significantly more often than any other. And his level is eight times higher than the floor, making him frustrating to deal with if you're not going through a low level item even though he's alone.

* DemonicSpiders: The Ambling Pirates, found on the Item World, are 8x stronger than the other enemies on the map, and their high speed makes them hard to hit. To make things worse, this type of enemy has the highest chance of appearing than all other Pirates.

** When Rozalin is snarking at Adell, she asks if he's so sure of himself since his level is over 100,000,000. The current highest level cap, as of VideoGame/Disgaea6, is 99,999,999, one level ''shy'' of it.

* {{Moe}}: Yukimaru is one of the cutest ninja in existence, [[VerbalTic zam]].

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: While it took [[VindicatedByHistory more time]] for the game to be appreciated internationally, the game was popular upon release in Japan and has remained a popular entry with both the game and main characters consistently scoring high on popularity polls.

** According to their names and descriptions, magic monster weapons are all [[TomeOfEldritchLore Tomes Of Eldritch Lore.]] One of them is named ''Literature/{{Twilight}}''. Coincidence?

* VindicatedByHistory: The game's premise, following a [[TheHero classically righteous]] hero in his quest to topple a [[ObviouslyEvil classically despicable]] villain, was divisive among fans when it first released, with many rejecting the LighterAndSofter tone and comparatively more vanilla story. The new cast also caused an uproar; as far as some people were concerned, [[ReplacementScrappy Adell was not Laharl]]. While the original game is still generally accepted as having the [[FirstInstallmentWins stronger characters and story]], ''Disgaea 2'' is much more appreciated in the fandom than it used to be, especially its [[BattleCouple hero and heroine]].

* ShockingSwerve: The worst ending is probably the most disturbing thing ''Creator/NipponIchi'' has ever produced, up there with ''VideoGame/SoulNomadAndTheWorldEaters'' Demon Path ending. [[spoiler: To make things clear, Zenon's spirit possesses Adell, who proceeds to ''kill and eat Hanako and Taro.'']]

* CompleteMonster: [[EvilOverlord Overlord Zenon]] is one of the most powerful and [[TheDreaded feared]] Overlords in the multiverse. He curses the human world to eventually turn all its citizens into demons and erase their memories. A [[DirtyCoward coward]] at heart, he flees from battles he cannot win and arranges a tournament where all challengers to his title will fight each other for an audience, just a pretense for him to get his enemies to kill each other. When confronted with Demon Lord Etna, who he was previously fearful of, he laughs at the sight of a "little girl" and thinks he overestimated her. When she kills him, Zenon uses the curse on the human world to resurrect and goes into hiding while he fully recovers. He also massacred the Snow Clan ninja fifteen years ago to ensure they could not resist his control over the humans. His one soft spot is for his daughter Rozalin--except that [[spoiler:it's just a twisted revenge on the True Zenon that Rozalin is a reincarnation of; this imposter Zenon stole True Zenon's name and raised her reincarnated form as a daughter for the ironic amusement of his enemy looking up to him and praising him as a father, when actually Zenon cares nothing for Rozalin and has raised her without letting her even see him]]. Zenon is the very worst that the demons of the Netherworld can produce, a genocidal and cowardly usurper who would condemn an entire human world to become mindless monsters just to increase his own powers.

* FridgeBrilliance: [[spoiler:The summoning ritual at the beginning of the game didn't fail.]] Another example ties into FridgeHorror; throughout the game, Rozalin displays a taste for meat, especially when undercooked. [[spoiler:In the worst ending, Adell devours Taro and Hanako under the influence of Overlord Zenon. Rozalin must have eaten a lot of other demons during her days as an EldritchAbomination...]]

** The worst ending, in part because you do NOT expect this sort of thing out of this series. [[spoiler:In summary, Adell kills his adopted siblings and eats them, mercifully offscreen. However, if you're playing with the JP voice track you get [[SarcasmMode treated]] to the disturbingly realistic sounds of Zenon!Adell ''gruesomely tearing their bodies apart and eating them.'']]

* GameBreaker:
** Dark Hero Days' DLC for Pleinair and Sapphire are free. They're both level 100. You can get them from the beginning. Pleinair joins you without a fight. End boss of the story is level 90. Do the math.
*** You can also recruit Sapphire at the beginning of the game by pounding on her with Pleinair while your normal characters act as bait as she will make a beeline for them due to the huge difference in level.\\
The Steam version '[[{{Nerf}} fixed]]' this by making all the DLC characters level with your chapter, [[OverratedAndUnderleveled making them always level-appropriate to current enemies in the main story]]. That said, all the DLC characters' stats and proficiencies are still way above anything your PlayerMooks can do at that level, and the bonuses charts from their levels are identical and award mid-game stuff (like 2500 bonus XP or mid-tier weapons) way before you could legally acquire them.
** Thanks to how standard status effects work, the Sleep + Poison combo. Thieves can inflict both with a 100% hit rate in any enemy that is not a bonus boss. Since poison takes 20% of the unit's max HP, all it takes to kill any enemy in the game is to make them sleep, then poison, then wait five turns. The Kunoichi class goes beyond by being able to inflict the same statuses from four panels away in a cross-shaped area, hitting up to five enemies. A team of 10 Kunoichies with no equipment at Lv. 30 can break through Axel Mode without taking any damage, which means a lot when the enemies go all the way up to Lv. 250 there.
** Due to what is perhaps a [[GoodBadBug design oversight]], you can capture a Lv. 9999 Nekomata as early as chapter 4. What keeps this from breaking the game in half is that you have to capture many Nekomatas on the way there and farm the item world for cash in order to heal those captured beasts. Once you do get a Lv. 9999 one, you never even have to use it on a single storyline map: the Item world bonus gauge prizes (high-ranked items and troves of EXP) are enough to steam roll the story and a good part of the postgame with your normal party.
*** This is no longer possible in both the [=PSP=] and [=PC=] releases due to one of two rules regarding the capture of monsters introduced in Disgaea 3. Specifically, you can no longer capture monsters that are higher in level than your highest level character.

* {{HSQ}}: The worst ending tends to horrify people when they see it. ''Especially'' [[SchmuckBait if you have the JP voice track on.]]

** There's also the fact that he constantly address Axel with "Axel darling".

* AntiClimaxBoss: [[spoiler: Fake]] Zenon. While he is really strong, he has no minions to help him, and the map has no tricks or hazards, meaning you just have a straight up 10 against 1 battle.

* ScrappyMechanic: The Dark Court. While the idea of getting rewarded for ''crimes'' fits the series' tone and can be amusing the first few times, many felt that the novelty wore off its welcome due to the fact it replaced the statisticians as the main EXP booster. While multiple characters can enter the Dark Court and the Bailiff (the Innocent that determines the level on which the Dark Court can be found) can be passed transferred onto other items, many felt that it was still unwieldy and cumbersome compared to the statisticians, which are more flexible as it can be easily given to any item the player chooses.

* SophomoreSlump: While no one will argue the gameplay hasn't been improved from the first Disgaea title, general consensus is that the characters and story just aren't as memorable or interesting compared with the Hour of Darkness cast. Some characters like Adel, Rozalin, and Axel have their fair share of fans, but that's about it. Thankfully, ''VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice'' stepped up its game.

* ReplacementScrappy: At the time his game debuted, many were disappointed that Adell was the StraightMan and more of a classical JRPG hero compared to Laharl. Fans warmed up to him over time as they began to appreciate his HiddenDepths.

* TheScrappy:
** An in-universe example. Just EXISTING is a crime for Tink. Considering how obnoxious he can be (especially when his red personality is dominant), though, it's hard to disagree with the game.
** Geomancers, at least as enemies. Come across a Geomancer or two on the other side of an item world map? Better start saying goodbye to those bonuses. And even if you don't care about the bonuses, the skill takes its sweet time pulling out the bonus list and deleting the bonus item even with attack animations off. Their shrill voices only makes it more aggravating.
** The Ambling Pirates. Finding and defeating all the pirates is [[ScrappyMechanic a giant pain in the ass luck based mission]] as it is, but the Ambling Pirates just seem to love appearing significantly more often than any other. And his level is 8X higher than the floor, making him frustrating to deal with if you're not going through a low level item even though he's alone.

* TearJerker: The early chapters of the Manga adaptation focus on the fallout between Etna and Laharl that leads to her involvement in the main story. She faked being upset about Laharl eating a pudding cup she was saving to justify quitting so she could become an Overlord, leading to the majority of his workforce to quit over his refusal to apologize to her. Laharl however doesn't know that and spends most of his on screen time during these chapters sitting in an empty throne room mindlessly playing games, watching TV and eating snacks in an obvious depression with only Flonne as company. It's made explicitly clear that he ''misses'' Etna but can't suck up his pride to apologize.

** The Kurtis clones were given a voice and speaking manner that parodies Creator/WilliamShatner.
