** Lilo is about six years old, yet she runs about Kokaua Town[[note]]her hometown on Kauaʻi, not named in this film but later on in ''The Series'', which is based off of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanapepe,_Hawaii Hanapepe]] on the same island[[/note]] with Stitch, and no adults.
** In one scene, Nani simply hands Lilo some money and leaves her in the middle of town on her own while she's at work. With how small the neighborhood is (Stitch is able to ride a tricycle to the edge of the island in little time at all) and how the adults all know the sisters by name and greet them kindly, it's likely that they keep an eye on Lilo when she passes by. This is also TruthInTelevision for many indigenous Hawaiian communities and small towns.

** Lilo's hula classmates are also shown to be this, riding their tricycles down a neighborhood road with no sign of an adult babysitter. This suggests that this is a regular occurence for ''all'' the neighborhood children, not just Lilo.

Edited to be more objective, canon details, and for Truth In Television. Numerous Hawaiian viewers said this was a common occurrence on the islands and was normal. The earlier version also sounded dangerously close to bashing Nani.

** In one scene, Nani simply hands Lilo some money and leaves her in the middle of town on her own while she's at work. Clearly, there was a reason they sent in Cobra Bubbles ''before'' Stitch came into the picture. Luckily, the whole ''ʻohana'' thing probably means Lilo has grown-up friends in the neighborhood looking out for her, but Nani is still pretty negligent, given that she's only about nineteen in the first film.

* TakeThat: The film has an undercurrent expressing a cynical view toward Hawaii becoming a tourist trap. Lilo takes pictures of white visiting tourists for a photo collection, reversing the objectifying behavior of tourists taking photos of residents of the places they're visiting, and Nani expresses a sour-grapes but understandable sentiment after losing her waitressing job that she was doing a hokey luau show for foreigners. The sunburned tourist Lilo photographs is also portrayed as a ButtMonkey who never gets to enjoy his ice cream.
