* {{Aesop}}: Ash not only gets the usual Aesops about sexism and the DoubleStandard but also gets some unexpected ones about PositiveDiscrimination. Meanwhile, Ash also provides some unexpected Aesops to Emily due to her outsider perspective on female behavior, as well as some lessons on the importance of having fun and living for yourself rather than someone else's expectations for you. Finally, the readers get some insights about the battle between the sexes that Ash and Emily are either too obtuse to get or too proud to acknowledge.

That person faced many hardships but persevered all because of one comic. Then in 2007, that person died while taking transgender chemical treatments. It horrified the author beyond all reason. The kicker?

In the small hillside town of Tempest, Massachusetts, boy racer Ash was [[GenderBender turned into a girl]], studious Emily had [[{{Retcon}} the past two years of her life erased]] — including her admission to Harvard — and angelic loser Rumisiel was exiled to Earth for his incompetence. Fortunately, due to a side effect of the accident, these three can still remember the universe-as-it-was. Lucky, because Rumisiel fears his superiors would likely 'correct' the misfile [[IMeantToDoThat by making it permanent]].

* CerebusSyndrome: [[spoiler:The murder of several high ranking angels, including "two keyholders"]] has heralded in a steadily darkening plotline. However, for the most part the story remains dark only when the story focuses on the angels. One might say that the knights of God are in fact [[KnightOfCerebus Knights of Cerebus]].

* [[GratuitousForeignLanguage Gratuitous Hebrew]]: The names of the angels are meant to resemble the traditional's ones names, which means basically taking a random word or name and gluing "iel" at then end.

* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: [[http://www.misfile.com/misfile/2007-09-25Rumisiel doesn't warrant an introduction, according to Ash.]]

* {{Spork}}: Emily resists the temptation to test Rumisiel's {{immortality}} with one in [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=274 this strip]].

** Averted with Missi, which is one of the problems with her character. There was that one time in the shower where she mentioned her parents being neglectful and her feeling like an outsider with Ash and Emily, but that revelation seems to have mostly been ignored.

* TransparentCloset: The other possible explanation for Emily's attraction to Ash. [[http://www.misfile.com/index.php?page=273 Emily's confusion]] on this point is a large part of the UnresolvedSexualTension in the strip. Was running wheel to wheel with SingleTargetSexuality but now appears to be pulling ahead. Also, Ash to anyone even slightly observant (remember, they think he's always been a chick).

The comic is notable for dealing with a GenderBender plot in a much less {{Fanservice}}-ey way, and with much more emotional depth and serious character consideration, than is the norm. Essentially, if you left out the supernatural and fantastical elements of the story, you'd still be left with a good tale about the challenges faced by a {{transgender}} boy dealing with life in a girl's body. Also unusual is the fact that the "old universe", where Ash is a boy with emotionally-distant parents and Emily is a college-bound senior with a mean streak, has literally never been seen in the comic, although it's often alluded to.

* GreenEyedMonster: Ash and Em spend a significant chunk of the comic unwilling to even consider the possibility of dating each other due to her being straight and him being [[GenderBender trapped in a girl's body]], [[spoiler:which is actually just as awkward for him when they finally due get together]]. You'd never know that from the way they each react when the other gets a date with someone else, or suggests that they might.

* AssholeVictim: Those guys from AttemptedRape below? They exist in a story full of angels with penchants for wacky schemes and colorful revenge: [[spoiler:but unfortunately for them, they run the much more serious Ramael while planning yet more sins, and he simply kills them with his holy sword.]]

* [[SheIsTheKing She is King of the Mountain]]: Ash insists on being referred to as ''King'' of the Mountain as a way of attempting to affirm his male identity.

* {{Adorkable}}: Emily outright calls Oscar this.

* HeelRealization: While not a villain perse Emily has historically had issues truly grasping how bad the titular Misfile has affected Ash mentally and emotionally and in some cases dismissed Ash's feelings of wrongness in "her" current situation. Until she finds herself having to explain to her mother that [[http://www.misfile.com/misfile/2015-11-05 it's important to her that she not pretend to be something she isn't.]] [[http://www.misfile.com/misfile/2015-11-06 To her credit she picks up on it almost immediately after being in the same situation.]] [[http://www.misfile.com/misfile/2015-11-09 And tries to make good on her inability to understand Ash's misery about the Misfile.]]

* SuddenlySexuality: Another deconstructed trope as Ash, Missi, and Emily all appear to struggling with the implications of their relationships.
