* DoubleEdgedBuff:
** Briar has an extreme case of a tradeoff through her "Blood Frenzy" ability; when she enters a frenzy, she gains bonus movement and attack speed, extra on-hit damage, and an area of effect on her attacks. But in exchange, she's completely uncontrollable by her player save for ending her frenzy with another ability. So, the decision is a matter of extra damage potential in exchange for the game's AI making all the decisions.
** Rammus's "Defensive Ball Curl" grants him greatly increased armor and magic resist, and any enemies that hit him will take damage back due to his spiky shell. The tradeoff though is his drastically lowered movement speed, slowing down his mobility to a literal crawl.

* AttackChanceFailure: [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness In the game's very early years]], there was universal stat known as "Dodge", implemented as a sort of inverse to "CriticalHit Chance" that allowed certain characters to randomly [[NoSell shrug off basic attacks to receive no damage]]. Only one champion had innate Dodge as part of their kit -- Jax, whose ability ''Counter Strike'' granted him Dodge over several seconds before retaliating based on whatever damage he absorbed -- for everyone else, it was only granted in single-digit amounts from various [[SupportPower Runes and Summoner Masteries]] as well as from the item "Ninja Tabi" (a set of boots that granted a 12% Dodge chance). There also existed the "Sword of the Divine" item [[TacticalRockPaperScissors designed to counter the stat]], having an active buff [[AlwaysAccurateAttack to completely bypass Dodge and deal full damage all the way]]. Dodge was eventually removed from the game in 2012 as it wasn't fun on either end of the exchange (frustrating attackers to lose damage at random, unsatisfying and unreliable for targets), with Jax's ability, Ninja Tabi, and Sword of the Divine all being majorly reworked (the latter item removed altogether by late 2014).

** If a Control Ward is placed and survives without being taken down by the enemy for over two minutes and thirty seconds, it will gain a buff renaming it the "Distinguished Order of Ward Longevity and Health":
--->''"Perhaps this ward has been protected. Perhaps it has merely sat in a disused lane. Whatever the case, it has persisted for aeons in ward years and joins an ancient regal order of Wards that have lasted a really really ''really'' long time."''
** There's a random chance that a duck will spawn in the river of Summoner's Rift (it's a cosmetic effect that can be obscured by the "Hide Eye Candy" option in the settings menu). If five champions with [[BeachEpisode Pool Party skins]] are present in the game, the normal duck will be replaced by a rubber duck.
** There's a handful of "missions" that trigger whenever certain pairings/matchups of champions occur in the game, either providing a very minor or solely cosmetic buff for lore-based flair:
*** If Rengar and Kha'Zix are on opposing teams, with Rengar having claimed five ''Bonetooth Necklace'' trophies and Kha'Zix having evolved three of his abilities, the mission "The Hunt is On!" activates, rewarding the first champion to take down their opponent. If Rengar wins, he gains a sixth trophy. If Kha'Zix wins, he gets a fourth evolution, allowing him to upgrade all of his abilities in one game.
*** If Senna and Thresh are on opposing teams, with Senna having collected 100 Mist and Thresh 40 souls, the "Sentinels of Light" mission activates, rewarding the first champion to take down the other (optionally, [[BattleCouple a Lucian on Senna's side can contribute to the contest]]). If Senna wins, she gains some of Thresh's power in the form of 30 ability power and 30 armor. If Thresh wins, he gains some of their power (either Senna or Lucian) in the form of 30 attack damage, 40 attack range, and 20% crit chance.
*** In ''Wild Rift'', if [[CainAndAbel Nasus and Renekton]] are alive, at high levels, and near each other, there's a random chance that there will activate the mission "Bad Blood", where the first to take down the other receives a buff. If Nasus wins, ''Siphoning Strike'' gains area-of-effect damage. If Renekton wins, ''Dominus'' allows him to maintain maximum Fury for the ability's duration.
*** Also in ''Wild Rift'', if [[CainAndAbel Ornn and Volibear]] are alive, at high levels, and near each other, there's a random chance that there will activate another duel mission. If Ornn wins, ''Searing Charge'' becomes buffed when used on terrain to additionally slow opponents and shield Ornn. If Volibear wins, ''Stormbringer'' now knocks up enemies when he lands.
*** "Battle For The Freljord" was a mission up until patch 9.20 (the release of Ashe's voiceover update) where if Ashe, Sejuani, and/or Lissandra are on opposing teams, with each having accumulated 20 takedowns, the quest will trigger for the first to take down their opponent. Whichever champion comes out victious receives the "Queen of the Freljord" buff, giving them an ice crown that floats over their head for the remainder of the game.
*** If [[BattleCouple Caitlyn and Vi are on the same team]], they gain a buff titled "On the Case: Piltover's Finest" and gain a staggering bonus 1 gold upon shared takedowns. If a Jinx is opposing a Caitlyn or Vi, they all receive a mission called "Catch Me If You Can!", marking a counter for how many takedowns each champion has on the other, each takedown also granting just 1 bonus gold.
*** If Ekko and Zeri are on the same team, they gain a buff called "Zaunite Ingenuity" and gain a bonus 1 gold per shared takedown.
** During gameplay, one can look up items using the shop's search bar, with there being a handful of search terms bringing up items for various in-jokey reasons.
*** "pink ward" brings up a Control Ward, referencing the now-removed Vision Ward item it supplanted, which was pink. Typing "pink" also brings up the Duskblade of Draktharr, which used to have a passive effect that allowed it to disable nearby wards and reveals wards and traps, similar to pink wards ([[TheArtifact said effect was since moved to the Umbral Glaive item]]).
*** "noxian" brings up the Dark Seal, referencing its design aesthetic and lore.
*** "last shadow" and "ls" bring up Liandry's Anguish and Morellonomicon, referencing former LCK caster/analyst Nick "LS" De Cesare, who had [[SeriousBusiness an infamously passionate crusade against AP players who bought Morellonomicon, instead promoting Liandry's Anguish]] (more specifically its predecessor, Liandry's Torment).
*** "[[WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfJimmyNeutronBoyGenius jimmy neutron]]" brings up Sheen, referencing how one of the main characters in the movie and TV series is also named Sheen.
*** "tons of damage" brings up Trinty Force, based on [[AuthorCatchphrase a catchphrase used by David "Phreak" Turley to describe the item]] during his Champion Spotlight series.
*** "[[Film/HaroldAndKumar haroldandkumar]]" brings up Zeke's Convergence, tying in the [[BuddyPicture buddy duo]] to the item's design as requiring two players to buddy up to receive its power.
*** In ARAM, typing "Golden Bicep of Kobe" and "Golden Arm of Kobe" brings up the Guardian's Horn item, referencing LCS caster Sam "Kobe" Hartman-Kenzler, who -- while unfamiliar with the item -- [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsbydzwLaxA&t=1997s mistook it for a "golden bicep" during a showmatch]].

*** Kled is the only champion released thus far that has dual health bars: one for himself and one for his not-so-trusty mount, Skaarl. When Skaarl health goes down to 0, he will be dismounted, giving him a new Q ability, locking him from his dash and ultimate. He will also deal less damage, but also gains more attack range and movement speed while moving towards enemy champions. Each minion kill, champion damaged or killed by him, tower or epic monster damaged will refill his Courage bar, which will bring back Skaarl with a fraction of her total health back if filled. Also all health bonuses, besides level-up ones, go directly to Skaarl.

* '''Ultimate Spellbook''': The most recently developed (and currently unreleased) rotating mode, themed after the Ruination event. Everyone gets a special summoner spell that allows you to cast one of three randomly-selected ultimates from another Champion. Additionally, everyone's ultimates now scale with both ability power and attack damage, meaning that the ult you pick won't conflict with your item build.
* '''Legend of the Poro King:''' A winter-exclusive 5v5 skirmish on the Howling Abyss where the usual Summoner spells are replaced by two poro-specific abilities: firstly, the ability to throw a companion poro at enemies (and to dash to an enemy afterward) and secondly, to dash to the side of the Poro King, whom you will summon once your team has landed 10 poro hits on enemy players. The Poro King is a giant poro who proceeds slowly down the map, healing your team and doing damage to your enemies (tanking turret blasts and thrown enemy poros too) until he is dispelled. Possibly retired.

* ArtworkAndGameGraphicsSegregation: This is a game whose art direction and graphical quality have evolved non-stop through more than a decade, with a cast of over 150 unique playable champions to sell the series. This unfortunately results in the game's assets and promotional material showcasing a huge dissonance in quality and tone, especially the older a character is. Take Malphite for example, a giant rock elemental who in lore is sleek, sharp, and built like a mountain. His game model meanwhile, which was created in 2009, is a bumpy, low-fidelity Warcraft-type creature with much goofier proportions and features.

** Every champion has a unique skillset and playstyle, with many of them having access to something that no other champion can replicate (for instance, Singed's Poison Gas). Some champions stand out, though, for having their skills arranged in a different way than the usual "3 active abilities on Q, W, and E, one ultimate ability on R, one passive" formula. Some have a second passive that you need to slowly rank up as you would a regular skill, and other shapeshifting champions have upwards of 6 or 7 abilities that change depending on what form the character is currently in.
** There are also more champions being released now who are designed to be unusually functional to the {{Metagame}}. Riot is well aware of the fact that the standard "bruiser/tank top, bruiser/tank jungler, mage/assassin mid, ADC and support duo bot" meta is the most common way the game is played, so in order to make [[CastOfSnowflakes every character look, feel and play uniquely,]] they have to get tricky with champion capabilities. For some examples, Bard is a bot-lane support who heavily encourages global roaming, Kindred is a jungling ADC (other champions such as Graves and Quinn have also seen this role ever since, [[NotTheIntendedUse but they weren't intended to be]]), and Ivern is a pure support who exists as a roaming jungler due to a passive that makes it so he doesn't have to fight to gain a jungler's benefits.
** The unquestioned definitive example of this in the game is Aphelios, a champion so bizarre that he's like an escapee from ''an entirely different game.'' He doesn't even have 4 skills, instead having one skill, one ultimate, and a toggle between his two equippable guns which all change what his skill does and run on an ammo system that causes them to cycle to his next gun whenever one runs empty. Oh, and he doesn't rank up his skill when he gains levels either, instead gaining his choice of more AD, AS or armour penetration.

*** Rumble's skills generate Heat. At above 50%, Rumble's skills deal extra damage, but when the Heat gauge reaches 100%, it disables his skills until all the Heat dissipates but gives his attacks extra damage during the process.
*** Rengar gains Ferocity every time he uses a skill. When it's at 4 stacks, he can cast an enhanced version of his skill with no cooldown.
*** Gnar gains Rage over time or when he deals or takes damage. When he reaches maximum Rage, he can transform into Mega Gnar, a hulking, close-range champion with a new set of skills.
*** Yasuo gains Flow whenever he moves across the battlefield. When his Flow is full, he gains a shield the next time he takes damage.
*** Sett has Grit, a rapidly-depleting resource converted directly from the damage he receives, [[AttackReflector which he can then unleash back onto his enemies with]] [[MegatonPunch a massive Haymaker punch.]]

** Graves, Jhin and Aphelios' auto-attacks rely on an ammo system rather than being typically [[BottomlessMagazines unlimited]] as
is Aphelios, MOBA tradition, and both of them behave in different ways as a tradeoff.
*** Graves' [[ShortRangeShotgun shotgun]], rather than firing a single projectile, instead fires a conic blast of bullets, making him much deadlier in close-range, though he has to reload after two shots.
*** Jhin's attack speed is completely fixed, with any attack speed built just turning into bonus damage. He has to reload after four shots, but every fourth shot is a guaranteed critical hit (crits also give him a burst of movement speed), which eventually stacks up into [[CriticalHitClass making him heavy on instant burst damage]] rather than [[DeathOfAThousandCuts damage-per-second]] as with most marksmen.
