* SleeperHit: The game was kept under wraps all the way up until its release day, with no one even knowing of its existence until then. Just one day out from release, it shot up to #5 on Steam and has attracted near-universal praise from players.
** According to the developers, [[https://www.ign.com/articles/hi-fi-rush-went-viral-internally-at-bethesda-leading-to-shadow-drop this was 100% intentional]]. The game had gained so much buzz internally at Creator/{{Bethesda}} through good word of mouth that that they decided to shadow-drop it and let the same thing happen with players (with the idea that Game Pass would encourage people to try it with little risk). It worked.

Considering the recent shutdown of Tango Gameworks due to presumably underperformance of this game, this trope does not seem to fit (Halo 1 is a better example of a Killer App in its time).

* KillerApp: After a long drought of new games throughout 2022, ''Hi-Fi Rush'' became a SleeperHit for Microsoft as a desirable exclusive for not only Xbox Game Pass, but is also a console exclusive to the Platform/XboxSeriesXAndS - finally giving the platform a game that isn't on also on the Platform/XboxOne, thus averting a major complaint about the MediaNotes/TheNinthGenerationOfConsoleVideoGames in general. The fact that it's also a Japanese-developed exclusive also did much to endear it to players, as Japanese developers in the years prior had gravitated towards the Platform/NintendoSwitch, the Platform/PlayStation4 and later [[Platform/PlayStation5 5]]. In Early 2024, the game was ported to the [=PS5=].

In contrast, ''Hi-Fi RUSH'' is likely to remain exclusive on Xbox platforms by virtue of Microsoft owning it, though rumors that it might come to other consoles have sprung up.
