It's not until after "The Body Electric," when the New World army manages to escape and hand Thomas a guitar, that Thomas finally breaks out of it. It shows that Samuel is an AbusiveParent, and that Barchy can sometimes be intimidated by him.
** There's also a slight one for Amanda as well, who, during said argument, just stands there and does nothing. While it may just seem like she is a neglectful parent, it actually shows her ExtremeDoormat tendencies, and later on it's revealed that [[spoiler: she feels intimidated by her husband and wants Thomas to be happy, but feels like she can't show it.]]
