* In a rather unique case for the series, Master Roshi's Japanese voice had to be recast after his original seiyuu, Kōhei Miyauchi, passed away part-way through ''Dragon Ball Z''[='s=] run.[[note]]His final acting performance was in episode 260, but because the series was produced out-of-order, his final performance to be aired was episode 287.[[/note]] Roshi was voiced by Hiroshi Masuoka for the rest of ''Z'' and has been voiced by Masaharu Satou in all media from 2008 onward.

* The dub of ''The Path to Power'' had Major Metallitron voiced by Chris Sabat instead of his series actor Chris Rager due to the characters being totally different entities. Funny enough, Sabat had already voiced the main universe's Metallitron in a flashback in ''Z'' during the Androids Saga two years before Funimation got to dubbing the original series. Commander Red was also heard in the above-mentioned flashback by Lane Pianta whereas Creator/JoshMartin would become his voice in the series proper. The same happened with Staff Officer Black who was voiced previously by Phillip Wilburn before Chris Sabat took over.

She was replaced by Creator/NaokoWatanabe for the rest of the franchise. Kame Sennin's voice has changed several times after Kohei Miyauchi's death in the middle of the Buu Arc. Other casting changes in ''Anime/DragonBallZKai'' include Gregory's voice (Creator/YujiMitsuya), Dende's voice (to Creator/AyaHirano in ''Kai''), Nappa, Zarbon, Dodoria, and the entire Ginyu Tokusentai. In addition, Gyū-Maō, Enma-daiō, King Cold, and Porunga were recast following Creator/DaisukeGori's death, and Kami was recast following Creator/TakeshiAono's hospitalization (he passed away about a year later).
** Junpei Takiguchi originally voiced [[CrossdressingVoices Uranai Baba,]] the Grand Elder, and Porunga, but left the show for unexplained reasons (although he did reprise the Elder in ''Kai'' before he passed away). In a bittersweet aversion, although Nagai passed away a few months before the Kai cut of the Buu Saga began airing, he did record his final appearance before his death, and his final appearance aired posthumously.
** In Japan the Kai cuts of both the Cell Arc and the Buu Arc did not have as many recasts as both as the Saiyan and Freiza sagas, they still did change some parts if the original voice actor had passed away or unavailable for that role. Creator/UnshoIshizuka took over the role of Mr. Satan, again replacing the late Creator/DaisukeGori, and Mr. Satan's squad supporting him all had different voices as well (with the exception of Pirozhki, who was still voiced by Creator/HisaoEgawa). Videl changed from Creator/YukoMinaguchi to Creator/ShinoKakinuma [[note]] Although since Minaguchi did reprise her role as Videl in the ''Battle of Gods'' film which also utilized the ''Kai''-era cast, this is definitely due to being unavailable as she was studying in the U.S. at the time. [[/note]], while Creator/BinShimada took over as Bobbidi from Creator/JojiYanami, although Yanami still provided the narration and the voice of Kaio-sama.

The latter occurred mid-episode as well, but was simply handled by Lanipator coughing, and then Creator/LittleKuriboh taking over. Lanipator isn't gone, though; he still plays Krillin, Vegeta, and Piccolo.

* Starting with ''VideoGame/DragonBallFighterZ'', the English voice of Broly went from Creator/VicMignogna to Creator/JohnnyYongBosch after Vic was fired following sexual misconduct allegations. While Vic's voice was still used for ''Z'' Broly in ''[=FighterZ=]'', in ''VideoGame/DragonBallLegends'', Bosch redubbed ''Z'' Broly.

** As both Paolo Torrisi and Gianfranco Gamba, Goku and Frieza's original voice actors, are dead, they were replaced respectively by Creator/ClaudioMoneta and Federico Zanandrea.

* Before the original TV series was dubbed, Creator/{{FUNimation}} was indecisive on whether Delgadillo or Nadolny was Kid Goku's regular voice, as it used both actresses for flashbacks featured in ''Dragon Ball Z''. Easily the most jarring case would be an early Buu Saga episode ("Gohan's First Date") where one flashback clearly has Goku switch from Delgadillo to Nadolny ''mid-scene''.

** Joji Yanami returned to voice the narrator and Kaio for ''Dragon Ball Super'', only to fall ill and was replaced with Naoki Tatsuta in both roles beginning with episodes 12 and 14 respectively. The change was supposed to be temporary but became permanent after all.

* The American dub of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' returned from being UnCanceled at episode 68 with having an entirely new cast. This is due to Creator/{{FUNimation}} breaking off their partnership with Saban during the hiatus, leaving them unable to afford the original [[Creator/TheOceanGroup Ocean Studios]] voice actors in Vancouver. Creator/{{FUNimation}} wound up dubbing the rest of the ''Franchise/DragonBall'' franchise themselves, including the previously-dubbed episodes, which were heavily edited the first time around, and the first three movies.

* Also, when [=FUNimation=] attempted to dub the original ''Dragon Ball'' with Ocean in 1995, they recorded the first movie (''[[Anime/DragonBallCurseOfTheBloodRubies Curse of the Blood Rubies]]'') with Maggie Blue O'Hara as Bulma. When they moved onto the TV series, she was replaced with Lalainia Lindbjerg for unknown reasons. Lalainia's voice was also used for scenes from the TV series spliced into the movie, meaning Bulma has two voices in that dub. In addition, Master Roshi was voiced in his series debut and in the movie by Creator/MichaelDonovan but was replaced for the Fire Mountain portion of the story by Creator/IanJamesCorlett. The TV dub was canceled after 13 episodes, and the entire cast reprised their roles for ''Dragon Ball Z'', including Lalainia as Bulma, and Ian continuing to voice Master Roshi.

* Also, the original three ''Dragon Ball'' movies had inconsistent voices for various reasons. The first wasn't dubbed by Creator/{{FUNimation}} until 2010, and other than Yamcha, Roshi, the turtle, and Shenron, the voices were all different from the TV series because the casting changes for ''Dragon Ball Z Kai'' were being reflected (see below). The second ''Dragon Ball'' movie had some different voices (Kid Goku, Bulma, Launch) because it had been dubbed by Creator/{{FUNimation}} first in 1998 as a sort of "test" to see how a new cast would work. Fans discovering this film now tend to have a sour reaction to some of the voices. In addition, Ceyli Delgadillo (that film's voice for Kid Goku) was used again for the third ''Dragon Ball'' movie, but poor fan reception to her performance resulted in the character being recast to Stephanie Nadolny (Gohan's then-voice) for the main series. In addition, the Pilaf gang's voices were only placeholders, and the characters got different ones for the main series. ''[[Anime/DragonBallThePathToPower The Path to Power]]'' is the only ''Dragon Ball'' movie with a dub consistent with the TV series. Watching the films in the DVD boxset is an interesting experience because of all the voice swapping. Goku and Bulma are voiced by a different combo in all four films.

In addition, Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT had different narrators (in those cases, this trope was implemented on purpose to give each show a different feel).
