*** Somewhat similarly, Huron, a very small city in California's San Joaquin Valley, is also featured despite many players believing that a much larger and more noteworthy Central Valley city like Hanford or Visalia could've taken its place. This is usually chalked up to the developers not being very experienced with American geography that early in the game's development, and Huron has stuck around even when California was remade several years later, as the city does at least still represent the Central Valley's agricultural industry quite well.

** Kings in the base game, ''The Conquerors'', and ''The Forgotten'' share the same set of lines as their respective civilization's monks. ''The African Empires'' gave unique lines for the kings of its new civilizations, but so far the only civs before that point to get the same are the Slavs, Indians and Incas, since their lines were initially taken from ''VideoGame/AgeOfEmpiresIII''.

** Three characters from the first game would probably not be included in the roster if ''Super Smash Bros.'' were a more recently released franchise. Jigglypuff was a popular Franchise/{{Pokemon}} back when the series was new, and was a major recurring character in the anime, but has since largely fallen out of prominence within the ''Pokémon'' fandom. [[VideoGame/FZero Captain Falcon's series]] didn't get any games between 2004 and 2023, having largely been overtaken by ''Mario Kart'' as Nintendo's premier racing franchise, and all but his first two games have gone out of print. Ness has it even worse: ''Mother'' hasn't seen a release since the Japan-only ''VideoGame/Mother3'' in 2006, and the last game before that released [[VideoGame/EarthBound1994 in 1994]]. GrandfatherClause is about the only thing keeping them in the series at this point, with all three having been around since the start as the original secret characters (plus Luigi, who has, if anything, ''flourished'' in the years since then).

* ''VideoGame/StardewValley'':
** Emily and Shane were originally not marriage candidates - as a result their heart events prior to "Dating" are very much platonic (at best). While Shane has a defined story arc, Emily's heart events are largely "Emily does something weird and the player watches/reacts". The player isn't even ''in'' Emily's earlier heart events!
** After Emily was added as a marriage candidate in version 1.1, the subplot involving Clint's crush on her remains unchanged, even if you marry her. Although her 10-heart event seems to suggest that he's accepted your relationship and given up on her, his heart events still show him pursuing her (Even ''if you married her'' originally!). As of version 1.4, Clint's 6-heart event where he asks Emily on a date no longer plays if you've seen Emily's 8-heart event or married her.
** Many of the overworld sprites for the villagers are based on earlier appearances of the characters. Harvey is missing his moustache, Maru doesn't have glasses, Abigail wears a ribbon not seen in her portrait, Elliott's hair is significantly shorter, and Sebastian wears a t-shirt instead of a hoodie. While Haley's sprite matches her portraits, the photos in her 8-heart event use an earlier sprite where her dress was green instead of blue. Outside of the winter outfits added to version 1.6, these sprites have remained mostly unchanged.
