[[JustForFun/TheOneWith The one where...]] The first episode of the anime to be [[BannedEpisode banned over seas]].

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: The episode stems from a period when Game Freak didn't have as strict regulations on the anime, hence all the fanservice and the DirtyOldMan jokes.

* FanDisservice: James's bikini and fake inflatable boobs spoils any {{Fanservice}} potential in the beauty contest, turning it a cringe comedy. It was too much for 4Kids to show that scene even when they finally broadcast it in the US.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Misty's only reason for entering in the Bikini Contest is to get the prize money to repay the damages. Of course this is only in the dub as in the original, [[ShamelessFanserviceGirl Misty actually adores the spotlight]] (Hence why she looks happy despite supposedly being embarrassed of this, and why she went OcularGushers when James mocks her with his inflatable fake breasts).

** Gary Oak returns after being physically absent since the first episode and is just as egotistical and a {{Jerkass}} to Ash. This also marks the first time that Misty and Brock meet Ash's rival.
