* EmpireWithADarkSecret: For all the glory and optimism of the early Imperium catapulting the human species into a new golden age, especially on the heels of the truly dire era of Old Night, we get a few glimpses of the more shadowy occurrences happening behind the curtain.
** To put it bluntly, the Emperor is a warmonger. It's established early that Imperial doctrine is to take painstaking, good faith attempts at diplomacy to reach [[TechnicalEuphemism compliance]]; and if diplomacy fails, military conquest is the only second step. The Imperium will not permit a human society that exists outside of its authority.
** For all the pretenses of an open and honest society, we get a few early hints that the Imperium is riven with secrets and lies. Secret societies appear to be relatively common, even if they are fairly benign (or that they only claim to be, like the Warrior Lodges, or only start out that way, like the Imperial Cult).
** The Imperial Truth is (appropriately enough) a lie. One of the founding tenants of the Imperium, envisioned as a society of enlightened secularism, leaves its forces confused, scared, and poorly equipped to deal with Chaos when it starts to make its early appearances. The Interex was suspicious of the Luna Wolves, though their officers were pleasantly surprised to find out that their worst fears were not only unfounded, but the Luna Wolves were strangely innocent of any knowledge of an enemy that was an open secret within their society. (This pleasant surprise lasted a few minutes, however, due to Erebus's meddling having perfect timing.)

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Erebus is initially shown as someone who gains immediate respect of the Mournival and becomes close advisor to the Warmaster. But towards the end it is shown that he was the one who stole the Anathema from the Interex and kicked off the war between them and the Imperium.

* TheCameo: Dorn was present for and observing the conquest of Sixty-Three-Nineteen as a guest of the Luna Wolves, though he didn't participate. He gives Loken a few words of encouragement before he heads off to Terra for [[{{Foreshadowing}} other duties]]. Sanguinius later showed up to co-command the conquest and cleansing of Murder. These were particularly poignant because they were Horus's closest brothers, and, beside the Emperor, would go on to become his chief antagonists during the Heresy. Though in Dorn's case, their relationship would be more of an InformedAttribute.
* CurbStompCushion: While the Space Marines' victory over the "Emperor" is swift and brutal, they do take losses when storming his palace. Thus showing straight off the bat that as powerful as Astartes are, they are not invincible.

** The scenes with Samus reminds us that, however awesome the series is, it is still a CosmicHorrorStory.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: A Luna Wolf, Sedirae says earlier in the story, 'The only thing that can beat an Astartes is another Astartes’, and they had all laughed at that. The impossible was nothing to be scared of.'

* OutsideContextProblem: Samus ends up being this for Loken and the Luna Wolves in the Whisperwind Mountains. His presence ends up setting the stage for much worse things to come...

He personally comes down to reassure Loken after the debacle in the Whisperheads and frequently uses the Mournival as his attack dogs so that he can rein them in and look like a conciliatory figure. He also decides to talk to the interex instead of just exterminating them wholesale, hoping that the Imperium can learn from them.
