* UngratefulBitch: Matthew's wife. She is a complete Jerk and basically yells at Joshua that he should give himself to Fringe Division. While she has a point at being mad at Joshua and worried for Matthew, Joshua spent four years trying to find a way to bring his brother back and fix his mistakes, and is genuinelly working at keeping his brother safe, yet but that's still not enough. She's basically telling himself to get himself arrested or killed.

As the episode ends, Olivia's hallucination of Peter points out to her that there is a way to tell if she is from the prime universe: by confirming her memories of her niece Ella, who did not survive birth in the althernate universe. During Olivia's final test in the tank, she is again able to cross over to the gift shop in the prime universe. She is able to recall Ella's phone number and calls her to wish her a happy birthday, but is brought back to the alternate universe shortly after Ella answers. As she is removed from the tank, she lies, telling Walternate the test did not work.

In the alternate universe, a team of thieves carve someone out of a block of amber that's been used to quarantine a bank. The man being rescued -- the twin brother of one of the thieves -- is successfully revived, but when the amber begins to reform, one of the thieves is caught and trapped. Fringe Division investigates and realises that the man who was rescued is Joshua Rose, a bank robber whose phase-shifting technology caused breaches and ultimately led to him being accidentally caught in quarantine during one of his jobs. The team don't understand why someone would be taken out of amber, until Walternate (the inventor of amber) reveals to Broyles that people encased in amber aren't dead: they're in suspended animation, contrary to what the population believes. Walternate demands that Joshua be caught in order to protect this secret.

When Olivia and Lincoln interview Joshua's brother Matthew, who has a wife and children, Olivia begins to suspect what really happened: ''Matthew'' Rose was caught in the amber, Joshua has been pretending to be Matthew during the intervening years in order to provide for Matthew's family, and now he's finally saved Matthew. When Joshua realises that Fringe Division is figuring it out, he comes up with a plan to rob a new bank, believing he can solve everything. Matthew and Olivia both realise at the same time and follow Joshua to the bank: Joshua knocks Olivia out just before Matthew arrives. Matthew doesn't understand how robbing another bank will help, but Joshua explains that it's not about money: by using his phase-shifting technology, he's already triggered a quarantine protocol that will trap him in amber, satisfying Fringe Division (who now have Joshua "back" in amber) and giving Matthew a chance to live with his family. Lincoln and Scarlie pull Olivia out of the quarantine zone before the amber is released, trapping Joshua. Later, Olivia visits Matthew, having figured out about the switch, but she decides not to inform Fringe Division.

Meanwhile, Walternate wants to start using Olivia for experiments in travelling back and forth between the universes. During the first experiment, which involves going in a sensory depravation tank in the DOD labs, Olivia is able to briefly travel to the prime universe, arriving in a gift shop and returning extremely quickly. Walternate and Brandon are able to identify a nootropic -- cortexiphan -- operating in her brain during the trip. At the end of the episode, Peter appears to Olivia again, telling her things about the prime universe that "Fauxlivia" couldn't possibly know, such as the fact that it's Ella's birthday and that the twin towers were destroyed. Olivia volunteers to go back in the tank and travels to the prime universe: within the minutes that she's able to stay, she confirms that the twin towers have fallen and is able to call Ella and wish her a happy birthday. When Walternate and Brandon pull her out of the tank in the alternate universe, she claims that it didn't work.

Olivia is able to briefly travel to the prime universe, arriving in a gift shop and returning extremely quickly. Walternate and Brandon are able to identify a nootropic -- cortexiphan -- operating in her brain during the trip. Olivia volunteers to go back in the tank and travels to the prime universe: within the minutes that she's able to stay, she confirms that the twin towers have fallen and is able to call Ella and wish her a happy birthday. When Walternate and Brandon pull her out of the tank still trapped in the alternate universe, under Walternate's conditioning to believe she claims is this Olivia Dunham of the alternate univese. She willingly participates in Walternate's tests in a sensory-deprivation tank located on Liberty Island to stimulate her Cortexiphan abilities. One test is successful, as she temporarily finds herself in a gift shop on Liberty Island in the prime universe. Meanwhile, hallucinations of Peter continue to bother Olivia.

The Fringe team is alerted to an incident at a quarantine site, where the amber encasing the site has been cut into and a body has been removed. They identify the missing body as Joshua Rose, a bank robber. Joshua had previously caught Fringe Division's attention as he used a molecular destabilization device to break into banks, triggering quarantine-level events. Colonel Broyles is privately cautioned by Walternate that those trapped in amber are still alive, a fact he does not want to be made public. Broyles relays this to his team, ordering them to find Rose and bring him in as quickly as possible.

At Joshua's apartment, they discover he has a twin brother Matthew and equipment used for a negative matter ring. Their investigation is cut short as they are forced to evacuate from a rigged bomb which destroys the apartment. Lee and Francis were unable to hear the bomb, but Olivia could, possibly indicating that she retains the enhanced hearing demonstrated in [[FringeS02E02NightOfDesirableObjects "Night of Desirable Objects."]] They travel to Matthew's suburban home, meeting him, his wife, and their children. Joshua, having posed as Matthew since, was the one that freed him and spoke to Fringe. The brothers switch places again when Olivia requests a more detailed identity check from Matthew, which he passes successfully.

Believing Joshua will attempt another break-in but will avoid putting innocents in danger, Olivia has Fringe Division statistician Astrid identify three remotely located banks and decides to investigate them. Olivia finds the bank that Joshua has targeted and discovers his device in a subway tunnel, but he knocks her out before she can investigate further. As he energizes the molecular destabilizer, Fringe Division detects the event and converges on the bank. Matthew eventually finds Joshua, again trying to warn him off, but quickly realizes Joshua has purposely entered the bank to be trapped in the amber. Joshua believes this to be the only way to force the Fringe team to end their investigation. Matthew escapes the quarantine while Fringe agents Charlie and Lincoln rescue Olivia in time before the amber sets in. Olivia returns to Matthew the next day and confirms the case is closed, but not before collecting a skin sample that, should she ever need it, conclusively proves
that it didn't was Matthew in the amber before.

As she is removed from the tank, she lies, telling Walternate the test did not
work.
