When there are more than one or two Mad Scientist in a work, they will often specialize, becoming an EvilutionaryBiologist or perhaps a mad computer scientist. Of course, specializing in some mad -ology usually involves disagreeing with the current standard explanations in the field, or at least believing that there are some important experiments everyone is ignoring (probably because they are unethical). * [[HeroicComedicSociopath Professor Franken Stein]] of ''Manga/SoulEater'', whose love of dissection is played for laughs early on. [[spoiler:The "mad" aspect becomes important later on, as madness is [[CosmicHorrorStory somewhat more concrete]] in this world.]] [[MagnificentBastard Medusa]] definitely counts as well. Eibon could count as this as well, in both the anime and manga because not only does he eradicate the madness of knowledge but he teamed up with arachniphobia(an evil witch) to invent his magic tools and demon weapons although it seems as if he has truely benine intentions at heart.

** Dr. Etou from ''Shikkoku no Hana'' manga, on the other hand, is a [[SlasherSmile grinning]], stuttering and almost drooling specimen -- when his superior [[DopeSlap snaps him out of rants by punching]] this doesn't even look like needless cruelty.

* There is a double subversion in ''UniversalWarOne''. [[spoiler: The scientist who invented the wormhole is the only one to care about a possible TimeParadox, so he kills the fools who want to 'go home' even if it endanger the universe. However, when Kalish explains him there is no way to create a time paradox, the scientist becomes mad.]]

* German comic ''ComicStrip/NickKnatterton'' once had professor bartap, who invents a shaving foam which is also a very effective explosive. Unintentionally. (Comedic version, definitely.)

* Dr. Billy Joe Robidoux from ''ComicBook/WynonnaEarp''. To quote Wynonna "He's a southern-fried gumbo of Dr. Josef Mengele, Dr. Frankenstein and runs a real-life version of ''Literature/TheIslandOfDoctorMoreau''."
* The Military Doctor in ''{{Sturmtruppen}}'': He believes to have discovered the Invisibility Elixir without getting insane, while his attendants point out that's actually the other way around. He also thought that a case of anemia was actually caused by a Vampire.

* ''LightNovel/{{Baccano}}'' has Szilard Quates, Huey Laforet, and Renée Brinvillier. All three are immortal alchemists, and also happen to have [[MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter the requisite beautiful daughter]] (with Renée being the implied mother of Huey's).
* The ''Generation 1'' comic ComicBook/TransformersAllHailMegatron: makes Brainstorm into one. He seemingly has no qualms about [[spoiler: putting suggestion ideas inside Kup's mind]] at Prowl's request to exert more control over the army. ComicBook/TransformersLastStandOfTheWreckers Brainstorm works at the Kimia Facility, an R & D lab full of mad scientists. And Brainstorm in particular is considered especially insane even by ''their'' standards. He makes a hobby of creating weapons so horrible, their classified as unmentionable by the Ethics Committee. ComicBook/TransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye he builds all sorts of weapons [[spoiler: and a holding cell]] for the crew [[spoiler: and to hold Overlord]].
** Also from Wreckers is Ironfist, who's weapons have been responsible for the death of millions of cons, but he himself is quite naive and doesn't know of their effects as well as the war's toll outside of statistics. He builds a gun which targets the brain, and that was band by the ethics committee.
** Skyfall is a less comedic and naive example [[spoiler: he isn't as smart or successful as the others, but he's quite mad, and sold Ironfist's most deadly invention to the Decepticons, and rigged one of those brain bullets to lodge inside Ironfist's skull and kill him.]]

* Dr. Doofenschmirtz on ''WesternAnimation/PhineasAndFerb'' is an AffablyEvil PunchClockVillain trying to conquer the [[WhereTheHellIsSpringfield Tri-State Area]].

* Professor Maggie Walsh and Warren Mears on ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''.
** To be specific, Warren is an AxCrazy robotics expert.
*** Actually, no. Warren is good at Magitek in general as well, provided someone else provides the magic. Hence the Trio's Freezeray and Invisibility gun.
** Also, there were this pair of students from Buffy's high school that made their own version of Frankenstein. Yes, Maggie wasn't the only one to get the bright idea!
* Sherlock Holmes from the BBC's ''Series/{{Sherlock}}'' is constantly experimenting on something, including human body parts that he pilfered from the local morgue.
** Poor Watson even finds a human head in the refrigerator one day.
** And Detective Sally Donovan finds some human eyeballs in the microwave.
** And Mrs. Hudson finds a bag of thumbs in the fridge.

** Cid, one of the trademark characters of the ''FinalFantasy'' series, is sometimes portrayed in this light. Examples are in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'', where, despite working for TheEmpire, he is a sympathetic character, and in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXII'', where he is a main villain and fits this trope to a T (although in that game, he could also qualify as a WellIntentionedExtremist, seeing how the real bad guys were the pantheon he was fighting against).

Kozaky isn't a very useful card unless you're using a Human Wave Deck, and Magical Scientist is an illegal card (due to a notorious OneTurnKill strategy it can use with Catapult Turtle); however, both monsters are featured on the artwork on many Spell and Trap Cards, suggesting that they were involved in the creation of many things in the game that only a MadScientist could think up, such as the Koa'ki Meirus.

They're scientists, they're somewhat [[AbsentMindedProfessor scatterbrained]], [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate their practice is questionable]], and they are frequently [[EvilGenius working for the bad guys]], building [[GadgeteerGenius implausible gadgetry]], or [[NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup slightly ridiculous]] [[DoomsdayDevice superweapons]]. They tend to wear lab coats (classically, the Howie-style lab coat that buttons diagonally across the chest and has a Mandarin collar), have either [[EinsteinHair wild hair]] or [[BaldOfEvil total baldness]], and [[HerrDoktor speak with fake Central European accents]]. Sometimes they will engage in SesquipedalianLoquaciousness. [[TheyCalledMeMad People will often call them mad.]]

* ''FanFic/DungeonKeeperAmi: Invoked. Ami's favorite running gag is dressing up in a white lab coat, flipping a large power switch and laughing maniacly; all in good fun.
