[[caption-width-right:350: Pay no attention to the fighters behind the question marks. (Two of them don't have stages anyway.)]]

Some games can be fine with picking from the list of VideoGameSettings for their backgrounds. But for something a little more unique, each one could be tied to a certain character in the game's ensemble cast. It's especially convenient if the stage is named after the character.

In multiplayer, there's usually nothing stopping players from picking anyone for any arena. But if scripted, expect a fight or race with characters on "their" field.

Mostly a FightingGame or Sports Trope, but not exclusively. Also usually has nothing to do with HomeFieldAdvantage, since in these cases in doesn't matter who's on what stage.

Do not confuse with a BossBattle at the end of a video game level. (Unless that level is a stage itself that can be played on normally or if the boss is a playable character.) Exceptions could be listed if the game does something clever with it. Compare a Leitmotif, for the musical equivalent.

Even one character having one stage is enough to qualify for this trope.

*** Capcom has Dr. Wily's Military Base, Headquarters of Evil, Honda's Bathhouse, Live House of the Dark Realm, and Neo St. Petersburg.
** VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2 Averts this, as most of the backgrounds have nothing to tie them to either company. Though:
*** Swamp's unlockable alternate version is considered SonSon's home stage.
*** Airship is Ruby Heart's home stage.
** VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3
*** Marvel has Hand Hideout, S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Asgard, The Daily Bugle and, technically, Fate of the Earth.
*** Capcom has Metro City, Tricell Laboratory, Demon Village, and Kattelox Island.
* Franchise/MortalKombat calls them "arenas" but the idea is still the same:
** Goro is fought in Goro's Lair and Shang Tsung in his Throne Room in the first VideoGame/MortalKombat, but this is downplayed as they weren't playable characters at the time. Except Goro in the Gameboy version.
** VideoGame/MortalKombat3:
*** Hell/Scorpion's Lair for Scorpion
*** Jade's Desert
*** Kahn's Kave
*** Noob Saibot's Dorfen
** VideoGame/MortalKombat4:
*** Reptile's Lair
** VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse:
*** Apokolips for Darkseid
*** Bat Cave for Batman
*** Fortress of Solitude for Superman
*** Gotham City for Batman, The Joker and Catwoman
*** Oan Senate for Green Lantern
*** Metropolis for Superman and Lex Luthor
*** Raiden's Temple for Raiden
*** Shao Kahn's Throne Room for Shao Kahn
*** Special Forces Base for Sonya Blade and Jax
*** Themyscira for Wonder Woman
*** Wu Shi Academy for Kung Lau.
** VideoGame/MortalKombat11:
*** Black Dragon Fight Club for Kano.
*** Shirai Ryu Fire Garden for Scorpian
*** Used literally with The Lost Hive of The Kytinn for D?Vorah
*** Special Forces Desert Command and Tank Garage Bunker for everyone in the Special Forces.
*** Tarkatan War Kamp for Skarlet and Baraka.
* Being the FG generator this engine is, VideoGame/MUGEN can configure a specific stage with a character of your choice, being attached to one stage in Arcade Mode instead of having a random stage as default.
* VideoGame/MyLittlePonyFightingIsMagic had the Mane Six's home stages be their actual homes (or Cloudsdale in Rainbow Dash's case) from the original show.
* In Franchise/TheSimpsons Wrestling, Itchy and Scratchy can only be fought on their special stage, and only against each other.
* VideoGame/Skullgirls: Several characters have stages with strong narrative and thematic ties to them.
** Fillia: Maplecrest
** Cerebella: Medici Tower
** Peacock: Lab 8
** Ms. Fortune: Little Innsmouth
** Double: Grand Cathedral and Gehenna
** Big Band: Under the Bridge
** Eliza: Bath of Tefnut
** Beowulf: NMO Arena
** Annie: Sound Stage 15
** SNKBoss Marie: Final Atrium
* VideoGame/SonicTheFighters has the player fight the same characters in the same locations in the same order every time:
** South Island for Knuckles.
** Flying Carpet for Amy.
** Aurora Icefield for Bark.
** Mushroom Hill for Espio.
** Canyon Cruise for Tails.
** Casino Night for Fang.
** Dynamite Plant for Bean.
** Giant Wing for Sonic.
** Death Egg's Eye for Metal Sonic (not playable)
** Death Egg's Hangar for Dr. Robotnik (not playable)
* Franchise/StreetFighter is probably the TropeCodifier:
** Most stages from VideoGame/StreetFighterII have their own names, or were named later, and variations of them return in later games:
*** Air Force Base for Guile
*** Amazon River Basin for Blanka
*** Ayutthaya Ruins and King's Court for Sagat
*** Battle Harbor for Ken
*** Big Factory for Zangief
*** Fighting Barroom/ Flamenco Tavern for Vega
*** Fraserburgh Castle/ English Manor for Cammy
*** Kapukon Yu for E. Honda.
*** Las Vegas / High Roller Casino for Balrog
*** The Lemony for Deejay
*** Maharaja's Palace for Dhalsim
*** Shopping District, Taiping Road for Chun-Li
*** Suzaku Castle for Ryu
*** Temple Hideout for M. Bison
** Nearly everyone is tied to their own stage in VideoGame/StreetFighterAlpha and VideoGame/StreetFighterIII as well, though as most of them are listed as "X's Stage", listing them all would be pointless.
* Franchise/Tekken Tekken 2 and 3 have stages associated with each fighter's specific country. In Tekken 7 Akuma has the Abandoned Temple, with the DLC giving stages for Geese Howard, Noctis, Negan, Fahkumram, Kunimitsu II, and Lidia Sobieska.
* Most multiplayer stages in VideoGame/ThemsFightinHerds take place in the Champion's home regions:
** Alpake Highlands for Paprika.
** Baaah for Pom.
** Huoshan for Tianhuo.
** Reine City for Velvet.
** Sunset Prairie for Arizona.
** The Woodlands for Oleander.
** The Capricorn for Shanty.

* Videogame/Overwatch has some maps that are associated with certain playable characters. Such as Junkertown for former Junker's Junkrat and Roadhug, or Château Guillard which is the family home of Widowmaker.
* Though the mercs from VideoGame/TeamFortress2 avert this themselves (with probably the closest being Degroot Keep, with its connections to the Demoman's family name) but the game's Scream Fortress bosses count, as all of them would show up in other community made maps during the years to follow the original Halloween events. The Horseless Headless Horsemann was first fought at Mann Manor, MONOCULUS was the hazard for Eyeaduct, and Merasmus was fought at Ghost Town. If you really want to push it and count stage hazards as characters, the Ghost (Zepheniah Mann) was first seen on Event Harvest, and the skeletons/the Skeleton King was first used on Helltower.
* VideoGame/Unreal series:
** VideoGame/UnrealTournament and VideoGame/UnrealTournament2004 have the Hyperblast level, where Xan Kriegor, the ship's owner, is fought, and in both cases, Xan is unlocked as a playable character after beating the level in the games' single-playerIn 2004[='=]s case, there's the additional requirement of The Corrupt being the best placed of all the Godlike-tier teams at the end of the Team Ladders, though the other two Team Leaders -Malcolm and [=ClanLord=]- can also be unlocked following a similar method.
** Speaking of 2004, the Assault levels are reenactments of past events, and some of the teams that fought in those events have a 33% chance of being fought in these levelsFor reference, the 12 teams of the Tournament are divided in four tiers: Weak, Tough, Strong and Godlike, the game picks up a team of a defined tier at random, the Weak-tier teams are eliminated after the Team Qualification round, and while the player can choose any skin of their liking, unlike UT, they cannot canonically play in any of the teams:
*** AS-Convoy is a Strong-tier "N.E.G. vs. Hellions" match, and there's a chance the player can fight against the Strong-tier Hellions team.
*** AS-Glacier is a subversion: it's an "Axon vs. Izanagi" match, with the Izanagi side being represented by the Thunder Crash team, usually affiliated with the N.E.G. However, the match belongs to the Strong tier, a tier below Thunder Crash's Godlike tier, and while Axon has representation in the Tournament via the Weak-tier Goliath and Strong-tier Juggernauts teams, the player cannot play with any of these teams unless they have a full Juggernaut roster and the player chose a Juggernaut character, and even then it's impossible to recreate any of these teams.
*** AS-Mothership is a "Humans vs. Skaarj" match, belongs to the Godlike tier, and there's a chance the player can fight against the Godlike-tier Iron Skull Skaarj team.
*** [=AS-RobotFactory=] is another subversion: it's a "Liandri vs. The Corrupt" match, however it takes place in the Tough tier, two tiers below The Corrupt's Godlike tier, not to mention... the Liandri Corporation itself is backing the The Corrupt team.
** VideoGame/UnrealTournamentIII has a particular approach to their levels: each of them takes place in a particular area and belong to a particular faction which the player gets to fight (either against or as) in the Campaign:
*** Levels set on Tokaido[=DM-RisingSun=], [=DM-ShangriLa=], CTF-Reflection... belong to the Izanagi Corporation, which backs the Ronin team, the leader of which is TheProtagonist (and hence the PlayerCharacter, though the other three members can be played in Cooperative mode).
*** Levels set on Oxida NovaVCTF-Kargo, WAR-Torlan, WAR-Downtown, DM-Diesel... belong to the Axon Research Corporation, which backs the Iron Guard team.
*** Levels set on HyperionDM-Arsenal, [=DM-HeatRay=], [=DM-CarbonFire=] belong to the Liandri Corporation, which backs the game's version of The Corrupt, simply named "Liandri".
*** Levels set in the planet Omicron-6DM-Sanctuary, DM-Sentinel, WAR-Floodgate, CTF-Vertebrae... belong to the Phayder Corporation, which backs the Necris Black Legion team and, by extension, Mook the Krall team.

* VideoGame/CartoonNetworkPunchTimeExplosion has three stages for characters from WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory, WesternAnimation/TheGrimAdventuresOfBillyAndMandy, WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack, WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor, WesternAnimation/FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends, WesternAnimation/Chowder, and WesternAnimation/TheMarvelousMisadventuresOfFlapjack. WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls and WesternAnimation/Ben 10 series only has two. Averted for WesternAnimation/JohnnyBravo and WesternAnimation/CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers, who has none.
* VideoGame/NewgroundsRumble has one tied to every character except Fancy Pants.
** The Portal for P-bot
** Anywhere, USA for VideoGame/AlienHominid
** Piconjo Manor for Piconjo
** Japanese Garden for Samurai Asshole
** Pico's School for VideoGame/Pico
** Nene's Store for Nene
** The Meat Locker for WebAnimation/SaladFingers
** Wartorn for Tankman
** Nevada for Hank and the Henchman
** Junkyard for Alloy.
** Padded Room for Convict.
* VideoGame/PlayStationAllStarsBattleRoyale is interesting because, though there's still a stage for specific franchises, some series' takeover the stage, meaning a few can "share" a level. Kat, Dante, Emmett Graves, Isaac Clarke, Fat Princess, Heihachi and Toro avert this by not having their franchises represented in a stage at all.
** Kratos (and technically Zeus) has Hades, which gets invaded by VideoGame/Patapon.
** Franchise/RatchetAndClank have Metropolis, but gets invaded by God of War.
** Sackboy has Dreamscape, which gets invaded by Buzz!.
** VideoGame/JakAndDaxter have Sandover Village, which gets invaded by VideoGame/HotShotsGolf.
** Colonel Radec has Invasion, but gets invaded by Ape Escape.
** Cole and Evil Cole have Alden's Tower, but gets invaded by Sly Cooper.
** Nathan Drake has Stowaways, but gets invaded by Bioshock (Infinite)
** VideoGame/SlyCooper has Paris, but gets invaded by [=LittleBigPlanet=]
** [[VideoGame/ParappaTheRapper [=PaRappa=]]] has Dojo, but gets invaded by VideoGame/Killzone.
** San Francisco from VideoGame/Resistance is a subversion as that series has no playable character, until it gets invaded by Ratchet and Clank.
** Spike has Time Station, which gets invaded by Resistance along with several others.
** Raiden downplays this as Franchise/MetalGear has no main stage, but instead his home series invades Franzea.
** Big Daddy has Columbia but gets invaded by Twisted Metal.
** Sweet Tooth has Black Rock Stadium, but gets invaded by Jak And Daxter.
** In DLC, Nariko has Fearless, which gets invaded by VideoGame/Wipeout
** The second DLC batch gives Sir Daniel Fortesque The Graveyard, which gets invaded by VideoGame/TheUnfinishedSwan.
* VideoGame/SlapCity: A CrisisCrossover-type PlatformFighter for a few of Creator/Ludosity and Creator/DanielRemar's games, which has some stages being from the home universes of some of its characters, such as:
** Hurtland, The Saturnian Palace, and Healing Mode for the VideoGame/PrincessRemedy series.
** Mecha Santa's fortress, for VideoGame/HyperPrincessPitch.
** D.C.M.F.P.R. Facility for VideoGame/Iji.
* VideoGame/SuperSmashBros:
** The original game plays this the most straight, due to it's smaller cast. Everyone from the original starting roster Meaning Ness and Captain Falcon are Averted. has a stage related to their respective franchises.
*** Mario has Peach's Castle AND Mushroom Kingdom Though it's common to see this stage associated with Luigi.
*** Link has Hyrule Castle.
*** VideoGame/Kirby has Dreamland.
*** Samus has Planet Zebes.
*** Fox has Sector Z
*** Pikachu and Jigglypuff has Saffron City
*** Franchise/DonkeyKong has Congo Jungle
*** Yoshi has, well, Yoshi's sIsland
** VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee is the point where stages are tied less towards specific characters, and more for the franchises in general, with most of them having two each in this game. However it still wouldn't be uncommon for the "extra" characters be tied to the secondary stages:
*** Lylat Wars for Falco.
*** Termina Bay for Young Link.
*** PokéFloats for Jigglypuff.
*** Ness and Captain Falcon finally have home stages for themselves by having two each. Samus, Kirby, Yoshi and Donkey Kong also have two stages for themselves. And if you count the Past Stages, three for the three later.
*** Mario is usually associated with Rainbow Ride, while the rest of the Mario cast is seen on Princess Peach's Castle more often than not.
*** The Ice Climbers and Mr. Game & Watch play this straight as they only have Icicle Mountain and Flatzone associated with them, respectively.
*** Averted for Marth and Roy, as Franchise/FireEmblem had no stages associated with it at the time. The closest they have is Hyrule Temple, where the sole track for that series is played.
** VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl:
*** Marth (and now Ike) finally has stage associated with Fire Emblem with Castle Siege.
*** Pit has Sky World.
*** VideoGame/Wario has Wario Ware Inc.
*** Captain Olimar has Distant Planet.
*** Lucas specifically has New Pork City.
*** Toon Link specifically has Pirate Ship.
*** Since they come from the same game, Lucario is usually associated with Spear Pillar.
*** Brawl also starts the trend of third parties having their own single stage, with Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog having Green Hill Zone and Solid Snake having Shadow Moses Island, respectively.
*** The Bridge of Eldin represents the new main Zelda stage to go along with Link, Zelda and Ganondorf's new (at the time) Twilight Princess designs.
*** Even Luigi kind of has his own stage with VideoGame/LuigisMansion.
** VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosForNintendo3DSAndWiiU:
*** VideoGame/AnimalCrossing finally gets a playable character, with Villager having Tortimer Island (3DS) and the return of Town and City / Smashville (Wii U).
*** Wii Fit Trainers have Wii Fit Studio for both versions.
*** Franchise/Megaman has Wily Castle.
*** Little Mac has Boxing Ring.
*** Mario Galaxy counts as Rosalina's home stage (in the Wii U verson).
*** VideoGame/PacMan has Pac-Maze (3DS) and VideoGame/PacLand (Wii U)
*** Technically, Alph gets a home stage with Garden of Hope (Wii U)
*** Sonic gets a new stage in the Wii U version with Windy Hill Zone.
*** Being tied to the same game, Greninja has Prism Tower (3DS) and Kalos Pokémon League (Wii U).
*** Bowser Jr is usually fought on Delfino Plaza or Mario Circuit.
*** Shulk has Gaur Plains.
*** VideoGame/DuckHunt has, well, Duck Hunt.
*** If it counts, The UsefulNotes/Mii Fighters have Find Mii, VideoGame/TomodachiLife (both 3DS), Wuhu Island and Website/Miiverse (both Wii U).
*** Ryu And later Ken. has Suzaku Castle
*** Cloud has Midgar.
*** VideoGame/Bayonetta has Clock Tower.
** VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosUltimate:
*** Along with many returning, the Mario and Zelda series has two new home stages.
*** The Inklings have Moray Towers.
*** Simon and Richter has Dracula's Castle.
*** Joker starts the DLC batch by having Mementos.
*** The Heroes have Yggdrasil's Altar.
*** Banjo and Kazooie have Spiral Mountain.
*** Terry has King of Fighters Stadium.
*** Byleth has Garreg Mach Monastery.
*** Min Min has Spring Stadium. Funnily enough, Min Min has her own stage in her home game.
*** Steve/Alex/Zombie/Enderman have Minecraft World.
*** Sephiroth brings a new stage for the Final Fantasy series with Northern Cave.
*** Pyra and Mythra have Cloud Sea of Alrest.
* Due to flash file size limits, the first VideoGame/SuperSmashFlash had many characters, but only six stages based on Mario (which had two), Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Pokémon, and Sonic. The sequel has a more variety of stages, with at least one for every franchise represented.

* A wider version can be seen in VideoGame/ForzaHorizon series, where certain car types are related with specific zones on the map races, mostly city cars and sedans run inside cities, off-road vehicles run in trails, and supercars (as well some muscle cars) run on highways.
* There's guaranteed to always be at least one "Bowser's Castle" in every VideoGame/MarioKart game. But there's plenty of other racetracks themed or named after most of the main characters throughout the series.
* VideoGame/NicktoonsRacing has two tracks each (except for WesternAnimation/AaahhRealMonsters which only has one) for WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants, WesternAnimation/CatDog, WesternAnimation/TheAngryBeavers, WesternAnimation/HeyArnold, WesternAnimation/Rugrats, WesternAnimation/TheWildThornberrys and WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow. Each Nicktoon has a least one playable racer.
* VideoGame/SegaSuperstars:
** Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing: To save us a long list, there are three tracks based on VideoGame/BillyHatcherAndTheGiantEgg, VideoGame/SambaDeAmigo, VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall and VideoGame/HouseOfTheDead. (All having at least one controllable racer.) Sonic the Hedgehog has three courses based on three areas from VideoGame/SonicHeroes, for a total of nine.
** There's a more variety of SEGA tracks in Transformed, but again, not every playable character has a specific stage tied to their series.

* VideoGame/MarioSuperstarBaseball has character-specific fields for Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario and Bowser. Half of the game's main "captains."
** VideoGame/MarioSuperSluggers had new fields for the previous six but including ones for Luigi, Daisy and Bowser Jr as well.
* VideoGame/MarioTennis
** All of the original game's unlockable courts are themed after double teams (except Donkey Kong's.) With The Mario Bros, Wario & Waluigi, Baby Mario & Yoshi, and Yoshi & Birdo. The rest if the unlockable courts with a single character requires the Transfer Pak for when certain minigames are completed in the Gameboy Color version.)
** Mario Power Tennis has a Luigi's Mansion court, as well as ones themed for Wario Donkey Kong and Bowser.
** "Inferno Island" takes place around Bowser's Castle in Mario Tennis Aces
* Sega Superstars Tennis:
** The Sonic characters have Green Hill Zone and Scrap Brain Zone.
** Space Port 9 for Ulala and Pudding.
** Splash Garden for [=NiGHTs=] and Reala.
** VideoGame/SuperMonkeyBall for [=AiAi=] and [=MeeMee=]
** Shiubuya DownTown for Beat and Gum.
** Carnival Park for Amigo.
** Averted for VideoGame/AlexKidd and Gilius Thunderhead. There's also three other courts that don't have a playable character tied to it.

*Videogame/HyruleWarriors
** A few characters from the first game carry battlefields over from their debut games.
*** VideoGame/OcarinaOfTime brings that game's version of Death Mountain and Lake Hylia for Darunia and Princess Ruto, respectively.
*** VideoGame/TwilightPrincess uses the Temple of Twilight for Midna and Zant, while Twilight Field can count for Agitha's.
*** VideoGame/SkywardSword uses Skyloft and Sealed Grounds for Fi and Ghirahim.
*** Valley of Seers and Temple of Souls both count for Cia's.
*** Legends includes The Forsaken Fortress with The Wind and Earth Temples for Tetra, King Daphnes, Toon Link and Medli.
** The sequel, VideoGame/HyruleWarriorsAgeOfCalamity continues this. Though unlike the previous one, this game takes place in only one game of the franchise, so the character's home stage is more literal, both for promoted characters and ones who are unlocked later.
*** Link, Zelda, and to a lesser extent Impa has Hyrule Field and Hyrule Castle.
*** Zora's Domain for Mipha
*** Death Mountain for Daruk
*** Tabantha Frontier for Revali
*** Gerudo Town for Urbosa
*** The Yiga Clan Hideout can count for
*** is obtainable after Great Hyrule Forest.
* Videogame/MarioParty:
** The first game had boards that was named after and tied to the original characters.
*** DK's Jungle Adventure.
*** Peach's Birthday Cake.
*** Yoshi's Tropical Island.
*** Wario's Battle Canyon.
*** Luigi's Engine Room.
*** Mario's Rainbow Castle.
** Waluigi gets one is 3 with Waluigi's Island.
